Community Infections Linked with Parvovirus B19 Genomic DNA in Wastewater, Texas, USA, 2023-2024.

We assessed concentrations of parvovirus B19 DNA from 2 wastewater treatment plants in a Texas, USA, county with a known outbreak in 2024. Wastewater viral concentrations correlated significantly with clinical cases, demonstrating wastewater's potential for tracking parvovirus B19 infections. Peaks in wastewater concentrations were aligned with the peak in hydrops fetalis diagnoses.

Barriers to finding and maintaining pet-inclusive affordable housing: Tenant experiences in Houston, Texas.

The city of Houston, Texas has a growing deficit of available and affordable rental units for low-income residents. Due to pet policies, the shortage of affordable housing potentially puts renters who own pets at greater risk of housing insecurity. In this qualitative study, we use a community-engaged approach to document the lived experiences of finding and maintaining affordable housing among 24 current, former, and aspiring pet owners. The majority of the participants identified as female, were aged 44-60 years, identified as Black, had a high school education, and were employed full-time o…

HEMATOLOGY AND BIOCHEMICAL REFERENCE INTERVALS FOR FREE-RANGING PRONGHORN (ANTILOCAPRA AMERICANA) IN WEST TEXAS.

Pronghorn (Antilocapra americana) are considered a keystone species of North American grasslands and an important economic source for many landowners in Texas. Pronghorn restoration projects routinely capture and translocate individuals from surplus populations to restoration areas. The objective of this study was to generate normal hematological and biochemical reference intervals (RI) for free-ranging pronghorn populations in Texas as a health monitoring tool for pronghorn restoration efforts. Blood samples were collected by jugular venipuncture and divided among an EDTA tube, serum separato…

Socioeconomic status and post-arrest care after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in Texas.

INTRODUCTION: Post-arrest care after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) is critical to optimizing outcomes, but little is known about socioeconomic disparities in post-arrest care. We evaluated the association of socioeconomic status (SES) with post-arrest care and outcomes. METHODS: We included adult OHCAs surviving to hospital admission from the 2014-2020 Texas Cardiac Arrest Registry to Enhance Survival (CARES) and stratified cases into SES quartiles based on census tract data. Outcomes were targeted temperature management (TTM), percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), survival to dis…

Urban-rural residence and birth defects prevalence in Texas: a phenome-wide association study.

BACKGROUND: Some assessments indicate the prevalence of certain birth defects varies by urban-rural status. We evaluated associations between urban-rural residence and a spectrum of birth defects, using a phenome-wide association study approach in Texas, a state with large urban centers and expansive rural areas. METHODS: Data for birth defects and livebirths during 1999-2015 were obtained from the Texas Birth Defects Registry and the Center for Health Statistics. Maternal residence was classified as urban or rural, and prevalence ratios (PR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated …

Characterizing Flaring from Unconventional Oil and Gas Operations in South Texas Using Satellite Observations.

Over the past decade, increases in high-volume hydraulic fracturing for oil and gas extraction in the United States have raised concerns with residents living near wells. Flaring, or the combustion of petroleum products into the open atmosphere, is a common practice associated with oil and gas exploration and production, and has been under-examined as a potential source of exposure. We leveraged data from the Visible Infrared Imaging Spectroradiometer (VIIRS) Nightfire satellite product to characterize the extent of flaring in the Eagle Ford Shale region of south Texas, one of the most product…

Transverse Myelitis and Guillain-Barré Syndrome Associated with Cat-Scratch Disease, Texas, USA, 2011.

We describe a case of coexisting transverse myelitis and Guillain-Barré syndrome related to infection with Bartonella henselae proteobacterium and review similar serology-proven cases. B. henselae infection might be emerging as a cause of myelitis and Guillain-Barré syndrome and should be considered as an etiologic factor in patients with such clinical presentations.

Contemporary Trends of Reported Sepsis Among Maternal Decedents in Texas: A Population-Based Study.

INTRODUCTION: Recent studies indicate that death certificate-based single-cause-of-death diagnoses can substantially underestimate the contribution of sepsis to mortality in the general population and among maternal decedents. There are no population-based data in the United States on the patterns of the contribution of sepsis to pregnancy-associated deaths. METHODS: We studied the Texas Inpatient Public Use Data File to identify pregnancy-associated hospitalizations with reported hospital death during 2001-2010. We then examined the annual reporting of sepsis, and that of other reported most…

Effect of aerial insecticide spraying on West Nile virus disease--north-central Texas, 2012.

During 2012, four north-central Texas counties experienced high West Nile virus (WNV) disease incidence. Aerial insecticide spraying was conducted in two counties. To evaluate the effect of spraying on WNV disease, we calculated incidence rate ratios (IRRs) in treated and untreated areas by comparing incidence before and after spraying; for unsprayed areas, before and after periods were defined by using dates from a corresponding sprayed area. In treated areas, WNV neuroinvasive disease incidence before and after spraying was 7.31/100,000 persons and 0.28/100,000 persons, respectively; the IRR…

Leptomeningeal metastases from genitourinary cancer: the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center experience.

Leptomeningeal metastasis (LM) most commonly arise from breast and lung cancers, and melanoma. Genitourinary cancer (including ovarian, prostate, uterine kidney and bladder) rarely cause LM, with only case reports published. The aims of the study were to describe cases of patients with Genitourinary cancer and Leptomeningeal metastasis, to estimate its prevalence and describe its behavior and outcome. We queried the MD Anderson database for patients with LM and genitourinary cancer between 1978 and 2011. The files of all patients with genitourinary cancer and leptomeningeal disease were retros

Outbreak of cryptosporidiosis associated with a man-made chlorinated lake--Tarrant County, Texas, 2008.

In July 2008, clusters of laboratory-confirmed cryptosporidiosis cases and reports of gastrointestinal illness in persons who visited a lake were reported to Tarrant County Public Health. In response, epidemiologic, laboratory, and environmental health investigations were initiated. A matched case-control study determined that swallowing the lake water was associated with illness (adjusted odds ratio = 16.3; 95% confidence interval: 2.5-infinity). The environmental health investigation narrowed down the potential sources of contamination. Laboratory testing detected Cryptosporidium hominis in
