The vestibulo-collic reflex generates neck motor commands to produce head-on-trunk movements that are essential for stabilizing the head relative to space. Here we examined the effects of vestibular loss on head-on-trunk kinematics during voluntary behavior. Head and trunk movements were measured in individuals with vestibular schwannoma before and then 6 weeks after unilateral vestibular deafferentation via surgical resection of the tumor. Movements were recorded in 6 dimensions (i.e., 3 axes of rotation and 3 axes of translation) using small light-weight inertial measurement units while part

OBJECTIVE: The relationship between vascular compression of the vestibulocochlear nerve and audio-vestibular symptoms remains controversial. We aimed to examine the radiological features of vascular loops signs in cerebellopontine angle (CPA) and internal auditory canal (IAC) in patients with unilateral Ménière's disease (MD).
METHODS: One hundred and thirty-seven patients with unilateral definite MD and 69 control subjects (138 ears) were enrolled. All subjects received magnetic resonance imaging of CPA-IAC. The configuration of vascular loops in CPA-IAC, based on the Kazawa classification s

BACKGROUND: Orthostatic dizziness/vertigo (ODV) is characterized by lightheadedness owing to postural changes.
AIMS/OBJECTIVES: To measure the endolymphatic space (ELS)/total fluid space (TFS) volume ratio and the distribution rate of endolymphatic fluid (ELF) of patients with ODV and compare them with those of control subjects (CS).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study included 22 patients (44 ears) with ODV and 52 controls (104 ears, CS). The ELS/TFS volume ratio (%) and distribution rate (%) of the inner ear components were measured using 3-dimensional magnetic resonance imaging.
RESULTS: I

Three forms of peripheral vestibular disorders, each with its typical symptoms and clinical signs, can be differentiated functionally, anatomically and pathophysiologically: 1. inadequate unilateral paroxysmal stimulation or rarely inhibition of the peripheral vestibular system, e. g., BPPV, Menière's disease, vestibular paroxysmia or syndrome of the third mobile windows; 2. acute unilateral vestibulopathy leading to an acute vestibular tone imbalance manifesting as an acute peripheral vestibular syndrome; and 3. loss or impairment of function of the vestibular nerve and/or labyrinth: bilatera

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The aim of this study was to illuminate the extent of the bilateral central vestibular network from brainstem and cerebellum to subcortical and cortical areas and its interrelation to higher cortical functions such as spatial cognition and anxiety.
RECENT FINDINGS: The conventional view that the main function of the vestibular system is the perception of self-motion and body orientation in space and the sensorimotor control of gaze and posture had to be developed further by a hierarchical organisation with bottom-up and top-down interconnections. Even the vestibulo-ocular a

BACKGROUND: Cervical dystonia (CD) is an intricate neurological condition with motor and nonmotor symptoms. These include disruptions in visual perception, self-orientation, visual working memory, and vestibular functions. However, the specific impact of CD on perceiving self-motion direction, especially with isolated visual or vestibular stimuli, remains largely unexplored.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the effects of CD on linear motion perception, hypothesizing impaired heading discrimination in both vestibular and visual tasks, and that such deficits correlate with the disease se

OBJECT: Vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) and the subjective visual horizontal (SVH) (or vertical [SVV]) have both been considered tests of otolith function: ocular-VEMPs (oVEMPs) utricular function, cervical VEMPs (cVEMPs) saccular function. Some studies have reported association between decreased oVEMPs and SVH, whereas others have not.
DESIGN: A retrospective study of test results.
SETTING: A tertiary, neuro-otology clinic, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Sydney, Australia.
METHOD: We analyzed results in 130 patients with acute vestibular neuritis tested within 5 days of onset.

It has been suggested that vascular loops in the cerebellopontine angle and internal auditory canal are involved in the etiology of audio-vestibular symptoms. Several studies have focused on the compression of the eighth cranial nerve by vascular loops but have yielded contradictory results regarding their clinical significance. The aim of this study was to investigate whether vascular loops in this region correlate with audio-vestibular symptoms and which loop features - if any - can potentially lead to symptom manifestation. This systematic review was conducted according to the PRISMA guidel

BACKGROUND: Virtual reality (VR) is an effective technique to reduce cost and increase fidelity in training programs. In VR, visual and vestibular cues are often in conflict, which may result in simulator-induced motion sickness. The purpose of this study is to investigate the integration of Galvanic Vestibular Stimulation (GVS) with a VR flight training simulator by assessing flight performance, secondary task performance, simulator sickness and presence.METHODS: There were 20 participants who performed 2 separate VR flight simulation sessions, with and without GVS (control). Flight performan

Adult aging is associated with reductions in muscle function and standing balance control. However, whether sensorimotor function adapts to maintain upright posture in the presence of age-related muscle weakness is unclear. The purpose was to determine whether vestibular control of balance is altered in older compared to younger females and whether vestibular-evoked balance responses are related to muscle power. Eight young (22.6 ± 1.8 years) and eight older (69.7 ± 6.7 years) females stood quietly on a force plate, while subjected to random, continuous electrical vestibular stimulation (EVS;

OBJECTIVE: This retrospective study aimed to verify the outcomes of stabilising occlusal splint therapy prescribed to 22 patients with unilateral definite Ménière's disease and comorbid temporomandibular joint disorder.
METHODS: The results of a battery of audiometric and vestibular tests were recorded before and after 6 months of treatment, as well as the scores of disease-specific questionnaires.
RESULTS: The average hearing threshold in the affected ear and the acoustic immittance were unchanged. No spontaneous and positional nystagmus were recorded. Caloric hypo-responsiveness and vestib

OBJECTIVES: Older adults with age-related hearing loss (ARHL) are at greater risk of falling and have greater mobility problems than older adults with normal hearing (NH). The underlying cause of these associations remains unclear. One possible reason is that age-related declines in the vestibular system could parallel those observed in the auditory system within the same individuals. Here, we compare the sensitivity of vestibular perceptual abilities (psychophysics), vestibular end-organ functioning (vestibular evoked myogenic potentials and video head impulse tests), and standing balance (po

PURPOSE: Suppression head impulse testing (SHIMP) is a new vestibular method capable of quantifying vestibular function. The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of this test in patients with existing or newly diagnosed vestibular schwannoma (VS) patients by comparing the results with the traditionally used video head impulse test (vHIT or HIMP).
METHODS: Fifty-five patients with unilateral VS underwent a wide battery of audiological and vestibular tests. HIMP results were evaluated using newly introduced objective guidelines based on the trace evaluation of pathological saccades

BACKGROUND: Hydropic Ear Disease (Menière) is one of the most common inner ear disorders and one of the most common causes of vertigo attacks. The underlying pathology is a distension of the endolymphatic space of the inner ear, termed endolymphatic hydrops. However, the unequivocal morphologic confirmation of ELH has been restricted to post-mortem histologic analysis until 2007, when the first clinical MR imaging report demonstrated ELH in living patients with Menière's disease at 3 T combined with intratympanic application of contrast. Imaging techniques have since then evolved further. Howe
