DNA adducts and oxidative DNA damage induced by organic extracts from PM2.5 in an acellular assay.

The genotoxic activities of complex mixtures of organic extracts from the urban air particles collected in various localities of the Czech Republic, which differed in the extent and sources of air pollution, were compared. For this purpose, PM2.5 particles were collected by high volume samplers in the most polluted area of the Czech Republic--Ostrava region (localities Bartovice, Poruba and Karvina) and in the locality exhibiting a low level of air pollution--Trebon--a small town in the non-industrial region of Southern Bohemia. To prepare extractable organic matter (EOM), PM2.5 particles were

Prenatal exposure to air pollution and maternal and fetal thyroid function: a systematic review of the epidemiological evidence.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to ambient air pollution is a top risk factor contributing to the global burden of disease. Pregnant persons and their developing fetuses are particularly susceptible to adverse health outcomes associated with air pollution exposures. During pregnancy, the thyroid plays a critical role in fetal development, producing thyroid hormones that are associated with brain development. Our objective is to systematically review recent literature that investigates how prenatal exposure to air pollution affects maternal and fetal thyroid function. METHODS: Following the Navigation Gu

Differences in socio-demographic and environmental exposures at home vs. school in the ECHO cohort.

BACKGROUND: Social and environmental exposures, typically characterized at residential locations, are linked to adverse respiratory outcomes in children; yet, children spend a significant amount of time in school. Little is known about how socio-demographic and environmental exposures vary between home and school settings. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to compare home and school exposures and to assess whether these differences were consistent across cities and varied by home-school distance. METHODS: Home and school addresses were geocoded for 6-13 year olds (n = 923) from t

Environmental exposure and respiratory health in industrial gulf coast communities: a mixed-method study.

BACKGROUND: Industrialized communities along the U.S. Gulf Coast face persistent respiratory health inequities that are shaped by cumulative environmental exposures and social vulnerability. This study examined how residential proximity to multiple pollution sources interacts with sociodemographic and behavioral factors to influence respiratory outcomes in two industrial cities in Southeast Texas. METHODS: A cross-sectional mixed methods design integrated survey data from 2,965 adult residents with 13 qualitative interviews. Multivariable logistic regression models estimated associations betwe

Where to locate transit stops: Cross-intersection profiles of ultrafine particles and implications for pedestrian exposure.

Epidemiological studies have shown that exposure to traffic-related pollutants increases incidence of adverse health outcomes. Transit users in cities across the globe commonly spend 15-45 min or more waiting at transit stops each day, often at locations with high levels of pollution from traffic. Here, we investigate the characteristics of concentration profiles of ultrafine particles (UFP) with 5 m spatial resolution across intersections, to determine the best place to site transit stops to minimize exposures. Cross-intersection UFP profiles were derived from 1744 profiles covering 90 m befo

Linking health risks, pollution indices, and contamination sources in urban soils of Central Serbia.

Serbia represents a valuable setting for improving soil pollution monitoring, particularly in urban environments facing regulatory and infrastructural constraints. In a country with some of the highest cancer incidence and mortality rates in Europe, persistent soil contamination poses a critical environmental and public health concern. This study provides an integrated assessment of radiological and chemical health risks in the soils of one of Serbia's largest cities, impacted by intensive industrial activities and war-related damage. Activity concentrations of radionuclides and metal contents

Attitudes towards air quality during outdoor exercise amongst habitual exercisers.

The effects of air pollution on health outcomes are well-established. However, little is known about perceptions of air pollution and how it may influence exercise behaviours. The aim of this study was to understand the perceived importance of air pollution during planned exercise, and where relevant, explore how those perceptions may differ between those living in different locations. A questionnaire was disseminated to several running and cycling clubs in the United Kingdom, covering population characteristics to determine urban, rural or coastal residents and exercisers, self-reported asthm

Assessing the intra-urban variability of nitrogen oxides and ozone across a highly heterogeneous urban area.

High-resolution air quality maps are critical towards assessing and understanding exposures to elevated air pollution in dense urban areas. However, these surfaces are rarely available in low- and middle-income countries that suffer from some of the highest air pollution levels worldwide. In this study, we make use of land use regressions (LURs) to generate annual and seasonal, high-resolution nitrogen dioxide (NO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and ozone (O3) exposure surfaces for the Greater Beirut Area (GBA) in Lebanon. NO2, NOx and O3 concentrations were monitored using passive samplers that wer

A study of the combined effects of physical activity and air pollution on mortality in elderly urban residents: the Danish Diet, Cancer, and Health Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Physical activity reduces, whereas exposure to air pollution increases, the risk of premature mortality. Physical activity amplifies respiratory uptake and deposition of air pollutants in the lung, which may augment acute harmful effects of air pollution during exercise. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to examine whether benefits of physical activity on mortality are moderated by long-term exposure to high air pollution levels in an urban setting. METHODS: A total of 52,061 subjects (50-65 years of age) from the Danish Diet, Cancer, and Health cohort, living in Aarhus and Copenhagen, report

Comparisons of personal exposure to PM2.5 and CO by different commuting modes in Beijing, China.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies have shown that commuting in traffic is associated with adverse health effects. It is vital to investigate commuters' exposure to traffic-related air pollutants before considering potential health risks. However, there are relatively few publications considering commuters' personal exposure in China. METHOD: We carried out a field investigation measuring commuters' personal exposure to particulate matter ≤2.5 μm in aerodynamic diameter (PM(2.5)) and carbon monoxide (CO) by three commuting modes in Beijing. Both PM(2.5) and CO personal concentrations and who

How to use efficiently airborne criteria pollutants and radon-222 in source apportionment: A self-organizing maps approach.

