Passive diffusion of pilocarpine following microneedle pretreatment is ineffective for palmar sweat induction.

Palmar sweating plays a key role in enhancing hand grip function and is implicated in clinical conditions such as hyperhidrosis and anhidrosis. However, our understanding of the mechanisms underlying palmar sweating remains unresolved. This is in part because pharmacological investigation of palmar sweat gland function is limited by the thick stratum corneum, which restricts transdermal drug delivery. We therefore assessed whether passive diffusion of pilocarpine induced by pretreatment of palmar skin with microneedles can induce sweating. In 30 healthy adults (15 males), sweat induction was c…

Multiplexed SERS Profiling of Gout Biomarkers in Sweat via Polymer-Mediated Ag Nanoflakes.

Personalized management of gout requires profiling multiple metabolites over time. Sweat offers a noninvasive matrix for such profiling. However, simultaneous detection of trace metabolic precursors amidst a complex chemical background remains a major analytical challenge. In this study, a flexible surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrate is developed for the multiplexed monitoring of a gout biomarker panel, including uric acid (UA), xanthine, hypoxanthine, and creatinine. The sensor is fabricated via in situ droplet-grown Ag nanostructures on microwell-patterned polydimethylsiloxa…

Real-time nanomolar vitamin monitoring in sweat using an electrochemical skin-attached device.

Invasive and inconvenient blood tests hinder the diagnosis and treatment of micronutrient deficiencies, which affect billions worldwide. Wearable sweat sensors offer a noninvasive and real-time alternative. However, on-body monitoring of multiple low-abundance vitamins in sweat remains challenging. Here, we show a wearable electrochemical platform that utilizes bioreceptor-functionalized gold nanoflower/sulfur and nitrogen codoped carbon to detect six low-concentration vitamins in sweat (vitamins B1, B2, B7, B9, B12, and D) with nanomolar-level sensitivity. Integrated system incorporates ionto…

High accuracy sensor for two-parameter detection of adrenaline and pH in sweat.

Here, we report a wearable device integrating a sweat collection unit and a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) - based sensor for the non-invasive detection of adrenaline (AD). In this paper, a new MIP method is proposed, which uses AD molecule as template, and electropolymerizes aniline and 3-aminophenylboronic acid (3-APBA) to form molecular imprinting. Surface modifications, incorporating carbon nanotubes (CNT) and MIP optimization, enhanced the device's specific surface area by 166.45 % (±2.82 %), yielding a wide linear detection range of AD (10-6 μmol L-1 to 103 μmol L-1). In this study,…

Permeable Dual-Mode Pressure-Temperature Sensing Textile with Sweat Adsorption and Evaporation Capability.

Permeable electronics are promising in improving the wearing comfort but still fail in dealing with the sweating issue. Herein, we develop a flexible and breathable dual-mode pressure-temperature sensor with sweat adsorption and evaporation capability. The device is constructed on a bilayer thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU)/polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofiber mat through electrospinning, where the PAN nanofibers are hydrophilic for sweat adsorption, while the TPU nanofibers are hydrophobic to block sweat invasion into the sensing structure. The diffused sweat evaporates into moisture, which then …

A bioinspired microfluidic wearable sensor for multiday sweat sampling, transport, and metabolic analysis.

Wearable sweat sensors enable noninvasive real-time biochemical monitoring, holding immense potential for personalized health care applications. However, achieving prolonged and reliable sweat sampling, along with stable biochemical analysis, remains challenging due to inconsistent secretion, rapid evaporation, and the reliance on external stimulation. Here, we present BMS3, a bioinspired microfluidic wearable sweat sensor system designed for multiday continuous metabolic monitoring. BMS3 integrates hierarchically graded microchannels and superhydrophobic-superhydrophilic Janus membranes, insp…

Characterizing individuals with elevated sweat chloride results in the absence of CFTR variants.

BACKGROUND: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a multi-system disease caused by CFTR dysfunction. Genetic defects in the CFTR protein cause impaired chloride and bicarbonate secretion on the apical surface of epithelial cells throughout the body. Classically, the diagnosis of CF is established based on a clinical presentation suggestive of CF along with two elevated sweat chloride test results (≥ 60 mmol/L) or the presence of two pathogenic disease-causing CFTR variants. This study aimed to characterize and compare a subset of patients who present with a CF-like phenotype and elevated sweat chlorides wit…

Heterogeneity of CFTR modulator-induced sweat chloride concentrations in people with cystic fibrosis.

BACKGROUND: Sweat chloride (SC) concentrations in people with cystic fibrosis (PwCF) reflect relative CF transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) protein function, the primary CF defect. Populations with greater SC concentrations tend to have lesser CFTR function and more severe disease courses. CFTR modulator treatment can improve CFTR function within specific CF genotypes and is commonly associated with reduced SC concentration. However, SC concentrations do not necessarily fall to concentrations seen in the unaffected population, suggesting potential for better CFTR treatment outcomes. We…

Sweat-based stress screening with gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry and electronic nose.

BACKGROUND: Diagnosis of stress generally involves uses of questionnaires which can provide biased results. The more reliable approach relies on observation of individual symptoms by psychiatrists which is time consuming and could not be applicable for massive scale screening tests. This research established alternative approaches with gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (GC-IMS) and electronic nose (e-nose) to perform fast stress screening based on fingerprinting of highly volatile compounds in headspaces of sweat. The investigated samples were obtained from 154 female nurse voluntee…

A wearable colorimetric sweat pH sensor-based smart textile for health state diagnosis.

Sweat pH is an important indicator for diagnosing disease states, such as cystic fibrosis. However, conventional pH sensors are composed of large brittle mechanical parts and need additional instruments to read signals. These pH sensors have limitations for practical wearable applications. In this study, we propose wearable colorimetric sweat pH sensors based on curcumin and thermoplastic-polyurethane (C-TPU) electrospun-fibers to diagnose disease states by sweat pH monitoring. This sensor aids in pH monitoring by changing color in response to chemical structure variation from enol to di-keto …

Sweat conductivity diagnostic accuracy for cystic fibrosis: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of diagnostic test accuracy studies to summarise the properties of sweat conductivity (SC) to rule in/out cystic fibrosis (CF). DATA SOURCE: We searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Google Scholar, SciELO and LILACS up to 13 March 2023. STUDY SELECTION: We selected prospective and retrospective diagnostic test accuracy studies which compared SC, measured through two well-established and commercially available devices, that is, Nanoduct or Sweat-Chek Analyser, to quantitative measurement of sweat chloride. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES…

Photothermal Janus fabrics enabling persistent directional sweat-wicking in personal wet-thermal management.

Directional sweat-wicking by Janus fabrics has gained substantial attention in promoting personal wet-thermal management for optimal human comfort. During intense physical exercise, excessive sweating can cause the flooding of fabrics and weaken their wicking capabilities once the inner capillary channels are saturated. To address this issue, we develop a photothermal Janus fabric through a facile polydopamine (PDA) deposition followed by single-sided spray-coating of hydrophobic polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Such innovative fabrics enable directional sweat-wicking through a Janus structure and…
