Oral Health Status and Multiple Sclerosis: Classic and Non-Classic Manifestations-Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disease of the central nervous system with neurological and motor symptoms that affect the orofacial region. The aim of this work is to present a patient that lacks the three classic orofacial manifestations but has other less common clinical alterations. CASE PRESENTATION: A 49-year-old female patient diagnosed with long-term relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis visited the dentist complaining of mild but persistent orofacial pain including the temporomandibular joint and pain not specific to any tooth. She presented mucosal irritation, xeros

Bilateral anterior elevation prosthesis boosts chondrocytes proliferation in mice mandibular condyle.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to develop a mouse model predominating in a proliferative response in the articular cartilage of the temporomandibular joints. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Bilateral anterior elevation of occlusion was developed by installing metal tubes onto the incisors of mice with edge-to-edge relation to prevent tooth wear, leading to an increase in the vertical height of the dental occlusion with time. Morphological changes and expression changes in Cyclin D1, Aggrecan, and type II and type X collagen in the mandibular condylar cartilage were detected. In addition, cells were isolated from…

Gingival overgrowth in partially edentulous ridges in an elderly female patient with epilepsy: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Drug-influenced gingival overgrowth is an unaesthetic overgrowth of gingiva principally associated with intake of drugs like phenytoin, cyclosporin A and nifedipine. Its occurrence in both dentate and edentulous regions of oral cavity is poorly understood. OBJECTIVES: This report highlights clinical and histological description, aetiology and management of gingival overgrowth in a partially edentulous (non-denture wearer) 60-year-old female patient with epilepsy on phenytoin and phenobarbital drugs from past 7 years. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patient's intraoral examination revealed

Dens evaginatus: literature review, pathophysiology, and comprehensive treatment regimen.

Dens evaginatus (DE) is an uncommon dental anomaly, having been well documented since 1925. It occurs primarily in people of Asian descent and is exhibited by protrusion of a tubercle from occlusal surfaces of posterior teeth, and lingual surfaces of anterior teeth. Tubercles have an enamel layer covering a dentin core containing a thin extension of pulp. These cusp-like protrusions are susceptible to pulp exposure from wear or fracture because of malocclusion, leading to pulpal complications soon after eruption. Endodontic intervention of permanent teeth with immature roots is unpredic for in

Inadvertent tooth movement with fixed lingual retainers.

Fixed retainers are effective in maintaining the alignment of the anterior teeth more than 90% of the time, but they can produce inadvertent tooth movement that in the most severe instances requires orthodontic retreatment managed with a periodontist. This is different from relapse into crowding when a fixed retainer is lost. These problems arise when the retainer breaks but remains bonded to some or all teeth, or when an intact retainer is distorted by function or was not passive when bonded. In both instances, torque of the affected teeth is the predominant outcome. A fixed retainer made wit

Oral Health in Individuals After Bariatric Surgery: A Systematic Scoping Review.

This scoping review appraises the available literature that investigates oral health after bariatric surgery (BS). Forty-two records were included (33 original studies and 9 systematic reviews). Bariatric surgery had a negative impact on the oral health related quality of life (three out of six studies). Relatively few studies found improvement following BS, probing pocket depth (2/10), clinical attachment level (1/9), bleeding on probing (3/10) and plaque (3/8). Conversely, BS was negatively associated with the DMFT (4/6), tooth wear (4/6) and oral radiographic findings (1/1). There was confl…

Chronic rhinitis and dental disease.

Whenever an animal is examined because of chronic rhinitis, the dentition should be carefully examined to rule out the possibility of a primary dental problem. Oral examination under heavy sedation or general anesthesia is necessary to diagnose many of these cases. A periodontal probe is used in detecting deep periodontal pockets that extend into the nasal cavity or maxillary sinus. A dental explorer is used to reveal pulpal exposure secondary to dental fractures or rapid dental wear or attrition. Careful oral examination is used to localize any oronasal or oroantral fistula from a previously

The influence of dental loupes on the quality of adhesive removal in orthodontic debonding.

OBJECTIVE: Bracket bonding has been a major advance in orthodontic treatment. However, the method of debonding can lead to diverse problems such as enamel fractures, enamel loss and enamel scratching. In this clinical investigation we aimed to evaluate the influence of wearing dental loupes on enamel damage during the debonding procedure. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 22 consecutive patients were randomly assigned in a split-mouth study to evaluate adhesive removal with and without the use of dental loupes (2.5×, LED headlight). Tooth replicas in epoxy resin were made from silicone impressions. Elect

Associations between tooth loss, denture use, and dementia in older Taiwanese adults.

BACKGROUND: The literature has mainly focused on the association between tooth loss and dementia, and evidence regarding the separate and joint effects of tooth loss and denture use on the risk of dementia is limited. This study investigated the links among tooth loss, denture use, and dementia risk in Taiwanese adults aged 65 years or older. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study utilized data from the 2009 National Health Interview Survey and 2008-2017 National Health Insurance claim records, including the records of 2247 individuals free from dementia treatment in 2008-2009. Dementia dia

GABA and glutamate levels in occlusal splint-wearing males with possible bruxism.

OBJECTIVE: The inhibitory neurotransmitter γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) plays an important role in the pathophysiology of anxiety behavioural disorders such as panic disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder and is also implicated in the manifestation of tooth-grinding and clenching behaviours generally known as bruxism. In order to test whether the stress-related behaviours of tooth-grinding and clenching share similar underlying mechanisms involving GABA and other metabolites as do anxiety-related behavioural disorders, we performed a Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (MRS) study for accurate,

Mechanical Resistance in Decapod Claw Denticles: Contribution of Structure and Composition.

The decapod crustacean exoskeleton is a multi-layered structure composed of chitin-protein fibers embedded with calcium salts. Decapod claws display tooth-like denticles, which come into direct contact with predators and prey. They are subjected to more regular and intense mechanical stress than other parts of the exoskeleton and therefore must be especially resistant to wear and abrasion. Here, we characterized denticle properties in five decapod species. Dactyls from three brachyuran crabs (Cancer borealis, Callinectes sapidus, and Chionoecetes opilio) and two anomuran crabs (Paralomis birst
