Multinodular and vacuolating neuronal tumor is a recently described seizure-associated entity with overlapping features of a malformative an … the fibrillary neuropil-like background. The ganglioid cells showed weak cytoplasmic reactivity for synaptophysin and were nonreactive for neurofilament and chromogranin. CD34-positive stellate cells were present within the nodules. A 50-gene next-generation sequencing panel did not identify any somatic mutations in genomic DNA extracted from the tumor.

We report a case of endocrine cell carcinoma in the sigmoid colon with inferior mesenteric vein (IMV) tumor embolism. A 79-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with narrowing of the stools. We performed colonoscopy, computed tomography and positron emission tomography, which disclosed sigmoid colon cancer with IMV tumor embolism. She underwent sigmoidectomy and lymph node dissection. The tumor was diagnosed as endocrine cell carcinoma (type 4, pSS, med, INFalpha, v3, n1, stage IIIb). Immunohistochemically, chromographin A, synaptophysin, cytokeratin 20 and mucicarmine showed partial sta…

Ectopic production of CRH by a medullary thyroid carcinoma or its metastases is a rare cause of ectopic Cushing's syndrome (ECS). We report … and immunohistochemistry showed that the cells expressed calcitonin, carcino-embryonic antigen and synaptophysin. Further analysis revealed that the material also expressed CRH. This is an unusual case of a CRH-secreting liver metastasis from a medullary thyroid carcinoma 24 years after the initial diagnosis of MTC.

BACKGROUND: Paragangliomas of the head and neck region are not only rare but also unique in that they are derived from the parasympathetic system and are nonsecretory. Orbit represents 1 of the least common sites for head and neck paragangliomas. Orbital paraganglioma remains predominantly a disease of adults, and it has never been reported in infancy earlier. Therefore it is not known if these tumors in infancy behave any differently than their adult counterparts.

A ganglioneuroma is an extremely rare benign neoplasm composed of neural elements, including mature ganglion cells that originate from the sympathetic ganglia. It is located most frequently in the posterior mediastinum and can be found in the retroperitoneum, including the adrenal medulla. It may evolve from a differentiating neuroblastoma or may be diagnosed as a primary ganglioneuroma. Primary orbital ganglioneuromas are extremely rare, with only 2 reported cases in young otherwise-healthy individuals. A single, reported case of bulbar conjunctival ganglioneuromas has been described in water

This report presents the clinical, laboratory, imaging, and pathologic findings in 61 dogs with pheochromocytoma by retrospective evaluation of medical records. Pheochromocytomas were diagnosed by histopathologic examination of tissue specimens in all dogs. Special stains (chromogranin A and synaptophysin) also were used to confirm the chromaffin cell origin of the tumors. Epidemiologic findings were in agreement with previous studies, indicating that pheochromocytomas affect middle-aged to older dogs with no apparent gender or breed predilection. The tumor was considered clinical in 21 dogs (…

A 41-year-old woman with a chronic atrophic gastritis after endoscopic investigation diagnosed a carcinoid at the corpus of the stomach. There were more lesions in the mucosa of the stomach in the form of dysplasias. The labor investigation indicated an hypergastrinaemia. We performed a resection of the basis of the carcinoid. It has shown to be histologically tumor-free as the rest of the stomach. A gastrectomy was not necessary. After resection the patient was under therapy with vitamin B-12. The level of gastrin in blood was normal under this treatment. Two years later the patient remained

Meckel diverticulum is the most common abnormality of the gastrointestinal tract arising from an incomplete obliteration of the vitelline duct during the intrauterine life. Although tumor development in Meckel diverticulum is not a common situation, it can occur due to the persistence of cellular islets with gastric, pancreatic or intestinal origin. The presence of a neuroendocrine tumor arising from Meckel diverticulum is even scarcer. We present the case of a 59-year-old patient in whom a Meckel diverticulum was found during surgery for inguinal hernia; the histopathological and immunohistoc

Pineal parenchymal tumors comprise a rare group of primary neoplasms of the pineal gland. We describe a case involving a 29-year-old woman who presented with signs and symptoms of hydrocephalus secondary to a pineal region tumor obstructing the third ventricle. Surgical resection was performed and pathological analysis revealed a novel diagnosis consistent with a pineal parenchymal tumor of intermediate differentiation (PPTID) with transition to a papillary tumor of the pineal region (PTPR). To our knowledge, this particular pineal region tumor pathology has not yet been reported in the litera

Central neurocytomas are benign neuronal tumours generally found in the lateral or third ventricles. They are rare, comprising < 1% of all brain tumours. It is frequently confused with other tumours of the central nervous system particularly oligodendroglioma. The present study was done to analyse the histopathological features including immunohistochemical profile of these rare tumours. Eight cases were taken up for the study. Seven of the cases had an intraventricular location and one was located outside the ventricles. Increased intracranial pressure was the most common presenting symptom.

Distinctive glioneuronal tumors arising within the cerebrum and displaying neuropil-like islands and tumor cells immunoreactive for neuronal and glial antigens have recently been described. We report a similar tumor in the cervico-thoracic region of the spinal cord in a 44-year-old woman that recurred 1 year later with dissemination to the lumbar dura and cauda equina. The tumor was composed of "rosetted" neuropil islands displaying immunoreactivity for synaptophysin, whereas the intervening tumor cells were more fibrillar and immunoreactive for GFAP. The tumor cell nuclei immediately surround…

A method for quantitative analysis of confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) images of immunofluorescence and lipofuscin in human brain cortical areas is described. Indirect immunofluorescence was used to show the distribution and density of a synaptic vesicle protein--synaptophysin (p38). Dual channel CLSM was used for imaging immunofluorescence and autofluorescence of lipofuscin granules. Special software was developed for quantitative analysis of the CLSM images. The method has been tested in studies of frontal, temporal, motor, visual, and entorhinal cortices in normal and pathological …
