MCMI-II personality scale scores among women with anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa.

Issues of personality psychopathology among women who experience eating disorders are of interest to both researchers and clinicians. The MCMI-II (Millon, 1987) may be a useful instrument for use with this population as it measures 13 categories of personality psychopathology. It is surprising to note that no report of MCMI-II scores among women with eating disorders has been published. In this study, adult women with anorexia nervosa, restricting type (n = 27) or binge-eating/purging type (n = 33), or bulimia nervosa, purging type (n = 105), completed the MCMI-II at initial assessment. A bright side, facet analysis of histrionic personality disorder: the relationship between the HDS Colourful factor and the NEO-PI-R facets in a large adult sample.

This study looks at "bright-side," Big Five Personality trait correlates of a "dark-side" Personality Disorder, namely Histrionic Personality Disorder (HPD). More than 5000 British adults completed the Neuroticism Extraversion Openness Personality Inventory-Revised (Costa & McCrae, 1985), which measures the Big Five Personality factors at the Domain (Super Factor) and the Facet (Factor) level, as well as the Hogan Development Survey (HDS; Hogan & Hogan, 2009), which has a measure of HPD, exclusively called "Colourful" in the HDS terminology. Correlation and regression results confirmed many of

Borderline personality symptomatology as a mediator of the link between child maltreatment and adult suicide potential.

UNLABELLED: The present study tests borderline personality symptoms as meditational pathways between child maltreatment and suicide potential among college students. A sample of 268 participants completed a questionnaire battery including demographic data, the Comprehensive Child Maltreatment Scale, Inventory of Altered Self-Capacities, and Personality Assessment Inventory. RESULTS: Three multiple mediation models (1 for each type of child maltreatment) were conducted. Results demonstrated that the same set of borderline personality characteristics mediated the relations between each type of

Association between personality traits and psychological distress among postmenopausal women with coronary heart disease: A cross-sectional survey and mediation analysis.

Postmenopausal women with negative personality characteristics are at an increased risk of psychological disorders, yet little is known about the mechanism underlying the relationship between type D personality and psychological distress in postmenopausal women with coronary disease. This study assessed the mediating roles of perceived social support and self-perceived burden in the relationship between type D and psychological distress based on the equity theory and stress-buffering model. Demographic characteristics, type D, psychological distress, perceived social support, and self-perceive

The validity of the Type D construct and its assessment in Taiwan.

BACKGROUND: Type D (distressed) personality, defined by negative affectivity and social inhibition, is related to cardiovascular outcomes. Little is known about Type D in non-Western cultures. We examined the validity of this construct and its assessment in Taiwanese patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) and adults from the general population. METHODS: CAD patients (N = 87) and adults from the general population (N = 421) completed the 14-item Type D Scale- Taiwanese version (DS14-T), State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, Beck Depression Inventory-II, and Chinese Hostility Inventory Short-Form

Personality disorder comorbidity with major depression and response to treatment with sertraline or citalopram.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the frequency of DSM-III-R personality disorders in depressed patients treated in primary care, and to examine the effect of sertraline or citalopram on the diagnosis of personality disorders. A total of 308 patients with a major depressive disorder were assessed with the Swedish version of the Structured Clinical Interview for Personality Disorders (SCID) screen questionnaire, before and after 24 weeks double-blind treatment with sertraline (50-150 mg/day) or citalopram (20-60 mg/day). Following treatment, significant reductions in the frequency of

Patient-reported outcome measures on mental health and psychosocial factors in patients with Brugada syndrome.

AIMS: Brugada syndrome (BrS) is a hereditary arrhythmic disease, associated with sudden cardiac death. To date, little is known about the psychosocial correlates and impacts associated with this disease. The aim of this study was to assess a set of patient-reported psychosocial outcomes, to better profile these patients, and to propose a tailored psychosocial care. METHODS AND RESULTS: Patients were recruited at the European reference Centre for BrS at Universitair Ziekenhuis Brussel, Belgium. Recruitment was undertaken in two phases: phase 1 (retrospective), patients with confirmed BrS, and

[The role of the personality in the feeding behavior disorders].

Personality disorders are common in eating disorders and preliminary reports indicate that this type of disorders implicate a poor prognosis in anorexia and bulimia nervosa. Cluster C personality disorders, particularly avoidant and dependent personality disorder are the most frequent in anorexia nervosa. In bulimia nervosa, however, cluster B personality disorders, including borderline and histrionic personality disorders, are more frequent. Furthermore, temperament could differentiate anorectic patients from bulimic patients. Eating disorders seem to be associated with high scores in neuroti

[Psychiatric disorders in juvenile myoclonic epilepsy].

