BACKGROUND: The true involvement of the submandibular gland in primary oral cancer seems quite uncommon.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the pathologic records of 342 patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma who underwent wide excision of primary oral cancer and simultaneous neck dissection from January 2000 to December 2003.

The administration of 5-fluorouracil (FU) and leucovorin (LV) to rats induced a previously unreported sialoadenitis-like toxicity. Four different treatment regimens were used: daily-times-5 iv or ip injections of LV (200 mg/kg) followed 30 minutes later by FU (27.5 mg/kg or 35 mg/kg). A case of an isolated submandibular gland metastasis from a clinically occult papillary thyroid carcinoma is described in a 46-year old lady. Initial surgery was done based on the fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) report of adenocarcinoma of the submandibular gland. Histopathologic examination of the specimen suggested a metastatic papillary carcinoma. Occult papillary carcinoma in the thyroid was found by multiple blind FNACs. Subsequently to near-total thyroidectomy, no other site of metastasis was found on radio-iodine scanning.

BACKGROUND: The regulation of programmed cell death is critical to developmental homeostasis and normal morphogenesis of embryonic tissues. Survivin, a member of the inhibitors of apoptosis protein (IAP) family primarily expressed in embryonic cells, is both an anti-apoptosis and a pro-survival factor. The data presented here provide evidence that the abundance of the ALG7 protein product, GPT, correlates with high proliferative activity during the postnatal development of the hamster SMG development, and that it becomes downregulated with differentiation. Based on our previous studies with yeast, changes in the level of ALG7 expression may be necessary for the events directing salivary cell polarization, migration, differentiation, and apoptosis at distinct developmental stages.
