Infection of the Jackal (Canis aureus) by Haplorchis taichui (Trematoda: Heterophyidae) in Southwestern Iran: A Clue for Potential Human Infection.

BACKGROUND: We detected eight trematodes in the small intestine of a road-killed jackal (Canis aureus) from Hamidiyeh District near the city … Vietnam. CONCLUSION: Further studies with the application of reliable molecular tools to diagnose trematode infections in wildlife and humans can bring more insight into the epidemiology of fish-borne flukes including H. taichui in this area.

Rectal carcinoma arising in a patient with intestinal and hepatic schistosomiasis due to Schistosoma mekongi.

Schistosomiasis is a parasitic trematode infection spread by snails with multiple species causing human disease. Infection can cause liver disease, including fibrosis and portal hypertension, and has been linked to malignancies such as bladder and colorectal cancer. We describe a case of Schistosoma mekongi, a geographically limited form of schistosomiasis, in a Laotian immigrant who presented with both hepatic fibrosis and rectal cancer, with numerous schistosome eggs present in the patient's rectal resection. We believe this case is the first report of a rectal carcinoma arising in the setti

Nasitrema attenuata (Trematoda) infection of Tursiops truncatus and its potentialities as an aetiological agent of chronic pulmonary lesions.

Two cases of Nasitrema sp (Trematoda) infection of the bottlenosed dolphin, Tursiops truncatus, are reported and N. attenuata is briefly redescribed. The adults of the trematode occurring in the nasal sinuses and posterior nasal passage of the dolphins are considered as practically harmless for the host but thier eggs, aspirated deep into the bronchial tree, may initiate a foreign-body of inflammatory reaction in the lungs and continuous aspiration of such eggs may provoke a chronic pneumonia condition.

Elucidation of the life cycle of Galactosomum nagasakiense (Heterophyidae), the causative parasite of trematode whirling disease in marine fish, with discovery of congeneric species in the gastropod first intermediate host Cerithium dialeucum.

Trematode whirling disease (TWD), caused by Galactosomum nagasakiense (Heterophyidae), affects a wide range of wild and cultured marine fish … region of TWD, aiming to identify the gastropod first intermediate host. Among 1341 snails sampled, trematode infections were detected in 15 individuals of the cerithiid snail, Cerithium dialeucum (n = 798, prevalence = 1.9 %). Three morphologically distinct types of magnacercous cercariae were isolated from C. dialeucum, and molecular analysis confirmed that all type …

Thoracic manifestations of tropical parasitic infections: a pictorial review.

Parasitic infections are distributed worldwide and affect hundreds of millions of individuals-primarily those living in endemic areas or in regions with a high rate of immigration from endemic areas-causing significant morbidity and mortality. A broad spectrum of parasitic infections (eg, amebiasis, malaria, trypanosomiasis, ascariasis, strongyloidiasis, dirofilariasis, cystic echinococcosis, schistosomiasis, paragonimiasis) frequently affect the lungs, mediastinum, and thoracic wall, manifesting with abnormal imaging findings that often make diagnosis challenging. Although most of these infec

Spirorchidiasis and fibropapillomatosis in green turtles from the Hawaiian Islands.

Pathologic examination of green turtles (Chelonia mydas) from the Hawaiian Islands (USA) was performed to determine the primary cause of mortality. Lesions were associated with fibropapillomatosis (FP) and/or spirorchidiasis (SP) in 16 of 17 green turtles examined. Gross lesions included moderate to severe emaciation, lobulated fibropapillomas of different size classes, serous atrophy of fat, and edema of subcutaneous tissue and muscle. Anasarca, hydropericardium and pulmonary edema were common findings. The neoplastic lesions observed in the gastrointestinal tract, lungs, liver, and kidneys o

Non-resident definitive host presence is sufficient to sustain avian schistosome populations.

To control swimmer's itch in northern Michigan inland lakes, USA, one species of bird, the common merganser (Mergus merganser), has been relocated from several lakes since 2015. Relocation efforts are driven by a desire to reduce the prevalence of the swimmer's itch-causing parasite Trichobilharzia stagnicolae. The intention of this state-sponsored control effort was to interrupt the life cycle of T. stagnicolae and reduce parasite egg contribution into the environment from summer resident mergansers such that infections of the intermediate snail host Stagnicola emarginata declined. Reduced sn

First Record of Clinostomum sp. (Digenea: Clinostomidae) in Danio rerio (Actinopterygii: Cyprinidae) and the Implication of Using Zebrafish from Pet Stores on Research.

