Coronally advanced flap procedure for root coverage. Treatment of root surface: root planning versus polishing.

This clinical study was designed to determine if mechanical instrumentation (root planing) of the exposed root is useful in treating gingival recession caused by traumatic toothbrushing following a coronally advanced flap (CAF). Ten patients with high levels of oral hygiene (full-mouth plaque score <20%), from 25 to 57 years of age, were selected for the study. Each patient showed 2 bilateral Class I or II maxillary recessions. A total of 20 recessions were treated. The difference in the recessions was < or =1 mm. In each patient, one recession was randomly assigned to the test group and the c…

Bacterial composition of subgingival plaque in crowded and noncrowded teeth.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with dental crowding, even with good oral hygiene, may show increased bacterial presence in the crowded area. This study aimed to determine the microbial composition of subgingival plaque in crowded and noncrowded dental regions. METHODS: Forty dental students with anterior dental crowding, who were aware of correct brushing techniques and oral hygiene, were enrolled in this study. After orthodontic records were taken and the periodontal examination was performed, subgingival plaque samples were collected from the crowded (experimental) and noncrowded regions (control)

Optimal tooth brushing initiation age and frequency for preventing early childhood caries: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Early childhood caries (ECC) is a prevalent global public health concern. Although daily tooth brushing is a key preventive measure, uncertainty remains regarding the ideal age to initiate tooth brushing and the optimal brushing frequency to minimise ECC risk in preschool children. A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted to explore the association between tooth brushing practices (initiation age and frequency) and the early childhood caries among children under 6 years of age. METHODS: We searched three databases (Proquest, Web of Science, and Scopus) for observationa

Effect of coffee staining and simulated oral hygiene methods on the color and translucency of a nanoceramic resin.

OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the color and translucency of a nanoceramic resin subjected to hygiene practices and immersion in coffee over time. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Specimens (n = 80, HT and LT, 0.5-mm thick) of a nanoceramic resin were obtained and were divided in groups according to the simulated oral hygiene: no intervention (NT), brushing with an electric brush and water (BN), brushing with an electric brush and toothpaste for 10 s (BT), and immersion in mouthwash for 30 s (MW). Oral hygiene practices were repeated after staining in coffee solution for 15, 48, 336, 1440, 8640, and 35,040 min. S

Prevalence and predictive factors of dentin hypersensitivity in Brazilian adolescents.

AIM: To measure the prevalence of dentin hypersensitivity (DH) in adolescents. METHODS: The diagnosis was based on self-report and was confirmed by tactile and evaporative tests. The association between DH and predictor factors was determined using a multivariate model. The sample consisted of 384 adolescents. RESULTS: The prevalence was 19.0%. DH prevalence to tactile stimulus was higher in those participants whose toothbrush movement was vertical/horizontal (OR = 0.53, 95% CI = 0.47-0.60, p < 0.001), in the presence of dental biofilm (OR = 2.45, 95% CI = 1.94-3.09, p < 0.001), of non-cario

[Halitosis. A common problem].

Halitosis is a frequently occurring problem, the cause of which is generally to be found in the mouth. The challenge for oral health care providers is to diagnose it correctly and treat it effectively. Differential diagnosis is of great importance in making a distinction between halitosis which originates in the mouth and which does not originate in the mouth. Oral halitosis can be treated effectively by good oral health care. Plaque accumulation on the tongue is the most common cause of oral halitosis. Tongue cleansing, possibly in combination with a specific mouth wash, is consequently recom

The "chewing wheel" device: plaque-removing efficiency and use in oral hygiene programs.

Control of bacterial plaque on tooth surfaces is the most important method of controlling dental disease. The patient's ability to achieve good plaque control is of utmost importance in preventing the occurrence of periodontal disease and in maintaining periodontal health. The search for better methods that enable easier and more effective plaque control has led to the development of the "chewing wheel." A clinical trial was conducted to compare the plaque-removing efficiency of the chewing wheel to that of a manual toothbrush. The tested device removed 18% to 37% of the accumulated dental dep

Impact of home-based professional dental cleaning on oral health and oral health-related quality of life in care-dependent older adults - a randomized controlled trial.

Objective: The trial aimed to study the additive effect of domiciliary professional dental cleaning on root caries lesions (RCLs), oral hygi … o care-dependent older adults does not seem to have any additive preventing effect on RCLs to daily toothbrushing with high-fluoride toothpaste. This suggests that focus be maintaining good daily oral health routines rather than home-care visits to maintain oral health.

High and low brushing force in relation to efficacy and gingival abrasion.

OBJECTIVES: Does a high brushing force induce more gingival abrasion than a low (regular) brushing force? Furthermore, what is the effect of a low or high force on the efficacy? METHODS: Thirty-five non-dental students were selected. All received an appointment prior to which they abstained from oral hygiene for at least 48 h. At baseline the teeth and surrounding tissues were disclosed using Mira-2-Tone disclosing solution. Next, the examiner (PAV) evaluated the number of sites with gingival abrasion and the amount of dental plaque (Quigley & Hein) at 6 surfaces of each tooth. In the absence

Efficacy of chewing gum in preventing extrinsic tooth staining.

The purpose of this six-week clinical study was to determine the efficacy of sugar-free chewing gum versus no chewing on preventing Peridex (0.12% chlorhexidine)-associated stain. One-hundred and fifty healthy adult subjects, categorized by tea or coffee intake and smoking, were randomly assigned to a chewing or no chewing gum group. All subjects were given Peridex and an ADA-approved toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste to use twice a day. Gum was chewed for 20 minutes five times each day, after toothbrushing and Peridex rinse in the morning and evening, and after each meal. At baseline, all su…

An 18-week home-use study comparing the oral hygiene and gingival health benefits of triclosan and fluoride toothpastes.

Several triclosan and stannous fluoride toothpastes have been shown to have plaque inhibitory and more particularly gingival health benefits … e examination, and this improvement continued throughout the trial. This is a feature of nearly all toothbrushing studies and can be attributed to the initial prophylaxis and the Hawthorne phenomenon. Such phenomena, noted in home use clinical trials, may mask the efficacy of proven antiplaque formulations.

Gingival recession: a cross-sectional clinical investigation.

In this cross-sectional study, risk and potentially causative factors of gingival recession were examined and their relationship to apical migration of the gingival margin evaluated. Thirty eight patients (18-60 years), displaying one or more sites with gingival recession but without any significant periodontal disease participated. A total of 28 parameters were evaluated in both 'test' teeth (50 teeth with gingival recession) and 'control' teeth (50 contralateral teeth). The results revealed that gingival margin recession was associated with both high inflammatory and plaque scores, with decr

Deep learning models for the detection of dental-findings and tooth-types using video data.

BACKGROUND: Oral diseases have an estimated incidence of 35.5% worldwide, yet access to dental care is often hindered by a shortage of dental professionals and limited diagnostic resources. While Artificial Intelligence (AI) has shown promise in dental diagnostics, most existing models rely on high-quality static images captured in controlled clinical settings. This study aimed to develop and validate Deep Learning (DL) models capable of detecting dental findings and identifying tooth types using video data from a handheld, toothbrush-mounted intraoral device. METHODS: In this validation stud
