Children born with hypoxic-ischemic (HI) brain injury account for a significant number of live births wherein no clinical treatment is available. Limited clinical trials of stem cell therapy have been initiated in a number-of neurological disorders, but the preclinical evidence of a cell-based therapy for neonatal HI injury remains in its infancy. One major postulated mechanism underlying therapeutic benefits of stem cell therapy involves stimulation of endogenous neurogenesis via transplantation of exogenous stem cells. To this end, transplantation has targeted neurogenic sites, such as the h

We report a patient with Legionella pneumophila pneumonia after infliximab therapy for rheumatoid arthritis. Arguments are discussed for an emerging incidence of infections with intracellular microorganisms, granulomatous and non-granulomatous, in patients having received anti-TNFalpha therapy. These discussions consist of clinical and epidemiological data, experimental data in animals, theoretical evidence, and we provide a possible pathogenetic mechanism.

The so-called young adult chronic patients suffer from mental disorders in the motivational and social sphere. Among others, work therapy is one of the methods of the treatment. The agricultural work therapy can supply with a large variety of gradually adapted working facilities. The demanding property of nature improves motivational disorders. Animals and plants as mediators help cure social disorders. Agricultural work therapy can contribute to find ones profession and can have psychotherapeutic effects.

The ability of cefoxitin, clindamycin, imipenem, meropenem, metronidazole and piperacillin-tazobactam to cause gram-negative anaerobic bacteria to release endotoxin and the influence of such liberated endotoxin on antibiotic efficacy were investigated in in-vivo experiments in animal models. Experimental infections in various animal models (mice, hamster and infant rats) with cultures of wild and reference strains of Bacteroides fragilis group and Fusobacterium spp. were carried out by injecting these animals with different inocula (10(6), 10(7) and 10(8) cfu/ml) of the bacterial suspension, A

Regenerative medicine therapies have become significant tools for treatment of joint, soft tissue, and a variety of other conditions in animals and humans. Regenerative medicine aims to restore form and function of injured tissues using the body's own resources such as cells, fluids (ie, plasma and serum), and their resulting anti-inflammatory and prohealing cytokines. Platelet-rich plasma and other hemoderivatives have application for joint disorders such as osteoarthritis, cartilage injury, synovitis, and soft tissue injuries. These therapies achieve anti-inflammatory and healing effects wit

Hemodialysis improves survival for animals with acute kidney injury beyond what would be expected with conventional management of the same animals. Clinical evidence and experience in human patients suggest a role for earlier intervention with renal replacement to avoid the morbidity of uremia and to promote better metabolic stability and recovery. For a large population of animal patients, it is the advanced standard for the management of acute and chronic uremia, life-threatening poisoning, and fluid overload for which there is no alternative therapy.

Acute intracranial hypertension was induced in cats by progressive inflation of an epidural balloon. Changes in intracranial pressure (ICP), mean arterial pressure (MAP), cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP), heart rate (HR), electroencephalogram (EEG), and pupil size were studied in untreated animals and in animals that had received barbiturates at different stages during the experiment. In animals pretreated with barbiturates, the increase in ICP during balloon expansion was significantly less than in untreated animals (p less than 0.001). The CPP, initially higher in untreated animals, was not

Chagas Disease (CD) affects around eight million people worldwide. It is considered a neglected disease that presents few treatment options with efficacy only in the acute phase. Nanoparticles have many positive qualities for treating parasite infections and may be effectively and widely employed in clinical medicine. This research aimed to evaluate the nanoencapsulated benznidazole treatment in animals experimentally infected with Trypanosoma cruzi. To analyze the treatment efficacy, we evaluated survival during thirty days, parasitemia, genotoxicity, and heart and liver histopathology. Thirt

The most common cause of laryngitis is the laryngopharyngeal reflux disease. The symptoms of laryngitis can be hoarseness, globus, chronic cough, voice fatigue, throat pain, and dysphagia. Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) is beneficial to reduce the pain and inflammatory response without side effects. Therefore, LLLT may be a useful tool for the treatment of laryngitis. This study proposes to analyze the effect of laser therapy in a model of reflux-induced laryngitis. The animals were randomly put into three groups: control--non-intubated; nasogastric intubation--intubated; and nasogastric intub

