PSMA-targeted PET/CT can be used for diagnosis and staging of clear cell renal cell carcinoma. A 68-year-old woman with suspected hepatic metastases from clear cell renal cell carcinoma underwent PET/CT with 68Ga-PSMA, which showed a focus of moderately increased tracer uptake in the right thyroid lobe. The localization and biological roles of the multifunctional cell type mast cells remain unclear in subacute thyroiditis that is characterized by both epithelioid granuloma formation and thyroid tissue repair. We examined their immunolocalization with tryptase of a mast cell marker, using the biopsy specimens from 12 cases. A 22-year-old female with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in complete remission received a conditioning regimen containing antithymocyte globulin for an unrelated bone marrow transplant (BMT). After BMT, the patient suffered from cytomegalovirus (CMV) pneumonitis with markedly high levels of CMV antigenemia, activated prothrombin time (APTT) prolongation, and subacute thyroiditis. Recovery of CD4+ cells was delayed as long as 1 year after BMT. An association between these three episodes and viral infection due to the delayed recovery of CD4+ cells is suggested.

New data on viruses isolated from patients with subacute thyroiditis de Quervain are reported. Characteristic morphological, cytological, some physico-chemical and biological features of the isolated viruses are described. A possible role of these viruses in human and animal health disorders is discussed. The isolated viruses remain unclassified so far.

Subacute thyroiditis can present as fever of unknown origin, particularly in elderly patients. Absence of neck pain or thyroid tenderness does not exclude the diagnosis. Thyroid function tests and inflammatory markers are key to diagnosis. Corticosteroids lead to rapid symptomatic improvement in moderate-to-severe cases. A transient hypothyroid phase is common and often resolves without long-term thyroxine therapy.
