Choledochoduodenostomy in a cat with extrahepatic biliary obstruction: simple side-to-side anastomosis technique.

CASE SUMMARY: An 8-year-old castrated male mixed-breed cat was presented with recurrent vomiting, weight loss and abdominal distension. Blood work revealed hyperbilirubinaemia and elevated liver enzyme activities. Abdominal ultrasound and CT showed marked dilation and obstruction of the common bile duct (CBD) due to chronic cholecystitis and cholangiohepatitis. The cat was diagnosed with CBD obstruction secondary to chronic cholecystitis and cholangiohepatitis and was initially treated with antibiotics and prednisolone. Surgical intervention was performed because of complete CBD obstruction an

Isolation of aerobic bacteria from surgical site infections following orthopaedic operations in cats and dogs.

Surgical site infections (SSIs) cause significant complications in the postoperative period in veterinary surgeries. Determining the aetiology of infections is crucial for increasing treatment success rates. This study aims to assess treatment processes by identifying the bacterial agents responsible for infections occurring in cats and dogs after orthopaedic operations and to determine the antimicrobial resistance profiles of these agents. Strains isolated from SSIs were retrospectively analysed in patients brought to the Surgical Clinic of Siirt University Animal Health Application and Resea

Subtotal Cervical Esophagectomy and Anastomosis in an Ostrich (Struthio camelus domesticus).

An adult, female, captive ostrich (Struthio camelus domesticus) was referred to a veterinary teaching hospital for a 2-week history of lethargy and a mass effect in the proximal cervical region. Physical examination revealed a fistula in the middle cervical esophagus surrounded by devitalized and necrotic tissue; feed material was found leaking from the site. Cervical radiography identified an esophageal stricture with anterior dilation due to the accumulation of feed. After receiving supportive care for 48 hours, the patient's overall status improved, allowing partial esophagectomy and resect

Anicteric Gallbladder Rupture with Elevated Bile Acids in Abdominal Effusion in a Dog with Cholecystitis.

Anicteric gallbladder rupture has been rarely described in veterinary medicine, and, generally, it has been related to gallbladder wall necrosis secondary to gallbladder mucocele. A 5 yr old, male, neutered Labrador retriever presented for acute onset anorexia, lethargy, and vomiting. Cholecystitis was diagnosed based on the ultrasonographic findings and bactibilia, and, consequently, medical treatment was established. Despite improvement of the patient, a focal ultrasound of the hepatobiliary tract was performed 72 hr after admission for reassessment, revealing gallbladder wall thickening and

Rectal duplication in an adult cat: a novel transanal surgical approach.

CASE SUMMARY: A 3-year and 8-month-old male entire European domestic shorthair cat was presented with a history of recurrent rectal prolapse, straining and pain when defaecating. Previous non-surgical and surgical treatments had not provided a satisfactory result. Rectal prolapse had recurred within 2 weeks of treatment. Upon clinical examination, an intraluminal mass could be palpated rectally. A CT scan examination revealed the mass was of a cystic nature and the cyst was surgically excised via a transanal approach. On histological evaluation, the cyst walls consisted of three of the layers

Quadricuspid aortic valve and a ventricular septal defect in a horse.

BACKGROUND: Quadricuspid aortic valve (QAV) and ventricular septal defect (VSD) are congenital heart defects and have been described in both human and veterinary medical literature. CASE PRESENTATION: A 5-year-old half-bred bay stallion was referred for surgical castration. Cardiac murmurs were heard on the presurgical clinical examination and the cardiac examination revealed subcutaneous oedema, tachycardia with a precodrial thrill and a grade 5/6 pansystolic murmur, which was heard on auscultation of the right and left side of the chest. Examination of the B-mode echocardiograms revealed th

Large interarcuate spaces in the cervical vertebral column of the tyrolean mountain sheep.

Large interarcual spaces have been described between the arcus vertebrae C5/C6 and C6/C7 in the cervical vertebral column of Nubian goats. This aperture enables direct access to spinal cord and rootlets without the need to perform a hemilaminectomy. The present study was performed in order to determine whether these large interarcual spaces can also be found in the vertebral column of the Tyrolean mountain sheep, as this small ruminant, which is anatomically very similar to the Nubian goat, is frequently used for experimental purposes at the Surgical University Clinic in Austria. The carcasses

A new airway spiral stent designed to maintain airway architecture with an atraumatic removal after full epithelization-Research of feasibility and viability in canine patients with tracheomalacia.

OBJECTIVE: Surgical management of tracheomalacia is a challenge, with current treatments still presenting numerous complications. In the field of veterinary medicine, this same pathology is present in a significant number of dogs. For this reason, we present an experimental clinical trial performed on canines with tracheobronchomalacia, using a new atraumatic removable tracheal spiral stent (SS). Both implantation procedure and clinical improvement have been analyzed in this study. METHODS: In this study, four small dogs, a mean weight of 4.89 kg and body condition scores IV-V, were included.

Integrated Biomarker Assessment for Prognosis in Canine Mammary Carcinomas: Complementary Roles of Serum CA 15-3 and Immunohistochemistry Ki-67, and COX-2.

CMTs are biologically heterogeneous neoplasms for which reliable prognostic biomarkers remain limited. This study investigated the clinical significance of serum cancer antigen 15-3 (CA 15-3) and the immunohistochemical expression of Ki-67 and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) in CMTs. Fifty-four female dogs with histologically confirmed CMTs and twelve healthy controls were prospectively evaluated. Serum CA 15-3 concentrations were measured before surgery and at 21 and 90 days post-mastectomy, while Ki-67 and COX-2 expression were assessed in tumor tissues. CA 15-3 was undetectable in controls and sig
