A retrospective cohort study of risk factors for missing preschool booster immunisation.

AIM: To identify factors associated with non-uptake of preschool booster immunisation. DESIGN: Data from the computerised child health system was used to study all children born in 1990 and living in South Glamorgan, Wales, on their 5th birthday. Factors associated with preschool booster uptake were investigated using multiple logistic regression. RESULTS: Preschool booster coverage in the study cohort was 91.4%. After adjustment for other variables, uptake was associated most strongly with completed primary immunisation for diphtheria, tetanus, and polio vaccine or first dose measles, mumps

Micro-planning for immunization in Kaduna State, Nigeria: Lessons learnt, 2017.

BACKGROUND: The OPV 3 coverage for Kaduna State, 12-23 months old children was 34.4%. The low OPV 3 coverage, due mainly to weak demand for routine antigens and the need to rapidly boost population immunity against the disabling Wild Polio Virus (WPV), led the Global Polio Eradication Initiatives (GPEI) to increase supplemental OPV campaigns in Kaduna State, despite the huge cost and great burden on personnel. The OPV campaigns, especially in high risk (low vaccine uptake, <80% OPV 3 coverage and high vaccines refusal rate) states of northern Nigeria with poliovirus transmission has resulted i

HPV vaccination willingness and its determinants among male university students post-approval of male-specific HPV vaccines in China: a large-scale cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Given limited prior studies on Chinese male university students’ human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination willingness and SARS-CoV-2 vaccination shaping their relevant understanding/awareness, we conducted a large-scale cross-sectional study to explore their HPV-related willingness post male-approved HPV vaccines and key determinants of vaccination decisions. METHODS: The cross-sectional study used convenience sampling to conduct a questionnaire online survey for male university students aged 18–30 years old across 30 provinces/autonomous regions/municipalities of China in 2025. A st

Investigation of regurgitation and other symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux in Indonesian infants.

AIM: To evaluate the incidence of regurgitation and other symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux in Indonesian infants. METHODS: In a cross-sectional study at the University Outpatient Clinic for vaccination in Jakarta, 138 mothers of healthy infants less than 12-mo old were prospectively asked to report the frequency of regurgitation. RESULTS: Whatever the age was, some infants did not regurgitate (from 10% during the first month of life to 67% in 1-year-old infants). Regurgitation of at least once a day was reported in 77% of infants younger than 3 mo. Daily regurgitation decreased to 12% in

Discriminatory attitudes against unvaccinated people during the pandemic.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, sizeable groups of unvaccinated people persist even in countries with high vaccine access1. As a consequence, vaccination became a controversial subject of debate and even protest2. Here we assess whether people express discriminatory attitudes in the form of negative affectivity, stereotypes and exclusionary attitudes in family and political settings across groups defined by COVID-19 vaccination status. We quantify discriminatory attitudes between vaccinated and unvaccinated citizens in 21 countries, covering a diverse set of cultures across the world. Across thr

Acceptance and attitudes toward COVID-19 vaccines: A cross-sectional study from Jordan.

Vaccines are effective interventions that can reduce the high burden of diseases globally. However, public vaccine hesitancy is a pressing problem for public health authorities. With the availability of COVID-19 vaccines, little information is available on the public acceptability and attitudes towards the COVID-19 vaccines in Jordan. This study aimed to investigate the acceptability of COVID-19 vaccines and its predictors in addition to the attitudes towards these vaccines among public in Jordan. An online, cross-sectional, and self-administered questionnaire was instrumentalized to survey ad

Relapses of idiopathic inflammatory myopathies after vaccination against COVID-19: a real-life multicenter Italian study.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) vaccination plays a crucial role as pivotal strategy to curb the coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) pandemic. The present study described the clinical status of patients affected by idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIM) after COVID-19 vaccination to assess the number of relapses. We included all patients affected by IIM and followed by Myositis Clinic, Rheumatology and Respiratory Diseases Units, Siena University Hospital, Bari University Hospital, Policlinico Umberto I, Sapienza University, Rome, and Policlinico Paolo Giaccone, Pa

Pediatric Resident Education and Preparedness Regarding Vaccine-Preventable Diseases.

This study assessed pediatric residents' reported knowledge of and self-confidence in identifying/treating 8 vaccine-preventable diseases. Pediatric residents nationwide (n = 385) reported (1) if they had previously diagnosed measles, mumps, rubella, diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, varicella, and/or polio; (2) their comfort level in treating these diseases; (3) the likelihood of identifying symptoms; and (4) 16 disease-related statements as true/false. More than 25% of residents were not comfortable treating 5 of the 8 diseases. More than 25% reported themselves as unlikely/extremely unlikely

Listening to the rumours: what the northern Nigeria polio vaccine boycott can tell us ten years on.

In 2003 five northern Nigerian states boycotted the oral polio vaccine due to fears that it was unsafe. Though the international responses have been scrutinised in the literature, this paper argues that lessons still need to be learnt from the boycott: that the origins and continuation of the boycott were due to specific local factors. We focus mainly on Kano state, which initiated the boycotts and continued to reject immunisations for the longest period, to provide a focused analysis of the internal dynamics and complex multifaceted causes of the boycott. We argue that the delay in resolving

[Analysis of Koch's phenomenon by BCg vaccination with the multi-puncture method in Japan].