Pollutant source apportionment represents one of the fundamental activities in environmental science. Several efficient chemometric tools are available to the scope, mostly based on multivariate techniques and usually applied to aerosol chemical speciation data. In the present work, an alternative source profiling method is proposed, based on the self-organizing maps (SOM) algorithm. Moreover, the dataset used includes typical criteria pollutants and physical parameters related to airborne particulate matter widely used as a complement of aerosol source apportionment and largely available at a

No exercise-induced increase in serum BDNF after cycling near a major traffic road.

Commuting by bike has a clear health enhancing effect. Moreover, regular exercise is known to improve brain plasticity, which results in enhanced cognition and memory performance. Animal research has clearly shown that exercise upregulates brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF - a neurotrophine) enhancing brain plasticity. Studies in humans found an increase in serum BDNF concentration in response to an acute exercise bout. Recently, more evidence is emerging suggesting that exposure to air pollution (such as particulate matter (PM)) is higher in commuter cyclists compared to car drivers. Fu

Weather and the City: Machine Learning for Predicting and Attributing Fine Scale Air Quality to Meteorological and Urban Determinants.

Urban air quality persists as a global concern, with critical health implications. This study employs a combination of machine learning (gradient boosting regression, GBR) and spatial analysis to better understand the key drivers behind air pollution and its prediction and mitigation strategies. Focusing on New York City as a representative urban area, we investigate the interplay between urban characteristics and weather factors, showing that urban features, including traffic-related parameters and urban morphology, emerge as crucial predictors for pollutants closely associated with vehicular

Fluctuation analysis-based risk assessment for respiratory virus activity and air pollution associated asthma incidence.

Asthma is a growing epidemic worldwide. Exacerbations of asthma have been associated with bacterial and viral respiratory tract infections and air pollution. We correlated the asthma admission rates with fluctuations in respiratory virus activity and traffic-related air pollution, namely particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter ≤ 10 μm (PM₁₀), nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), carbon monoxide (CO), sulfur dioxide (SO₂), and ozone (O₃). A probabilistic risk assessment framework was developed based on a detrended fluctuation analysis to predict future respiratory virus and air pollutant associated

Road tunnel noise: monitoring, prediction and evaluation of noise-induced hearing loss.

Incessant increases in vehicles and massive road networks lead to traffic-related problems and noise pollution. Road tunnels are considered a more feasible and effective solution for solving traffic problems. Compared to other traffic noise abatement strategies, road tunnels also offer enormous benefits to urban mass transit systems. However, the road tunnels that are non-complying with the design and safety standards negatively impact commuters' health of being exposed to the high noise level inside the tunnel, particularly for road tunnels above 500 m in length. The study aims to evaluate th

Impact of Indoor Air Pollution on Occupational Exposure: Rethinking the Major Health Threat for Airport Workers.

(1) Background: Airports workers are exposed to a mixture of airborne pollutants generated by aircraft operations, ground support equipment, road traffic, and indoor microenvironments. Indoor air quality, influenced by outdoor pollutant and ventilation dynamics, represents an important, but overlooked determinant of occupational exposure. Fine and ultrafine particulate matter (PM) can induce oxidative stress, inflammation, and xenobiotic responses, affecting not only the respiratory system, but also other organs. (2) Methods: This review examines the health effects of occupational exposure amo

Ecology of the cardiovascular system: Part II - A focus on non-air related pollutants.

An integrated exposomic view of the relation between environment and cardiovascular health should consider the effects of both air and non-air related environmental stressors. Cardiovascular impacts of ambient air temperature, indoor and outdoor air pollution were recently reviewed. We aim, in this second part, to address the cardiovascular effects of noise, food pollutants, radiation, and some other emerging environmental factors. Road traffic noise exposure is associated with increased risk of premature arteriosclerosis, coronary artery disease, and stroke. Numerous studies report an increas

Contribution of ozone to airborne aldehyde formation in Paris homes.

Indoor aldehydes may result from ozone-initiated chemistry, mainly documented by experimental studies. As part of an environmental investigation included in the PARIS birth cohort, the aim of this study was to examine ozone contribution to airborne aldehyde formation in Paris homes. Formaldehyde, acetaldehyde and hexaldehyde levels, as well as styrene, nitrogen dioxide and nicotine concentrations, comfort parameters and carbon dioxide levels, were measured twice during the first year of life of the babies. Ambient ozone concentrations were collected from the closest background station of the r

Effects of air pollution on mitochondrial function, mitochondrial DNA methylation, and mitochondrial peptide expression.

Mitochondrial DNA is sensitive to damage by exogenous reactive oxygen sources, including traffic-related air pollution (TRAP). Given the important role for mitochondria in human disease, we hypothesized that prenatal air pollution exposure may be associated with mitochondrial dysfunction and that mitochondrial-derived peptides (MDPs) might protect against these effects. In in vitro studies, 24-hour exposure to nanoparticulate matter (nPM) increased oxidation of mtDNA, decreased mitochondrial consumption rate (OCR), and decreased mtDNAcn in SH-SY5Y cells. Addition of MDPs rescued these effects
