Vacuum-assisted venous drainage in adult cardiac surgery: a propensity-matched study.

OBJECTIVES: Conventional cardiopulmonary bypass with gravity drainage leads inevitably to haemodilution. Vacuum-assisted venous drainage (VAVD) utilizes negative pressure in the venous reservoir, allowing active drainage with a shortened venous line to reduce the priming volume. The goal of this study was to analyse the efficacy and safety of VAVD. METHODS: Data on 19 687 patients (18 681 with gravity drainage and 1006 with VAVD) who underwent cardiac operations between 1 January 2015 and 31 January 2018 were retrospectively collected from a single centre. Propensity matching identified 1002 …

Laparoscopic ventral rectopexy using the transanal vacuum test for complete rectal prolapse.

Laparoscopic ventral rectopexy was performed in 84 patients with complete rectal prolapse from January 2016 to December 2019. In the initial 27 cases, three cases had recurrence, especially in cases of a long rectal prolapse measuring over 10 cm. In order to avoid recurrence, the transanal vacuum test was performed following the dissection of the rectovaginal septum towards the pelvic floor. The disappearance of rectal prolapse is confirmed by the intraoperative transanal vacuum test. When the posterior wall of the rectum showed the presence of prolapse according to the transanal vacuum test, …

Successful management of cesarean scar pregnancy with vacuum extraction under ultrasound guidance.

AIM: Cesarean scar pregnancy (CSP) is a rare type of ectopic pregnancy. The gestational sac is implanted in the myometrium at the site of a previous cesarean section. Mothers with CSP are faced with risks of unpredictable massive bleeding or more fatal complications. The purpose of this retrospective study was to assess the feasibility, efficacy, and reliability of the intraoperative ultrasound-guided vacuum aspiration method as an effective treatment option for CSP. METHODS: We undertook a retrospective analysis of CSP patients who had undergone the vacuum aspiration method, by reviewing pat…

Hazardous dichloromethane recovery in combined temperature and vacuum pressure swing adsorption process.

Organic vapors emitted from solvents used in chemical and pharmaceutical processes, or from hydrocarbon fuel storage stations at oil terminals, can be efficiently captured by adsorption onto activated carbon beds. To recover vapors after the adsorption step, two modes of regeneration were selected and could be possibly combined: thermal desorption by hot nitrogen flow and vacuum depressurization (VTSA). Because of ignition risks, the conditions in which the beds operate during the adsorption and regeneration steps need to be strictly controlled, as well as optimized to maintain good performanc…

Primary suture-less closure of gastroschisis using negative pressure dressing (wound vacuum).

INTRODUCTION: Primary suture-less closure of gastroschisis using negative pressure dressing (wound vacuum) involves the application of an initial preformed Silo with subsequent bedside suture-less closure of the defect using negative pressure dressing. The advantages of this gentle approach are the simple bedside closure without intubation, paralysis or ventilation as well as reduced risk of barotrauma, abdominal compartment syndrome, acidosis, bowel infarction and necrotizing enterocolitis. This study is a report of the technique we used for gastroschisis closure at our institute. METHODS: T…

Loxoscelism and negative pressure wound therapy (vacuum-assisted closure): an experimental study.

Brown recluse spider (Loxosceles) bites cause lesions ranging from chronic necrotic ulcers to acute life-threatening sepsis. Based on our experience in treating acute and chronic wounds with negative pressure, we postulated that vacuum-assisted closure (VAC) would be valuable in this application. Chester pigs were procured and injected with purified brown recluse spider venom, 1 µl of venom in two anterior sites and 0·1 µl of venom in two posterior sites on their dorsum. For each concentration of venom, treatment consisted of either VAC or dry, non adherent dressings (control group). Each day,…

Vacuum-assisted closure for sternal wounds: a first-line therapeutic management approach.

BACKGROUND: Vacuum-assisted closure therapy has gained widespread use since its introduction in 1997. Previous studies have attributed significant benefit to its use for treatment of sternal wounds with or without mediastinitis. Management of sternal wounds with this therapy has been shown to decrease the number of dressing changes, reduce the time between débridement and definitive closure, and reduce costs associated with a protracted course of in-hospital dressing changes. The therapy has been used both as a bridge between débridement and definitive closure and as a catalyst to secondary st…

Diagnostic accuracy of vacuum-assisted biopsy device for image-detected breast lesions.

BACKGROUND: Non-palpable breast lesions present diagnostic difficulties. Ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is a common method used to obtain a diagnosis, but FNAC is frequently inconclusive or insufficiently accurate. Recently a vacuum-assisted biopsy device (Mammotome, Ethicon, Endo-surgery, USA) has been introduced. The diagnostic accuracy of this biopsy device was assessed for lesions that were visible on ultrasound. METHODS: Fifty ultrasound-guided mammotome biopsies were performed. All were small breast lesions primarily detected by ultrasound. All received FNAC as…

Vacuum-assisted closure to treat deep sternal wound infection following cardiac surgery.

Deep sternal wound infection is a devastating and potentially lethal complication following cardiac surgery. Established treatment may involve debridement, packing, delayed closure, plastic reconstruction, re-wiring and irrigation, depending on the severity of infection. The authors prefer early debridement and rewiring with irrigation if possible. If this method fails the results are often poor. Vacuum-assisted closure (VAC) of complex infected wounds has recently gained popularity among various surgical specialties. This article describes the successful application of this novel technique in…

[Problems and results of skull x-ray following vacuum extraction (author's transl)].

The vacuum extraction supplies the forceps nearly complete on the IInd Department of obstetrics and gynecology Vienna in the last years. Skull X-ray of 104 newborns following vacuum extraction and of 101 spontaneous delivered newborns are examined on the incidence of fractures, fracture-fissures, elevations and widening of skull sutures. Early pathological findings are rigid criteria for the possible danger due to a method of operative delivery but we have no typical late damage after vacuum extraction or forceps delivery, we don't find in spontaneous born children too.

[The effect of vacuum vibration investing and vacuum mixing on the properties of "LAW-Modellguss investment" and the fit of cast structures from cobalt-chromium-molybdenum alloys. 1. Technologic-experimental tests].

Using materials-scientific test methods, the author studied the effect of vacuum mixing and vibration on the setting and the thermal expansion and contraction behaviour of the investment compound "LAW-Modellgusseinbettmasse" as well as on its hardness and structure after setting. The results obtained show that vacuum processing may considerably improve the properties which are of importance in model casting.
