Current status of stem cell treatments and innovative approaches for stress urinary incontinence.

Stem cells are capable of self-renewal, differentiation, and the promotion of the release of chemokines and progenitor cells essential for tissue regeneration. Stem cells have the potential to develop into specialized cells if given the right conditions, to self-renew and maintain themselves, to generate a large number of new differentiated cells if injured, and to either generate new tissues or repair existing ones. In the last decade, it has become clear that treating lower urinary tract dysfunction with the patient's own adult stem cells is an effective, root-cause method. Regenerative medi

The use of electrical stimulation to induce cardiac differentiation of stem cells for the treatment of myocardial infarction.

Ischemic heart disease resulting from a myocardial infarction (MI), is a major health issue. Stem cell therapies may play an important role in this field. However, cardiomyocytes induced from stem cells are characterized by low rates of differentiation and immaturity. After transplantation into the damaged heart, they may even increase the risk of arrhythmias. Studies have demonstrated that electrical stimulation (ES) can promote the cardiac differentiation of stem cells. This review summarizes the latest research on the effects of applying different electrical stimulation (ES) parameters to d

[Stem cells--cloning, plasticity, bioethic].

Stem cells with certain characteristics have become promising tools for molecular medicine. They have the potential to self-regenerate and to differentiate into specific tissues. Besides their great potential, embryonic stem cells (ESC) run the risk of enhanced tumorigenesis. The use of human embryonic stem cells (hESC) is ethically problematic because their isolation involves the destruction of human embryos. Recently developed methods generate are able to pluripotent stem cells from fibroblasts. Alternatives for ESC are adult stem cells (ASC) derived from bone marrow, cord blood, amniotic fl

[Cell sources for engineered temporomandibular joint disc tissue: present and future].

The purpose of this review is to provide a reference for researchers in investigating the tissue engineering of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disc. Currently tissue engineering of the TMJ disc is in its infancy, and cell source is one of the key factors that define the development of the tissue engineering of TMJ disc. In this paper, 6 kinds of cells: the TMJ disc native cells, chondrocytes, dermal fibroblasts, bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells, adipose-derived stem cells, and embryonic stem cells are introduced. In addition, the possibility that these cells can be used as cell so

Roles of Spermatogonial Stem Cells in Spermatogenesis and Fertility Restoration.

Spermatogonial stem cells (SSCs) are a group of adult stem cells in the testis that serve as the foundation of continuous spermatogenesis and male fertility. SSCs are capable of self-renewal to maintain the stability of the stem cell pool and differentiation to produce mature spermatozoa. Dysfunction of SSCs leads to male infertility. Therefore, dissection of the regulatory network of SSCs is of great significance in understanding the fundamental molecular mechanisms of spermatogonial stem cell function in spermatogenesis and the pathogenesis of male infertility. Furthermore, a better understa

Tissue Engineering and Stem Cell Therapy in Pediatric Urology.

The rapidly expanding field of tissue engineering along with stem cell therapy has a promising future in pediatric urological conditions. The initial struggle seemed difficult in renal regeneration but a functional biounit has been developed. Urine excretion has been demonstrated successfully from stem cell-generated embryonic kidneys. Three-dimensional (3D) stem cell-derived organoids are the new paradigm in research. Techniques to regenerate bladder tissue have reached the clinic, and the urethra is close behind. 3D bioprinted urethras would soon be available. Artificial germ cells produced

Novel developments in retinal regeneration: Advances and future outlooks in stem cell therapy.

Retinal degenerative diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration, retinitis pigmentosa, and Stargardt disease, are primary contributors to irreversible vision loss globally. Due to the scarcity of effective curative treatments, stem cell therapy has emerged as a revolutionary advancement in ophthalmology. In the last ten years, significant advancements have been achieved in the derivation of retinal pigment epithelium and photoreceptor precursors from human embryonic stem cells and induced pluripotent stem cells, with initial clinical trials indicating safety and potential efficacy. A review of decellularized stem cell matrix: a novel cell expansion system for cartilage tissue engineering.

Cell-based therapy is a promising biological approach for the treatment of cartilage defects. Due to the small size of autologous cartilage samples available for cell transplantation in patients, cells need to be expanded to yield a sufficient cell number for cartilage repair. However, chondrocytes and adult stem cells tend to become replicatively senescent once they are expanded on conventional plastic flasks. Many studies demonstrate that the loss of cell properties is concomitant with the decreased cell proliferation capacity. This is a significant challenge for cartilage tissue engineering

Stem cells: an overview of the current status of therapies for central and peripheral nervous system diseases.

In regenerative medicine, stem cells are currently considered ideal candidates for the treatment of diseases and injuries of the nervous system, for which, at present, there are no effective treatments. Promising results have been shown by clinical trials for neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's diseases, but also for demyelinising disorders and traumatic lesions of the brain and spinal cord. The proof-of-principle is that the replacement of damaged cells and the restoration of function can be accomplished by the transplantation of embryonic or adult stem cells. Advancements in stem

[Mesenchymal stem cells. A review.].

The bone marrow contains various types of stem cells. Among them are hematopoietic stem cells, which are the precursors of all blood cells, and mesenchymal stem cells. Mesenchymal stem cells have recently received a lot of attention in biological research because of their capability to self renewal, to expand and transdifferentiate into many different cell types; bone cells, adipocytes, chondrocytes, tendocytes, neural cells and stromal cells of the bone marrow. Mesenchymal stem cells can be cultured in vitro although their differentiation potential is not yet fully understood. Several experim

Regenerative medicine: a radical reappraisal of the spleen.

The spleen has long been considered a dispensable organ. Recent research, however, has found that the spleen of adult mice holds a reservoir of stem cells that can rapidly and robustly differentiate into functional cells of diverse lineages. Splenic stem cells express Hox11, a key embryonic transcription factor that regulates organogenesis. The presence of multi-lineage stem cells in the spleen might represent lifelong persistence of cells from a primitive embryonic region called the aorta-gonad-mesonephros. By bringing together findings from diverse disciplines, we propose that the adult sple

Dental Stem Cells in Bone Tissue Engineering: Current Overview and Challenges.

The treatment of bone that is impaired due to disease, trauma or tumor resection creates a challenge for both clinicians and researchers. Critical size bone defects are conventionally treated with autografts which are associated with risks such as donor site morbidity and limitations like donor shortage. Bone tissue engineering has become a promising area for the management of critical size bone defects by the employment of biocompatible materials and the discovery of novel stem cell sources. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) can be isolated with ease from various dental tissues including dental p

Islet transplantation versus stem cells for the cell therapy of type 1 diabetes mellitus.

Pancreatic islet cell transplantation has represented the mainstay of cell therapy for the potential, final cure of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D), along the past two decades. Unfortunately, the restricted availability of cadaveric human donor pancreases coupled with heavy side effects of the recipient's general immunosuppression, have severely crippled progress of this approach into clinical trials. Only a few excellence centers, worldwide, have thus far accrued still quite marginal clinical success. In an attempt to overcome the limits of islet transplantation new technologies for use of sev

Isolation and characterization of tumor stem-like cells from human meningiomas.

Recent advances in research have found that tumor stem-like cells are resistant to surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy. Tumor stem-like cells play critical roles in tumor recurrence, angiogenesis, and invasion in malignant brain tumors. However, the identification of tumor stem-like cells in meningiomas has not been clarified. In this study, we identified the stem-like features of sphere-forming cells in human meningiomas. The results showed that meningioma stem-like cells possess the ability to form spheres in identical stem cell culture condition. These meningioma sphere cells (MgSCs) ex