Many scientific studies still use zebrafish from pet stores as animal models, even cutting-edge researches. However, these animals differ genotypically and phenotypically between them. The importance of the use of standardized models is widely recognized. Besides that, another consequence of using zebrafish from unknown origins is the acquisition of parasitized animals. This study aimed to relate the infection by Clinostomum sp. in zebrafish. Animals sold as "high standard" were acquired from a commercial company. Swimming alterations and superficial yellow dots were observed in five zebrafish

Gastropod first intermediate hosts for two species of Monorchiidae Odhner, 1911 (Trematoda): I can't believe it's not bivalves!

The trematode superfamily Monorchioidea comprises three families of teleost parasites: the Monorchiidae Odhner, 1911, Lissorchiidae Magath, 1917, and Deropristidae Cable & Hunninen, 1942. All presently known lissorchiid and deropristid life cycles have gastropods as first intermediate hosts, whereas those of monorchiids involve bivalves. Here, we report an unexpected intermediate host for monorchiids; two species of Hurleytrematoides Yamaguti, 1954 use gastropods as first intermediate hosts. Sporocysts and cercariae were found infecting two species of the family Vermetidae, highly specialised

The first record of Centrocestus formosanus (Trematoda: Heterophyidae) in southern Brazil supported by molecular data.

Centrocestus formosanus is a digenean parasite first described from Asia, which parasitizes Melanoides tuberculata (Gastropoda: Thiaridae) at the first intermediate stage, and different fish species as second intermediate host. C. formosanus was previously recorded in Brazilian states, but never before in the southern region of this country. Recording and identification of digenean species through morphological identification is a taxonomic challenge. In light of this, we use an integrative taxonomic approach to report the occurrence of cercariae and metacercariae of C. formosanus in molluscs

Description of Gyrodactylus banmae n. sp. (Monogenea, Gyrodactylidae) parasitic on zebrafish, Danio rerio.

A new species of Gyrodactylus was described on the body surface of zebrafish (Danio rerio) in China. Basing on morphological characteristics and ITS sequence, we identified the parasite as a new member of the Gyrodactylus-wageneri group. Morphologically, Gyrodactylus sp. nov. is greatly similar to "G. zebrae", another species parasitic on zebrafish: both have moderately stout hamulus, marginal hook sickle with a prominent heel and toe, as well as a curved blade. However, distinct haptoral shape differences were detected between these two species. The dorsal bar is straight in Gyrodactylus sp.

Rumen fluke, Fischoederius elongatus (Trematoda: Gastrothylacidae): Preliminary investigation of suitable conditions for egg hatching.

Various temperatures may have different effects on the distribution of paramphistomes that cause amphistomosis in cattle, including Fischoederius elongatus. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effects of different temperature treatments on F. elongatus hatching, with specific identification using morphological, histological, and phylogenetic analysis. All specimens were collected from two buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) rumens in a slaughterhouse in Pathum Thani province, Thailand. F. elongatus adults were kept in phosphate buffered saline solution for egg collection. The egg specimens we

[Paramphistomidosis - an overview on epidemiology and clinical signs].

Paramphistosis is a globally occurring parasitic disease in various ruminants caused by a range of rumen flukes (including Paramphistomum cervi, Calicophoron daubneyi and Paramphistomum leydeni). In Europe, local occurrences of rumen fluke infection in domestic and wild ruminants have been described for decades. There is now evidence that paramphistomidosis is gaining in importance, because high prevalence rates were reported in the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Spain, Belgium and The Netherlands. Current prevalence data from Germany are lacking. In recent investigations in northern Germany

Influence of Himasthla elongata (Trematoda: Echinostomatidae) metacercariae on heart rate in blue mussels (Mytilus edulis).

Whether metacercariae of the digenean Himasthla elongata (Himasthlidae) are harmful to their secondary intermediate hosts, the blue mussel, Mytilus edulis, is a disputable question. To shed light on this issue, we performed field monitoring of the heart rate (HR) in mussels infected with H. elongata over a period of 1.5 years. We observed a significant rise in HR in infected mussels, but only 1 year after infection and at temperatures of 15-17 °C. HR variance also grew sharply in infected mussels within the same temperature range. We also detected a decreased ability of infected mussels to com
