Exposure to interpersonal violence and risk of post-traumatic stress disorder among women with borderline personality disorder.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to determine the validity of the Karolinska Interpersonal Violence Scale (KIVS), as a screening tool for PTSD, among women with borderline personality disorder (BPD) and severe suicidal behavior. METHOD: 106 women with BPD and at least two suicide attempts were assessed with the KIVS for exposure to interpersonal violence as a child and as an adult. The screening ability of the KIVS for the diagnosis of PTSD was analyzed using receiver operating characteristic curve analysis. RESULTS: PTSD diagnosis was valid for 61 (58%) women with BPD. The KIVS - exposure of lif

Is it Trauma- or Fantasy-based? Comparing dissociative identity disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, simulators, and controls.

OBJECTIVE: The Trauma Model of dissociative identity disorder (DID) posits that DID is etiologically related to chronic neglect and physical and/or sexual abuse in childhood. In contrast, the Fantasy Model posits that DID can be simulated and is mediated by high suggestibility, fantasy proneness, and sociocultural influences. To date, these two models have not been jointly tested in individuals with DID in an empirical manner. METHOD: This study included matched groups [patients (n = 33) and controls (n = 32)] that were compared on psychological Trauma and Fantasy measures: diagnosed genuine

Hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis function in dissociative disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, and healthy volunteers.

BACKGROUND: This study investigated basal and stress-induced hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA)-axis alterations in dissociative disorders (DDs). METHODS: Forty-six subjects with DD without lifetime post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), 35 subjects with PTSD, and 58 healthy comparison (HC) subjects, free of current major depression, were studied as inpatients. After a 24-hour urine collection and hourly blood sampling for ambient cortisol determination, a low-dose dexamethasone suppression test was administered, followed by the Trier Social Stress Test. RESULTS: The DD group had significa

Zebrafish Model in Illuminating the Complexities of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorders: A Unique Research Tool.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a debilitating psychological condition that may develop in certain individuals following exposure to life-threatening or traumatic events. Distressing symptoms, including flashbacks, are characterized by disrupted stress responses, fear, anxiety, avoidance tendencies, and disturbances in sleep patterns. The enduring effects of PTSD can profoundly impact personal and familial relationships, as well as social, medical, and financial stability. The prevalence of PTSD varies among different populations and is influenced by the nature of the traumatic event.

Electrophysiological markers of altered affective information processing in post-traumatic stress disorder.

We used magnetoencephalography (MEG) to characterize the cortical and autonomic nervous system activity associated with affective information processing in PTSD. Participants were service members assigned to one of two groups based on whether they met (n = 36) or did not meet (n = 48) the DSM-V criteria for PTSD. MEG recordings were performed while participants viewed and rated for pleasantness images with positive affective valence (set 1) and neutral images (set 2). Higher amplitudes of the early (75 ms-150 ms) neuromagnetic evoked responses to positive vs. neutral images indicated that the

Resource management and post-traumatic stress disorder in peacekeepers: A qualitative exploratory study.

The high variability in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) prevalence among peacekeepers facing similar trauma underscores that factors beyond exposure determine outcomes. Based on Conservation of Resources (COR) theory, this qualitative study identified the primary risk and protective factors shared by peacekeepers and, as a secondary objective, conducted a preliminary, hypothesis-generating comparison between those with and without probable PTSD. Semi-structured interviews with 32 Portuguese peacekeepers from various missions were transcribed and thematically analyzed using NVivo. The PCL

Post-traumatic stress disorder and cardiometabolic dysfunction: Molecular mechanisms and therapeutic targets.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a complex psychiatric condition affecting approximately 6.1% of the US population and is characterized by intrusive memories, trauma avoidance, emotional dysregulation, and hyperarousal. The disorder is associated with significant neurobiological changes, including structural and functional alterations in key brain regions such as the amygdala, hippocampus, corpus callosum, prefrontal cortex, and premotor cortex. Neurologically, PTSD is marked by heightened amygdala activity, reduced ventromedial prefrontal cortex activation, and significant cognitive i

The neuroscientific basis of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD): From brain to treatment.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a debilitating mental health condition resulting from exposure to traumatic events, marked by persistent psychological distress and impairment in daily functioning. Risk factors for PTSD include genetic predispositions, neurobiological factors, as well as psychosocial and environmental influences. Specific demographic groups, such as veterans, first responders, and individuals in high-risk environments, are more susceptible to developing the disorder. Despite growing research, there remain gaps in understanding the full pathophysiology of PTSD, and exis

Post-traumatic stress disorder specific to parents in the neonatal intensive care unit.

INTRODUCTION: The experience of having an infant admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) can be highly traumatic for parents, potentially leading to symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Despite the significant emotional impact of the NICU experience, the prevalence rates of probable PTSD among NICU parents, as measured by validated Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, (DSM-5) self-report instruments, have not been extensively documented. The aim of this study was to address this gap. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this pilot study was to asses

[The use of violence in military personnel suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder].

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a common psychological pathology in the general population, but also in the military, given the operational context. Several complementary theories based on neuroscience and psychoanalysis have sought to explain the links between PTSD and violent acts. Violence is seen as an expression of the illness, acting as a symptom of traumatic repetition, or as evidence of behavioral changes at work. The consequences of PTSD and violence impact all the individual's bio-psycho-social spheres. Prevention policies have been developed in the military environment to d

Association of delirium with post-traumatic stress disorder: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Delirium, a prevalent form of acute brain dysfunction, is characterized by perceptual disturbances that may lead to the formation of delusional memories. This pathological process could subsequently elevate the risk of developing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, the findings of previous research are inconsistent, and the association has not been systematically evaluated. Therefore, this study attempts to clarify the epidemiological relationship between delirium and PTSD as well as its clinical significance through a thorough integration of the available data, aiming t