Mild personality problems have been described in patients with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME), but clinical practice shows that JME can be diagnosed in patients with more or less severe psychiatric disorders (PD). The presence in JME patients of personality disorders has been described repeatedly, but never quantified. We thus decided to evaluate, using the DSM IV, the current prevalence and types of PD in a large series of consecutive, newly referred patients with JME. Among 170 consecutive JME cases referred to two departments of epileptology (Marseilles and Nice) between 1981 and 1998 (6

Group dynamics and therapy outcome of multimodal pain therapies: A prospective observational trial.

BACKGROUND: For the treatment of chronic pain, interdisciplinary treatment programs are recommended. Despite continuous adaptation and optimization of this cost- and time-intensive and comprehensive form of therapy, it is not successful in some patients. As personality disorders have an important influence on social interaction and behaviour, the aim of our study was to identify the possible impact of patients with personality disorders on group dynamics and to analyse the influence of group dynamics on individual therapy outcomes. METHODS: We conducted a prospective observational study in pa

Taking Heart: Cardiac Symptoms and Nightmares Differentiate Nightmare Proneness and Psychological Distress among Young Adults.

Introduction  Nightmare proneness, a trait-like disposition to experience frequent nightmares, has been strongly related to psychological distress. The aim of the present study was to examine if cardiac symptoms and hypothetically-related variables, nightmares, and perceived physical health could be used to differentiate nightmare proneness and psychological distress. Materials and Methods  In the present cross-sectional study, 254 young adults completed measures of nightmare proneness, psychological distress, cardiac symptoms, nonspecific and posttraumatic nightmares, nightmare distress, heal

Does personality explain social inequalities in mortality? The French GAZEL cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The 'indirect-selection' hypothesis proposes that some quality of the individual, a personality characteristic or intelligence, leads to both socioeconomic position (SEP) and health. We aim to quantify the contribution of personality measures to the associations between SEP and mortality. METHODS: Of the GAZEL cohort, 14 445 participants aged 39-54 years in 1993 and followed-up over 12.7 years, completed the Bortner-Type-A-scale, the Buss-Durkee-Hostility-Inventory and the Grossarth-Maticek and Eysenck-Personality-Stress-Inventory. Indicators of SEP, such as father's social class,

Development of an At-Risk Personality Profile for (In)Direct Self-Harm Engagement in Older Age.

Across the lifespan, suicide mortality rates are highest among older adults, yet research on self-harm in later life remains limited. This study explores how self-reported maladaptive personality traits (measured by the PID-5-BF+M) are associated with self-harm in older adults, and whether there are potential differences according to the type of self-harm behaviors (indirect, direct, and the co-occurrence of these two) in this age group. From a convenience sample of 790 adults aged 60 years and older, 102 participants were selected using a matched-pair design. Regression models showed that thr

Klinefelter syndrome in a military population. Electroencephalographic, endocrine, and psychiatric status.

In a study of nine Klinefelter syndrome patients obtained from a military population, all were found to have normal electroencephalograms (EEGs), all were clinically euthyroid, and had normal thyroid function test results. All had normal verbal and nonverbal IQs and no evidence of neurologic dysfunction on psychological testing. There was a high incidence of personality maladjustment as indicated by both the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality inventory and individual psychiatric evaluation. No particular personality pattern appeared typical for the group as a whole. Neurologic dysfunction, as m

Somatic and psychological features of headache in systemic lupus erythematosus.

OBJECTIVE: Headaches--especially of migrainous type--have been considered part of the disease spectrum of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). We wished to characterize prevalence and types of headaches in SLE and find out if headache is associated with disease, personality traits, or other psychological factors. METHODS: Fifty-eight consecutive Caucasian patients with SLE were given a clinical examination. We recorded SLE disease activity according to the SLE Disease Activity Index, types of headache according to International Headache Society criteria, and personality traits and emotional st

Individual differences in personality in laying hens are related to learning a colour cue association.

Personality can influence how animals perceive and learn cues. The behaviour and physiological responses animals show during stressful events is indicative of their personality. Acute induced stress prior to a cognitive test are known to affect the judgement of a stimulus, but personality of an individual could also affect learning of a specific cognitive paradigm. Here, we assessed if adult laying hens' behaviour and physiological responses, as indicators of their personality, were related to their cognitive performance. We assessed their behavioural responses to a tonic immobility test, an o

Organic personality disorder in dementia syndromes: an inventory approach.

Personality alterations were investigated in patients with dementia of the Alzheimer type (DAT), multi-infarct dementia (MID), and normal control subjects, using a standardized informant-rated personality inventory. Personality alterations were observed in all patients, and the two diagnostic groups exhibited many similar behavioral alterations. DAT patients had significantly greater alterations in maturity and exhibited less personal control compared with the MID patients; the latter manifested more apathy and remained more affectionate and easy-going. Few correlations were found between the
