Reduced levels of total iron binding capacity and unsaturated iron binding capacity were observed in the blood of trichinous and iron-injected trichinous pigs. No change was observed in their serum iron and saturation concentration levels. Also, reduced iron concentration levels were observed in the livers of trichinous pigs, while increased iron concentration levels were observed in the spleens of trichinous pigs and the livers and spleens of iron-injected pigs. This contribution describes a modern technique of producing general anesthesia in the Göttingen minipig. The method of anesthesia selected is dependent on the duration and type of surgery. The drugs used to produce anesthesia should not interfere with the experimental aims, therefore only drugs with well known actions and a standardized anesthesiological procedure should be used. Climazolam, Ketamine and atropine are preferred for induction of anesthesia. The protection conferred on pregnant gilts by 2 commercially available leptospira interrogans serovars pomona and tarassovi bacterins was evaluated. Gilts vaccinated either 3, 6 or 12 months prior to natural challenge with L. interrogans serovar pomona had significantly lower abortion rates (2% vs 69%) and foetal mortality rates (14% vs 57%) than unvaccinated controls. Poly(A)-containing RNA was isolated from total RNA of swine gastric mucosa by oligo(dT)-cellulose chromatography, and was translated in a wheat germ cell-free system. Analysis of the translation products by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis revealed that pepsinogen was a major translation product and was synthesized as two different molecular forms with apparent molecular weights of 45,000 and 43,000. Multiplication of swine influenza (SW) virus is inhibited by fowl plaque virus (FPV) at the level of RNA synthesis when host cells are infected with both viruses at a high multiplicity of infection. Under these conditions reassortment between the two viruses cannot be detected. The inhibitory effect of FPV is highly reduced and recombinants between the two viruses could be obtained when the cells were superinfected with FPV 1--2 hours after infection with SW virus, or after simultaneous infection with a low multiplicity of infection. Isolates of a Lancefield Group C organism, Streptococcus equisimilis, of sow reproductive tract and young swine joint origin were found to possess type-specific antigens. Capillary precipitin and immunodiffusion tests, done with acid extracts and cross-absorbed rabbit antisera, revealed four serotypes among 62 of 64 isolates.