A new triazole, itraconazole, was studied as oral therapy of paracoccidioidomycosis in a murine model. The Paracoccidioides brasiliensis isolate, susceptible to itraconazole in vitro, was given by intranasal challenge, producing acute pulmonary and disseminated disease. Therapy was given twice daily over 4 weeks, and animals observed over 2 months. The infection was lethal for 70-80% of controls (untreated or polyethylene glycol diluent), whereas all treated animals, given 10-200 mg kg-1 day-1, survived. Itraconazole was ineffective in eradicating lung disease in survivors, though effective in

Local recurrence after radical surgery is a major problem with many primary solid cancers. The use of radiofrequency hyperthermia (RFHT) as adjuvant therapy to surgery was explored in the Fischer bladder carcinoma (FBCa)/F344 rat tumor system. After subcutaneous innoculation of 34 rats with 10(6) FBCa cells in suspension, RFHT was administered to 17 animals on days 1, 5, 8, and 12. The development of palpable tumors was delayed but not prevented, and tumor growth was retarded in RFHT-treated animals. In another experiment 40 rats were innoculated by subcutaneous trocar injection with a 1 mm3 p

OBJECTIVES: Antiresorptive agent-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (ARONJ) and infectious osteomyelitis of the jaw (OMJ) in antiresorptive-naïve patients are different disease entities. Although osteoclast inhibition is at the center of the pathogenesis of ARONJ, the role of osteoclast inhibition in infectious OMJ is unknown. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of bisphosphonate osteoclast inhibition in infectious OMJ.
METHODS: Osteomyelitis was induced in mice by S. aureus inoculation. The establishment of OMJ was verified by the culture of bone marrow samples obtained fro

Small mammals and birds present unique challenges for the clinician in treatment of life-threatening conditions. Numerous books have been written on shock, critical care, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation in small animals. The basic protocols can be adapted for use in small mammals and birds. A general review of the pathophysiology of shock is important to the understanding of fluid therapy plans discussed in this article. Using the general principles of cardiopulmonary-cerebral resuscitation in small animals, protocols are discussed for use in birds and small mammals.

The dosage form of medamine-medapec was found to have a high antiechinococcal activity in experiments on laboratory animals. Its efficacy was shown in treating larval alveolar echinococciasis in mice and cotton rats with different doses and courses as compared with medamine and albendazole. It was ascertained that for its high larvicidal activity, medapec should be given to animals regularly during a day. The daily dose of the drug should be gradually increased. In complying with these conditions, the duration of effective courses of therapy drastically reduces.

Investigations suggest that hyperglycemia superimposed on hypoxia-ischemia or cerebral ischemia accentuates brain damage in adult experimental animals and humans. Such does not appear to be the case in immature animals. The present review discusses fundamental differences in immature and adult brain metabolism which account for the age-specific paradox. Based on currently available data, it is recommended that glucose supplementation not be curtailed during labor and delivery of asphyxiated human infants; on the contrary, glucose therapy might substantially reduce hypoxic-ischemic brain damage

A series of experiments were undertaken to compare oncotic gradients with osmotic gradients in the treatment of experimental cerebral oedema. Oedema was produced in dogs by a left parietal cold lesion. Animals were divided into three treatment groups. Group 1, the control animals, received intravenous crystalloid solutions after the cold lesion. Group 2 animals received mannitol, 1 gm/kg IV, one and four hours after the lesion. Group 3 animals received albumin, 1 gm/kg IV, one hour after the lesion, then a continuous albumin infusion. Serum osmotic and oncotic pressures were monitored hourly.

Treatment with type-specific IgG antibody to Pseudomonas aeruginosa significantly increased rates of survival after experimental induction of pseudomonas pneumonia in leukopenic dogs. Longer survival times were correlated with higher titers of circulating antibody in serum; however, no animals treated with antibody alone were long-term survivors. Subsequent development of sepsis or the recovery of Pseudomonas from infected lung tissue was not altered by treatment with antibody. Therapy with granulocyte transfusions plus gentamicin was associated with a 27% rate of long-term survival. Passive i
