The pattern and distribution of periodontitis were investigated in 162 randomly selected dogs available for necropsy in veterinary practice. There were 82 males and 80 females of 50 different breeds (150 dogs were pure-bred and 12 were mongrels, aged between 7 months and 14 yr. Presence of periodontitis was determined by assessment of alveolar bone loss on radiographs of the skulls and jaws. Periodontitis occurred frequently with increasing age, although the prevalence varied markedly among and within different breeds. Of the breeds most represented in the sample, periodontitis was most freque

The Kvaal method as a non-invasive method for age estimation based on the changes of pulpal size caused by secondary dentin deposition has been applied to different ethnics. However, its results are often conflicting and its accuracy is relatively poor. This study aimed to verify the applicability of the Kvaal method to estimate the ages of the Chinese population using digital panoramic radiographs and to formulate specific regression equations for use in Chinese subjects. A sample of 360 digital panoramic radiographs from northern Chinese population were selected, from which the pulpal size a

This case report describes the successful treatment of an adult with lip protrusion and a previously traumatized maxillary central incisor that had experienced replacement root resorption. An extracted premolar was transplanted into the incisor space and retracted orthodontically. Autotransplantation was successful with complete root formation and, combined with orthodontic treatment, provided a satisfying esthetic outcome.

PURPOSE: Coronectomy is performed when contact between the mandibular third molar apex and the inferior alveolar nerve is suspected. The efficacy of coronectomy compared with conventional tooth extraction has been recognized in recent years. However, few studies have reported the postoperative prognosis of roots remaining in the bone or surrounding tissue. Therefore, a clinical evaluation was performed with dental computed tomographic imaging of the coronectomy sites 1 year after the procedure.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This study investigated 101 patients (116 teeth) who underwent a coronectomy

INTRODUCTION: Endodontists face various challenges, and some factors are associated with endodontic treatment failure, such as the presence of resistant microorganisms resulting from inefficient disinfection and nonadhesive coronary sealing. The quality of the execution of the operative protocols, cautious irrigation, and the presence of a hermetic seal from the crown to the apex lead to successful endodontic retreatment.
METHODS: This descriptive cross-sectional study approached a female patient, aged 30 years. The data obtained from the literature were collected from PubMed, SciELO, and Goo

AIM: To study the role of sclerostin in periodontal ligament (PDL) as a homeostatic regulator in biophysical-force-induced tooth movement (BFTM).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: BFTM was performed in rats, followed by microarray, immunofluorescence, in situ hybridization, and real-time polymerase chain reaction for the detection and identification of the molecules. The periodontal space was analysed via micro-computed tomography. Effects on osteoclastogenesis and bone resorption were evaluated in the bone-marrow-derived cells in mice. In vitro human PDL cells were subjected to biophysical forces.

Computed tomography (CT) of the nasolacrimal drainage system with and without contrast medium (barium sulfate) was used to create an anatomic basis for clinical evaluation in domestic cats. To evaluate and compare the anatomical findings, three casts were carried out and were followed by CT examinations. These CT series were also used for a three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of the nasolacrimal drainage system within surrounding structures. In noncontrast CT images, osseous structures limiting the nasolacrimal drainage system are easily recognizable. In most cats, this allows the identifica

A prospective study of 140 intruded permanent teeth was done to evaluate the following healing complications: pulp necrosis (PN), root resorption (surface, inflammatory and replacement resorption) (RR) and defects in marginal periodontal healing (MA). These complications were related to various preinjury and injury factors. Age appeared to be related to all three healing complications in that patients younger than 12 years had the lowest complication rate. Stage of root formation at the time of the injury was very strongly related to PN and MA, with immature root formation (i.e. incomplete roo

AIM: Digital volume tomography is presented here as an alternative to routine computerized tomography in the diagnosis and treatment planning of impacted teeth.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A sample of 20 patients with a variety of types of tooth impaction was investigated and five representative cases are described. The potential disadvantages of digital volume tomography--inferior spatial resolution of subtle structures and limited representation of soft tissues--were of no clinical significance in the presented cases of impacted teeth. The method provides 3-dimensional images closely akin to regu

Dens invaginatus is a morphological abnormality of the tooth in which the coronal tooth enamel and dentin fold inwards towards the pulp cavity. Dens invaginatus type III (Oehlers: 1957) is characterized by infolding of the enamel and dentin as far as the root apex. This report describes a case of surgical and non-surgical endodontic therapy for a maxillary lateral incisor with type III dens invaginatus, necrotic pulp, and an associated large periradicular lesion. The patient was a 16-year-old man. Periapical radiographs suggested the presence of an untreated area of invagination. Cone beam com
