Mills' syndrome is an idiopathic, slowly progressive ascending spastic hemiparesis. Some authors consider it as a unilateral variant of progressive lateral sclerosis. Due to the rarity of the disease and the slow clinical course, this article presents a clinical case and discusses the diagnostic criteria for the syndrome.

TTS is an acute heart failure syndrome that usually affects postmenopausal women. The Syndrome is often preceded by an emotional or physical trigger. TTS strongly resembles acute myocardial infarction from a clinical standpoint and also exhibits ECG changes in the same proportion. There are specific patterns of wall motion abnormalities, based on which, the syndrome can be divided into four types. Neurological and/or psychiatric comorbidities are common in TTS patients. Therapy is based on the hemodynamic state and the presence of left ventricular outflow tract obstruction or cardiogenic shock…

Zinner syndrome is a less common birth anomaly of the Wolffian duct consisting of unilateral kidney absence, ipsilateral ejaculatory duct obstruction, and seminal vesicle cyst. A failure of embryogenesis of the ureteric bud between the fourth and 13th week of gestation results in Zinner syndrome. Conservative treatment is recommended for asymptomatic patients, whereas invasive treatment is reserved for symptomatic patients and for those who have failed conservative treatment. In this case report, we describe the non-specific presentation of lower abdominal pain and dysuria, as well as episodes…

Breast and thoracic deformities of Poland syndrome is a rare malformation known to be difficult to treat. Numerous descriptions of surgical corrections have been published but none achieved to correct severe cases before description of lipomodeling technique. The aim of this article is to present thoraco-mammary deformity of Poland syndrome, corrections techniques already available and therapeutical indications in primary and secondary cases. Constant anomaly of Poland syndrome is agenesis of sterno-costal part of pectoralis major muscle but other muscular anomalies can be associated. Skin and…

In 1933, the Swedish ophthalmologist Hendrik Sjögren was the first to suggest that behind the dryness that several of his patients presented, there could be a systemic disease related to an abnormal immune response. Since then, the term Sjögren's syndrome (SjS) has been used and it has been considered a minor and infrequent disorder compared to other systemic autoimmune diseases (SAD) and, consequently, with little progress both in clinical and therapeutic research. The emergence of new technologies at the end of the 20th century rapidly promoted the development of international projects of gr…

Liddle syndrome is an inherited form of arterial hypertension with autosomal dominant pattern of inheritance. It is caused by activating mutation of genes coding of the epithelial sodium channel in distal nephron. Mutation leads to excessive reabsorbtion of sodium ions and volume expansion resulting in arterial hypertension. Antoher typical laboratory findings are hypokalaemia, low levels of serum aldosteron and metabolic alkalosis. Phenotypic variability makes it difficult to identify patients with Liddle syndrome, often resulting in misdiagnosis and severe complications at early age. Genetic…

Sjögren's syndrome (SjS) is an autoimmune disease characterized by the triad of sicca symptoms, fatigue and pain. This diagnosis is usually made in women at the average age of 60 years. Diagnosis is made when sicca symptoms persist for more than three months, after the exclusion of possible differential diagnoses, and using the ACR/EULAR 2016 classification criteria for SjS. Many organs can be affected in the course of this disease. Xerosis cutis and pruritus are the most common skin manifestations, followed by leukocytoclastic vasculitis and subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus. In addition…

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Richter syndrome (RS) is an uncommon but aggressive evolution of chronic lymphocytic leukemia/small lymphocytic lymphoma (CLL/SLL). RS is an unmet clinical need in the field of CLL. Recent advances in understanding the biology of this condition provide the rationale for testing new therapeutic concepts in order to improve the outcome of patients developing RS, which is so far poor. In this review, we summarize disease characteristics and available therapeutic options for RS.
RECENT FINDINGS: Current regimens with novel agents in monotherapy have shown little impact on survi…

Behçet syndrome is a systemic vasculitis with an unknown aetiology affecting the small and large vessels of the venous and arterial systems. The presence of symptom clusters, regional differences in disease expression and similarities with, for example, Crohn's disease suggest that multiple pathological pathways are involved in Behçet syndrome. These disease features also make formulating disease criteria difficult. Genetic studies have identified HLA-B*51 as a genetic risk factor. However, the low prevalence of HLA-B*51 in many patients with bona fide disease, especially in non-endemic region…

Sheehan syndrome is an underestimated cause of hypopituitarism, which can be either partial or complete. It results from ischaemic necrosis of anterior pituitary during peripartum period leading to loss of one or more pituitary cell lines. Hyperplasia of pituitary gland during pregnancy increases demand for blood supply and at the same time compresses the pituitary gland. Severe postpartum haemorrhage leads to hypovolaemia and vasospasm of supplying vessels resulting in infarction of pituitary tissue. Congenital or acquired thrombophilia and autoimmunity exaggerate this phenomenon. Presentatio…

Sjögren's syndrome (SS) is a common autoimmune disease with a prevalence of 1%. SS affects primarily women between the age of 30 and 50 years. The classic manifestations are sicca symptoms, musculoskeletal pain and fatigue but the disease can affect all organs. SS is associated with the antibody anti-SSA antibodies. The patients have a 15-20 times higher risk of lymphoma and an increased risk of spontaneous abortion and AV-block in life-born children. In this review, we share the diagnostic process and risk stratification and outline the treatments available from private practice.
