Is chronic ulcerative stomatitis an entity? Clinical and immunological findings in 18 cases.

Chronic ulcerative stomatitis (CUS), a rare disease of oral mucosa found to be associated with unusual antinuclear antibodies reactive exclusively with squamous epithelia (squamous epithelium-specific antinuclear antibodies - SES-ANA), has been reported to occur almost exclusively in older females and to respond dramatically to antimalarials. We report on a large series of 18 cases positive for SES-ANA, 15 of them with active CUS, followed-up for several years. We found that the disease may occur, although rarely, in men and younger females. The antibodies persist after clearance of mucosal le…

Effectiveness of a medicament containing silicon dioxide, aloe, and allantoin on aphthous stomatitis.

This research protocol was designed to test the effectiveness of a gel containing silicon dioxide, aloe vera, and allantoin in the healing of recurrent aphthous ulcers. The subjects were patients with histories of developing multiple ulcers on the oral mucosa during a 3-to-4-month period. The parameters used to evaluate healing were number of lesions during a 3-to-4-month period, length of the interval between ulcers, size of ulcers, and pain from ulcers. An approach was used in which data were accumulated from diaries maintained by the subjects throughout the study intervals. Because 3 active

Selective infections of olfactory and respiratory epithelium by vesicular stomatitis and Sendai viruses.

Following intranasal instillation of vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) in mice there was an extensive infection of the olfactory epithelium in contrast to a minimal involvement of the respiratory epithelium. Sendai virus (SV), on the other hand, caused an extensive infection of the respiratory epithelium and only minimal infection of the olfactory mucous membrane. VSV budded from basolateral surfaces of supporting cells and olfactory neurons, but not from their apical surfaces or the ciliated bulbous endings of the olfactory neuron dendrites. This asymmetric release of VSV favoured neuroinvasio…

Replication of the vesicular stomatitis virus genome in permissive and nonpermissive host cells.

Permissive infections of BHK cells and nonpermissive infections of Raji cells were probed for the accumulation of vesicular stomatitis virus intracellular RNAs. In Raji cells, the onset of vesicular stomatitis virus transcription and replication was delayed when compared to BHK cells, and the accumulation of plus and minus sense leader RNAs was significantly reduced. In contrast, full length plus and minus strand replicative RNAs accumulated in Raji cells to levels approximately equivalent to those in BHK cells. In both cell types, approximately four times as many minus strands as plus strands…

The ACTL domain of stomatal lineage bHLHs confers in vivo partner specificity.

Basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcription factors (TFs) comprise one of the largest TF families in plants. bHLHs act as dimers, and partner choice can have a profound impact on DNA binding and target gene regulation. Partner specificity is largely determined by the composition of the bHLH domain, but there is growing evidence that additional domains such as the ACT-like (ACTL) domain may contribute to specificity. Using the stomatal lineage bHLHs SPCH, MUTE, FAMA, and their shared partner SCRM as a model, we show that deleting the ACTL domain compromises transcription factor function in vivo

Effects of glycyrrhizin on healing and prevention of recurrent aphthous stomatitis in hamster models.

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS), a major type of stomatitis, can significantly impair quality of life. The therapeutic and preventive effects of glycyrrhizin (GL), a compound known for its anti-inflammatory properties, remain unclear due to the lack of appropriate animal models, especially for prevention studies. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the therapeutic and preventive effects of GL and determine the optimal concentrations using two hamster models (stomatitis-initiation model and stomatitis-healing model) representing the initiation and healing phases of RAS. The effects were…

Lipid-mediated regulation of stomatal dynamics during plant stress responses.

Stomatal regulation is governed by interconnected developmental, hormonal, metabolic, and environmental signaling networks that enable plants to balance carbon acquisition with water conservation. This review highlights lipid metabolism and lipid-mediated signaling as an emerging regulatory layer integrating these processes during stomatal development and movement. We synthesize evidence that diverse lipid classes, including fatty acids, sterols, phosphoinositides, phosphatidic acid (PA), diacylglycerol (DAG), sphingolipids, and oxylipins, function not only as membrane components but also as d

Dovetailing the Genetic, Developmental and Functional Bases of the Adaptation of Stomatal Traits to Climate.

Stomata, the micro-valves on leaves, regulate CO2 uptake and water loss. Thus, the anatomical maximum stomatal conductance, gmax, is a key influence on gas exchange, growth and productivity. For 145 geographically diverse ecotypes of Arabidopsis thaliana grown in a common garden we tested hypotheses for the drivers of variation in gmax and a stomatal size-density trade-off, considering epidermal optimization, epidermal development and climate adaptation. Ecotypes native to colder and drier macroclimates had higher gmax, consistent with leaf-scale stress-avoidance, despite having longer times t

Viewing Stomata in Action: Autonomous in Planta Imaging of Individual Stomatal Movement.

Stomata regulate plant gas exchange under changing environments, but observations of single stomata dynamics in planta are sparse. We developed a compact microscope system that can measure the kinetics of tens of stomata in planta simultaneously, with sub-minute time resolution. Darkfield imaging with green light was used to create 3D stacks from which 2D surface projections were constructed to resolve stomatal apertures. Stomatal dynamics of Chrysanthemum morifolium (Chrysanthemum) and Zea mays (Maize) under changing light intensity were categorized, and a kinetic model was fitted to the data

TOT3-AHA1 module: its role in fine-tuning stomatal responses.

Stomatal pores, controlled by surrounding guard cells, play a crucial role in balancing carbon dioxide (CO2) uptake and water loss in plants. Recent studies in Arabidopsis thaliana have identified the TARGET OF TEMPERATURE 3 (TOT3)-plasma membrane (PM) H+-ATPase (AHA1) module as a key player in stomatal movement, though its exact role in vascular plants is not yet fully understood. TOT3, a transcriptional regulator, influences the activity of AHA1, which regulates ion fluxes essential for stomatal opening. Under high-temperature conditions, TOT3 promotes stomatal opening, while OST1, a key reg

SPEECHLESS duplication in grasses expands potential for environmental regulation of stomatal development.

Plants regulate stomatal development and function to acquire atmospheric carbon dioxide for photosynthesis while minimizing water loss. The ancestral basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor (TF) gene that drove stomata production in early land plants diversified to become paralogs SPEECHLESS (SPCH), MUTE, and FAMA. Extant grasses exhibit a particularly interesting set of duplications and losses of SPCH. Using phylogenetic methods, we tracked the history of SPCH duplications. Brachypodium distachyon and Oryza sativa plants bearing mutations in either SPCH1 or SPCH2, and B. distachyon plants
