Hemolytic activity and biofilm-formation among clinical isolates of group B streptococcus causing acute urinary tract infection and asymptomatic bacteriuria.

Streptococcus agalactiae, also known as group B Streptococcus, is an aetiological agent of urinary tract infection (UTI) in adults, including cystitis, pyelonephritis and asymptomatic bacteriuria (ABU). Whereas ABU-causing S. agalactiae (ABSA) have been shown to grow and achieve higher culture denstity in human urine compared to uropathogenic S. agalactiae (UPSA) other phenotypic distinctions between S. agalactiae isolated from different forms of UTI are not known. Here, we define the hemolytic activities and biofilm-formation of a collection of clinical isolates of UPSA, ABSA and recurrent S.…

The first documented case of hemorrhagic stroke caused by Group B streptococcal meningitis.

We report the case of a 47 year-old female with Streptococcus agalactiae (Group B beta-hemolytic streptococcus) meningitis complicated by hemorrhagic stroke. The patient presented to the emergency department with altered mental status, agitation, confusion, respiratory distress and fever of one-day duration. Labs showed left shift leukocytosis. CSF exhibited a high white blood cell count with a predominant population of polymononuclear cells, high glucose and protein concentration. CSF cultures grew S. agalactiae. Despite appropriate antimicrobial treatment, her mental status did not improve a…

Bacterial sacroiliitis and gluteal abscess after dilation and curettage for incomplete abortion.

BACKGROUND: Pyogenic infection with Streptococcus agalactiae is a potentially life-threatening disease associated with significant morbidity and mortality. This type of infection has seldom been reported as a complication of dilation and curettage after an incomplete abortion. CASE: A young woman presented to the emergency department with rapidly progressive left-sided lower back pain, general malaise, and chills evolving over the previous 48-hours after dilation and curettage for incomplete abortion. Streptococcus agalactiae was isolated in the blood. The patient developed pelvic osteomyelit…

Fulminant group B Streptococcal necrotizing fasciitis in a patient with undiagnosed malignancy: a case report.

Group A Streptococcus is well established as the most common pathogen causing necrotizing fasciitis. In contrast, Group B Streptococcus (GBS, or Streptococcus agalactiae) is a rare cause of necrotizing fasciitis, particularly in adults. We present the case of a patient who developed a fulminant case of GBS necrotizing fasciitis on a backdrop of a previously undiagnosed malignancy, and review the relevant literature.

Effects of antibiotic treatment of nonlactating dairy cows on antibiotic resistance patterns of bovine mastitis pathogens.

Antibiotic resistance patterns of the major groups of bovine mastitis pathogens (Streptococcus agalactiae, other streptococci, Staphylococcus aureus, and Staphylococcus epidermidis) were examined by determining the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 13 different antibiotics against bacterial isolates from dairy cattle. The bacterial strains were obtained from milk samples from each cow in 21 New York state dairy herd surveys. In 12 herd surveys (high antibiotic-use group), all 365 cows received antibiotic infusions into the udder at the cessation of each lactation cycle. The 324 animals…

[Antibiotics susceptibility of Streptococcus and Enterococcus: data of Onerba network].

This work was aimed to analyze trends in susceptibility to antibiotics among the main species of beta-hemolytic streptococci involved in community-acquired infections in human (Streptococcus pyogenes and Streptococcus agalactiae), or in animals (Streptococcus suis and Streptococcus uberis) and also among the main enterocci species, Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium. Data were recorded since 1996 through the Onerba networks. S. pyogenes, as the other beta-hemolytic streptococci studied remained fully susceptible to beta-lactam antibiotics. However, susceptibility to macrolides is c…

[Subcutaneous emphysema of unusual extent].

Streptococcus agalactiae, known as a pathogen that causes meningitis and septicemia in neonates, emerges as an invasive organism in nonpregnant adults. This case report describes the fulminant course of a necrotizing fasciitis (NF) with streptococcal toxic shock-like syndrome (STSS) in a 76-year-old diabetic patient caused by S. agalactiae, serotype V. Chronic diseases and immunodeficiency are considered to be risk factors for the acquisition of group B streptococcal disease. Since early surgical treatment in conjunction with antimicrobial and intensive care therapy is critical for the outcome…

Bioinformatics analysis to design a multi-epitope mRNA vaccine against S. agalactiae exploiting pathogenic proteins.

Antibiotic resistance in bacterial pathogen infections is a growing global issue that occurs due to their adaptation to changing environmental conditions. Therefore, producing an efficient vaccine as an alternative approach can improve the immune system, eradicate related pathogens, and overcome this growing problem. Streptococcus agalactiae belongs to group B Streptococcus (GBS). Colonization of GBS during pregnancy is a significant risk factor for infants and young children. S. agalactiae infected population exhibits resistance to beta-lactams, including penicillin and the second-line antibi…

Purulent Pericarditis: An Uncommon Presentation of a Common Organism.

BACKGROUND In the modern antibiotic era, Streptococcus agalactiae infection of the endocardium and pericardial space is a rare occurrence. However, once the disease spreads it can lead to life-threatening illness despite advances in diagnostic and treatment modalities, partly because the symptoms and signs associated with pericarditis are frequently missing, and due to the rarity of the disease, diagnosis is often overlooked. We report an extremely rare case of purulent pericarditis caused by Streptococcus agalactiae. CASE REPORT A 65-year-old diabetic woman presented with generalized weakness…
