Controlling for Participants' Viewing Distance in Large-Scale, Psychophysical Online Experiments Using a Virtual Chinrest.

While online experiments have shown tremendous potential to study larger and more diverse participant samples than is possible in the lab, the uncontrolled online environment has prohibited many types of psychophysical studies due to difficulties controlling the viewing distance and stimulus size. We introduce the Virtual Chinrest, a method that measures a participant's viewing distance in the web browser by detecting a participant's blind spot location. This makes it possible to automatically adjust stimulus configurations based on an individual's viewing distance. We validated the Virtual Ch

Psychometric evaluation of Simulator Sickness Questionnaire and its variants as a measure of cybersickness in consumer virtual environments.

Cybersickness, i.e. visually induced motion sickness, remains as a negative effect that is detrimental to the user experience of VEs (virtual environments) developed for VR (virtual reality) consumers. As the VR technology evolves, it is rather triggered by application aspects rather than hardware limitations. For this reason, there is still a need for a measurement method to assess and compare VEs for cybersickness effects. SSQ (Simulation Sickness Questionnaire) is used for measuring users' level of sickness symptoms and is highly appreciated in VR research. However, it is criticized for its

Structured Clinical Documentation to Improve Quality and Support Practice-Based Research in Headache.

OBJECTIVE: To use the electronic medical record (EMR) to optimize patient care, facilitate documentation, and support quality improvement and practice-based research, in a headache specialty clinic. BACKGROUND: Many physicians enter data into the EMR as unstructured free text and not as discrete data. This makes it challenging to use data for quality improvement or research initiatives. METHODS: We describe the process of building a customized structured clinical documentation support toolkit, specific for patients seen in a headache specialty clinic. The content was developed through freque

Automated detection of epileptic ripples in MEG using beamformer-based virtual sensors.

OBJECTIVE: In epilepsy, high-frequency oscillations (HFOs) are expressively linked to the seizure onset zone (SOZ). The detection of HFOs in the noninvasive signals from scalp electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) is still a challenging task. The aim of this study was to automate the detection of ripples in MEG signals by reducing the high-frequency noise using beamformer-based virtual sensors (VSs) and applying an automatic procedure for exploring the time-frequency content of the detected events. APPROACH: Two-hundred seconds of MEG signal and simultaneous iEEG were

Is clinical virtual reality ready for primetime?

OBJECTIVE: Since the mid-1990s, a significant scientific literature has evolved regarding the outcomes from the use of what we now refer to as clinical virtual reality (VR). This use of VR simulation technology has produced encouraging results when applied to address cognitive, psychological, motor, and functional impairments across a wide range of clinical health conditions. This article addresses the question, "Is clinical VR ready for primetime?" METHOD: After a brief description of the various forms of VR technology, we discuss the trajectory of clinical VR over the last 20 years and summ

Comparison between performance of single-fiber reflectance spectroscopy (SFRS) system and colposcopy: a phase III trial.

Herein, the performance of single-fiber reflectance spectroscopy (SFRS) in detection of cervical pre-cancerous squamous intraepithelial lesions (SIL) was compared with colposcopy. Based on the previous results obtained from 167 samples and finding the contributing parameters in differentiating SILs from non-SILs, a user-friendly interface was developed to detect the SILs using SFRS system. Detection of SILs in 301 patients was performed by both SFRS system and routine colposcopy. In addition to physician-determined sites, four quarters of the cervix were measured by SFRS system and suspicious

Wireless sEMG-Based Body-Machine Interface for Assistive Technology Devices.

Assistive technology (AT) tools and appliances are being more and more widely used and developed worldwide to improve the autonomy of people living with disabilities and ease the interaction with their environment. This paper describes an intuitive and wireless surface electromyography (sEMG) based body-machine interface for AT tools. Spinal cord injuries at C5-C8 levels affect patients' arms, forearms, hands, and fingers control. Thus, using classical AT control interfaces (keypads, joysticks, etc.) is often difficult or impossible. The proposed system reads the AT users' residual functional

A Framework to Automate Assessment of Upper-Limb Motor Function Impairment: A Feasibility Study.

Standard upper-limb motor function impairment assessments, such as the Fugl-Meyer Assessment (FMA), are a critical aspect of rehabilitation after neurological disorders. These assessments typically take a long time (about 30 min for the FMA) for a clinician to perform on a patient, which is a severe burden in a clinical environment. In this paper, we propose a framework for automating upper-limb motor assessments that uses low-cost sensors to collect movement data. The sensor data is then processed through a machine learning algorithm to determine a score for a patient's upper-limb functionali