PURPOSES: In Japan, BCG vaccination without a prior tuberculin skin test was started in 2005. Koch's phenomenon is well known as a skin reaction that appears within a few days at the BCG vaccination site if the vaccination is given to a person infected with tuberculosis. However, little has been known regarding Koch's phenomenon in cases where BCG is administered by the multi-puncture method. All doctors who observe Koch's phenomenon are requested to provide a report to the local government, which then transfers the report to the Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare. The purpose of the pres

DTaP-induced infantile epileptic spasms syndrome high-risk window: Insights from school-age children.

To determine the specific high-risk characteristics and temporal window associated with Diphtheria, Tetanus, and acellular Pertussis (DTaP) vaccine-precipitated infantile epileptic spasms syndrome (IESS), providing evidence for optimizing vaccination safety strategies, we conducted a multicenter retrospective cohort study of 564 patients with long-term follow-up (6.5-10.5 y). Patients were stratified by seizure onset interval into Vaccination-proximate (≤72 hours) and distant (>72 hours) groups. The proximate group (n = 53, 9.4%) exhibited a significantly younger age distribution (median [IQR]

Why did I participate in an HIV vaccine study? Experiences of participation in the first phase II HIV vaccine trial in Mozambique: An ancillary study using a mixed-method approach.

INTRODUCTION: This study recognized the lack of information regarding recruitment and retention factors associated with implementing HIV vaccine trials from the perspective of de facto participants. It aimed to describe the motives and experiences of 31 young adults who participated in a phase II HIV vaccine clinical trial conducted in Maputo, Mozambique. METHODS: This was an ancillary study with a mixed-method approach that employed a convergent design, combining both quantitative and qualitative methodologies. Data collection involved questionnaire surveys, in-depth interviews, and focus gr

Addressing MMR Vaccine Resistance in Minnesota's Somali Community.

Over the past 10 years, Minnesota clinicians have noticed increased resistance to MMR vaccination among Somali Minnesotans. Misinformation about a discredited study asserting a link between the MMR vaccine and autism has permeated this community as parents have increasingly become concerned about the prevalence of autism spectrum disorder among their children. As a result, MMR vaccination rates among U.S.-born children of Somali descent are declining. This article reports findings from an investigation by the Minnesota Department of Health, which was undertaken to better understand vaccine hes

When the one true faith trumps all: Low religious diversity, religious intolerance, and science denial.

Past theories have linked science denial to religiosity but have not explained its geographic variability. We hypothesize that it springs not only from religious intensity but also from religious intolerance, which depends greatly on the experience of religious diversity and hence on geography. The belief that one's religion trumps other faiths precipitates the stance that it trumps science too. This psychological process is most likely to operate in regions or countries with low religious heterogeneity. We measure the rejection of science not only in people's refusal to follow specific health

Diabetic Ketoacidosis After COVID-19 Vaccine in Patients with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus.

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccine is one of the few vaccines that obtained emergency authorization to combat the fatal pandemic. Despite the fact that some available literature addressed its short-term side effects, there are still limitations on its effects on type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present study was to assess the association between COVID-19 vaccination and diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) among individuals with T1DM. Additionally, the study aimed to determine the effects of the vaccine on glucose control, variability, and risk of hy

Impact of Dark Triad personality traits on COVID-19 vaccination uptake and prevention efforts: insights from the European Covid Survey (ECOS).

BACKGROUND: Even though the COVID-19 vaccination roll-out in general can be considered as one of the most successful public health campaigns in the history of medicine, general vaccination hesitancy has remained an issue of concern throughout the world. We add to a deeper understanding of vaccination hesitancy by identifying what drives primary vaccination and booster uptake, as well as adherence to simple preventive measures such as physical distancing by investigating the role of Dark Triad personality traits, i.e. Machiavellianism, narcissism, and psychopathy. METHODS: We investigate data

Free to choose but liable for the consequences: should non-vaccinators be penalized for the harm they do?

Can parents who choose not to vaccinate their children be held legally liable for any harm that results? The state of laboratory and epidemiological understanding of a disease such as measles makes it likely that a persuasive causal link can be established between a decision to not vaccinate, a failure to take appropriate precautions to isolate a non-vaccinated child who may have been exposed to measles from highly vulnerable persons, and a death. This paper argues that, even if a parent chooses to not vaccinate a child under a state law permitting exemptions, that decision does not create com

Local resistance to the global eradication of polio: newspaper coverage of the 2003-2004 vaccination stoppage in northern Nigeria.

Successful global health initiatives are executed on the recognition that globalization involves simultaneous pulls between global unification and fragmentation. This article responds to the need for more understanding of the role of fragmentation in global health initiatives through analyses of 52 northern Nigerian newspaper reports of the 2003-2004 northern Nigerian stoppage of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. By 2009 the stoppage had resulted in an epidemic in Nigeria and polio importations in 20 previously polio-free countries. Findings pointed to beliefs in contemporary forms of W
