[Transoral ultrasonic flow metering of the vertebral arteries].

Using the method of ultrasonic flowmetering based on Doppler's effect with transoral positioning of the sensor occluding lesions of the vertebral arteries were diagnosed in 32 patients, in 22 of whom also the carotid arteries were involved. The method has proved to be effective in diagosing the subclavicular steal syndrome due to occlusions of the subclavicular arteries in 13 other patients. The agreement between the data of the transoral measurements of the blood flow in the vertebral arteries on the one hand, and the angiographic findings on the other was 81.1%. Disagreements were observed m

Ultrasonic differentiation of renal pelvic filling defects.

We herein describe 9 patients with non-opaque calculi and 3 patients with soft tissue filling defects in the renal pelvis studied by ultrasound. The calculi varied in size from 1.5 cm. to staghorn calculi. All stones were imaged satisfactorily by ultrasound, allowing the diagnosis of stone to be made with confidence. Ultrasonic differentiation of renal pelvic filling defects proved to be a simple, reliable, non-invasive method to differentiate these clinically perplexing lesions.

Ultrasonic examination in severe diabetic eye disease.

B-scan ultrasound of the posterior segment is reported in 154 patients with severe diabetic eye disease. Epiretinal fibrosis, vitreous haemorrhage, vitreous detachment, and retinal detachment were frequently diagnosed. The ultrasonic findings are discussed in relation to the pathological changes in the vitreous in proliferative diabetic retinopathy.

Ultrasonic detection of "hourglass membranes" with funic presentation.

Two cases of prolapse of the amniotic sac through a partially dilated cervix, the so-called "hourglass membranes," are presented. In both cases, ultrasonography revealed the umbilical cord in the prolapsed sac. Both fetuses were grossly immature, and efforts were made to delay labor. In neither patient did rupture of the membranes occur. Fetal distress developed in 1 case, necessitating an emergency cesarean section shortly after the initiation of tocolytic therapy. A 27-week, 800-g infant was delivered who subsequently died. The second case resulted in a 3-week delay in the delivery of a viab

Ultrasonic evaluation of "silent regions" in the thyroid scintiscan.

35 patients with scintigraphically silent thyroid regions without palpable cold nodules were further evaluated by ultrasonography. In 33 cases the sonographic diagnosis was confirmed by other examinations or the clinical course. 2 cases were misinterpreted right at the beginning of our series. The use of ultrasonography in evaluating silent thyroid regions in the totally decompensated autonomous adenoma, in unilateral thyroid aplasia, thyroiditis and hyperthyroidism is shown to be a reliable and valuable supplement to the clinical and radioisotopic evaluation procedures. When differentiating t

The ultrasonic characteristics of the renal pelvicalyceal echo complex.

The pelvicalyceal echo complex has a characteristic appearance as an echo-filled cylinder in which minimal sonolucency may normally be seen. Alteration in the pelvicalyceal echo complex is a helpful guide in the diagnosis of a variety of pathological processes involving the kidneys. Reliable diagnosis of moderate and marked hydronephrosis may be made by the appearance of uniformly sized, sonolucent collections in the pelvicalyceal echo complex which show communication with the renal pelvis. An adjacent simple renal cyst produces a sharply defined crescent shaped deformity of the pelvicalyceal

Primary ultrasonic detection of a double carcinoma of the colon.

Abdominal sonic scanning revealed two irregular, circular masses with light central reflexes followed by an acoustic shadowing effect. The diagnosis of two colonic tumors was subsequently confirmed by barium enema examination and surgery. Ultrasonic examination is capable of detecting colonic tumors above a certain unspecified size.

Ultrasonic diagnosis of fetal life in early pregnancy.

Ultrasound methods for detecting fetal life during early pregnancy are reviewed. By using recently developed techniques, fetal heart function can be detected as early as the 44th to 45th day of amenorrhea. Fetal movements in the amniotic cavity can be visualized from the 10th week on. If no signs of fetal life can be detected by ultrasound examination by the 10th week, the pregnancy is in jeopardy. However, the prognosis is favorable in over 90% of those cases of threatened abortion in which fetal life has been confirmed by ultrasound.
