Snapping biceps femoris syndrome is an uncommon cause of lateral knee pain and may be difficult to diagnose, resulting in unsuccessful surgical intervention. In this report, we present an unusual case of a 37-year-old male marathon runner with unilateral snapping knee secondary to dislocation of the long head of the biceps femoris over the fibular head during knee flexion. The pain was great enough to interfere with his ability to practice sport. Possible causes of symptomatic snapping knee include multiple intra-articular or extra-articular pathology. Biceps femoris snapping over the fibular

Ankle inversion injuries are the most common traumatic injuries in dancers. Ankle stability is integral to normal mobilization and to minimizing the risk for ankle sprain. The ability of the dynamic and static stabilizers of the ankle joint to maintain their structural integrity is a major component of the normal gait cycle. In the world of dance, this quality assumes even greater importance given the range of movement and stresses imposed on the ankle during various dance routines.

Injury to the perforating branch of the peroneal artery has not been reported previously as a cause of acute compartment syndrome following soft-tissue injury to the ankle. We describe the case of a 23-year-old male who sustained such an injury resulting in an acute compartment syndrome. In a review of the literature, we could find only five previous cases, all of which gave rise to a false aneurysm which was detected after the acute event.

We present a 16-year-old boy with mild hemophilia A who developed superficial fibromatosis mimicking subcutaneous hematoma of the right upper dorsal region of the foot. This condition is very rare. Hematoma originally developed after the patient sprained the right ankle. Although cast immobilization and replacement therapy with factor VIII (FVIII) concentrates reduced the symptoms, the swelling and pain reappeared in the same region 4 weeks after the cast was removed. A clinical diagnosis of intramuscular hemorrhage was made. Despite readministration of regular FVIII concentrates and cast immo

Strain of the medial head of the gastrocnemius muscle (GM) is a common injury that can be confirmed by ultrasound (US) or magnetic resonance imaging. We report a case of strain injury of the medial head of the GM, with a hematoma between the soleus muscle and the GM. US revealed an enlarged hypoechoic area between the soleus and the GM. By US-guided puncture, only a small amount of old blood was evacuated. Hence we undertook a surgical approach. It was performed under general endotracheal anesthesia, in the prone position. The most superficial area of hematoma was shown by US. A sharp 4-mm tro

A case of an intra-articular fibrous band of the ankle is presented with emphasis on the MR imaging appearances. This entity is an important but uncommon cause of post-traumatic ankle pain and is well recognized within the arthroscopy literature, but there is little if any documentation of this condition in the imaging literature.

A rare case is presented of acute anterior compartment syndrome in the thigh of a footballer caused by an acute quadriceps strain, exacerbated by poor first aid and alcohol ingestion. Decompressive fasciotomy with subsequent split skin grafting of the wound defect resulted in a satisfactory outcome. The diagnosis requires a high index of suspicion lest it be overlooked with inevitably disastrous consequences.

Blunt arterial injury is usually caused by high velocity trauma and can result in intimal dissection. We present a case of a professional footballer who sustained an intimal tear of the posterior tibial artery following a minor eversion injury of the ankle. The injury was noticed because of the physical demands of this patient's profession. This was confirmed by an arteriogram and was treated with bypass surgery using an arm vein. Arterial intimal injury has not been reported previously with this type of injury. A high index of suspicion is needed to diagnose these injuries and revascularisati

Repetitive motion disorders can involve lengthening of skeletal muscles to perform braking actions to decelerate limbs under load often resulting in muscle strains and injury. Injury is a loss of isometric force (weakness) requiring days to recover. The capacity of skeletal muscle to tolerate repeated strains is dependent on multiple factors including individual variation. The most important factors producing muscle strain injury are the magnitude of the resisting force (peak-stretch force) and the number of strains. Other factors such as muscle length and fiber type contribute to the suscepti

A case of an adult man with symptoms of chronic recurrent ankle sprains secondary to nonunion of a fracture of the tip of the lateral malleolus is presented. The nonunion was debrided, bone grafted, and internally fixed by using the tension band wire technique. The fracture healed and the patient experienced no further episodes of ankle sprain.

Young female players in European handball have a very high injury incidence, up to 50 injuries per 1000 hours of game. More than half of these injuries happen without any external cause. The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of an intervention programme designed to reduce the number of injuries in young female players in European handball, with special emphasis on injuries in the lower extremities. The programme was created using elite athlete training programmes and those designed for rehabilitation of injured athletes with functional instability of their ankles and rupture of th

This article presents an operative technique for modified arthroscopic excision of the symptomatic os trigonum and release of the flexor hallucis longus tendon sheath. The procedure uses two stacked posterolateral subtalar joint portals, rather than the customary anterolateral and posterolateral portal combination. By visualizing the os trigonum with an arthroscope positioned in a distal portal and introducing instrumentation through a proximal portal, the ossicle may be quickly exposed and excised with minimal dissection. A case study with a 22-month follow-up and a discussion of os trigonum
