OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to evaluate dentoskeletal effects of Herbst and Twin Block (TB) appliance therapies in Skeletal Class II malocclusion.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Herbst group consisted of 11 girls and 9 boys (mean age = 12.74 ± 1.43 years), TB group comprised of 10 girls and 10 boys (mean age = 13.0 ± 1.32 years), and control group included 9 girls and 11 boys (mean age = 12.17 ± 1.47 years). Tooth-borne/hybrid distraction devices offer a new approach for intraoral DO and better control of the distracted bony segments. These appliances also offer a unique characteristic by using the teeth as reference points for obtaining parallelism of the distraction devices to each other and to the vector of distraction in bilateral cases. More studies may be needed for long-term evaluation of the obtained results with intraoral distraction devices as well as biomechanical analysis of stress distribution throughout the mandible after distraction.

A total of 186 patients aged 40 to 65 with short interalveolar distance were treated. 65.5% of them developed pathological changes in the marginal periodontal tissues (inflammation, periodontal and osseous pouches, resorption of bone tissue of the maxillary alveolar process). Patients with involvement of the marginal periodontal tissue were treated by therapeutic, surgical, and orthodontic methods. Good results were attained in 95.1% of patients.

BACKGROUND: Surgically assisted rapid maxillary expansion (SARME) is usually considered the gold standard for maxillary transverse expansion in adults.
