INTRODUCTION: It is well established that individuals exposed to alcohol in utero have reduced cortical grey matter volumes. However, the candidate determinants of these reductions, cortical thickness (CT) and surface area (SA), have not been investigated exclusively in alcohol-related neurodevelopmental disorder (ARND), the most prevalent fetal alcohol spectrum disorder subgroup that lacks the characteristic facial dysmorphology.
METHODS: T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging scans were obtained from 88 participants (8-16 years), 36 diagnosed with ARND and 52 typically developing controls.

Term monkey fetus 1620 sustained 50 min of rapidly developing severe asphyxia which began immediately after its in utero version. The arterial blood pO2 decreased from a normal value of 34 to 11-12 mm Hg while the blood pH fell from 7.35 to 6.70. During this asphyxia, hemoglobin-oxygen saturations below 5% were recorded. The complete collapse of the umbilical circulation several minutes prior to the reoxygenation of the fetus added an episode of total asphyxia. With reoxygenation following delivery, fetal cardiovascular performance improved rapidly though over an hour was required for recovery

The increased number of women having a vaginal birth after a cesarean section can be attributed to changing physician trends. Women eligible for vaginal birth after cesarean section include those with previous low vertical incisions, multiple previous incisions and even unknown scars, regardless of the method of closure or previous indication. Limited data suggest that in carefully selected women a current twin gestation, breech presentation, or the presence of fetal macrosomia are not contraindications for a trial of labor, in the presence of a uterine scar. Changing trends in the management

BACKGROUND: Down syndrome or trisomy 21, the most common chromosomal disorder, results from the presence of a third copy of chromosome 21 and manifests as mild to moderate intellectual disability, growth retardation, congenital heart defects, gastrointestinal abnormalities, and characteristic facial features. Several methods have been used to screen for Down syndrome in the prenatal period, such as ultrasound, biomarkers, cell-free DNA testing, and combinations of these tests. A positive result from one or more of these screening tests signals the need for confirmatory karyotyping to clinch th

We previously showed correction of sickle cell anemia (SCA) in mice utilizing a lentiviral vector (LV) expressing human γ-globin. Herein, we made a G16D mutation in the γ-globin gene to generate the G16D mutation (GbGM) LV to increase fetal hemoglobin formation. We also generated an insulated version of this LV, GbGMI, inserting a 36-bp insulator from the Foamy virus in the long terminal repeats of the LV. Preclinical batches of GbGM and GbGMI LV showed both were highly efficacious in correcting SCA in mice, with sustained gene transfer in primary transplanted SCA mice and high hematopoietic s

BACKGROUND: The diagnostic process for fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) requires investments in both time and cost. The Brief Assessment of Individual Neurobehavior, online version (BRAIN-online), is a screening tool designed to identify cognitive and behavioral symptoms associated with FASD. BRAIN-online is effective in distinguishing individuals with histories of prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) and FASD; however, criterion validity of this screening tool has not been established. The goal of this study was to evaluate performance on BRAIN-online against gold-standard methods of measur

BACKGROUND: Preeclampsia (PE) is a significant obstetric complication associated with adverse maternal and fetal outcomes. Zambia, like several Sub-Saharan African nations, experiences a high prevalence of pregnancy-related hypertension, with PE being a major contributor to maternal and foetal mortality. This study aimed to identify the factors associated with the development of PE.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study at Livingstone University Teaching Hospital in Zambia (LUTH). PE was defined as new-onset hypertension with systolic blood pressure ≥140 mmHg or diastolic blood pressu

A Stillbirth is the birth of a newborn after 28th completed week (weighing 1000 gm or more) when the baby does not breathe or show any signs of life after delivery. It has an enormous impact on mothers, families, health care professionals and the community. Bangladesh has high stillbirth rate due to lack of access to antenatal care, home trial, high parity, social norms and customs etc. Multiple maternal and fetal risk factors have been identified that are associated with stillbirth. This study is intended to provide information for proper antepartum surveillance and also build up awareness in

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) and phthalate acid esters (PAEs) are prevalent endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs). Humans are often exposed to OPEs and PAEs simultaneously through multiple routes. Given that fetal stage is a critical period for neurodevelopment, it is necessary to know whether gestational co-exposure to OPEs and PAEs affects fetal neurodevelopment. However, accessible epidemiological studies are limited. The present study included 2, 120 pregnant women from the Ma'anshan Birth Cohort (MABC) study. The concentrations of tris (2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP), 6 OPE metabolites

Background Every antenatal woman and her treating doctor aim for a healthy newborn. In obstetrics, accurately determining the gestational age (GA) is a critical aspect of managing pregnancy and evaluating fetal growth and development. The transcerebellar diameter (TCD) is the greatest transverse measurement of the fetal cerebellum. The growth of the cerebellum is minimally affected by fluctuations in growth, making the TCD the most reliable measurement for predicting GA. The purpose of the present research is to determine the accuracy of TCD in estimating GA in the second and third trimesters

Disproportionate volume reductions in the basal ganglia, corpus callosum (CC) and hippocampus have been reported in children with prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE). However, few studies have investigated these reductions in high prevalence communities, such as the Western Cape Province of South Africa, and only one study made use of manual tracing, the gold standard of volumetric analysis. The present study examined the effects of PAE on subcortical neuroanatomy using manual tracing and the relation of volumetric reductions in these regions to IQ and performance on the California Verbal Learning

BACKGROUND: Previous studies using the California Verbal Learning Test-Children's Version (CVLT-C) to examine effects of heavy prenatal alcohol exposure on verbal learning and memory have reported impaired information acquisition (i.e., encoding), rather than retrieval, as the primary mechanism underlying learning and memory impairment. We administered the CVLT-C to 2 independent cohorts to determine whether (i) effects on encoding are also seen at moderate exposure levels, using both categorical (diagnostic/exposure group) and continuous exposure measures; (ii) these deficits are specific or
