OBJECTIVE: To determine the various causes of hypercalcemia in a population of US veterans at the San Diego Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of medical records was performed on 212 US veterans encountered between 1998 and 2002 with serum calcium measurements between 10.5 and 10.9 mg/dL on multiple readings or 11.0 mg/dL (or greater) on any single determination. Despite the dramatic growth of homelessness research, there have been no systematic assessments of consumer and provider preferences regarding the content of this research. This study evaluated the potential relationship between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and sexual problems. The Golombok Rust Inventory of Sexual Satisfaction was mailed to combat veterans currently in treatment at an outpatient PTSD clinic. Completed questionnaires were received from 90 patients. OBJECTIVE: To comprehensively evaluate complaints of muscle fatigue, weakness, and myalgias in Persian Gulf veterans (PGV).
BACKGROUND: Approximately 700,000 American troops were deployed to the Persian Gulf during Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Upon return from the Gulf, some PGV developed unexplained illnesses, and special referral centers were established for the evaluation of these patients. Among the most common symptoms of these PGV are fatigue, weakness, and myalgias. An Institute of Medicine committee recommended further exploration into the possible etiologies of these complaints.

Of 244 men who, as the result of a brain wound sustained in World War II, had had one or more convulsive seizures, 101 have died. Except for men who succumbed in the first decade of complications of the wounding--infection, systemic or mental disease, status epilepticus, etc--the cause of death was similar to that of men of similar age in the general population. A long-term follow-up of 740 American servicemen splenectomised because of trauma during the 1939-45 war showed a significant excess mortality from pneumonia and ischaemic heart-disease. Mortality from cirrhosis was also increased, but not significantly. The findings confirm that the risk of fatal infections is increased by asplenia; however, the risk of cancer was not increased, as it is in some other immunodeficiency states. Post-splenectomy thrombocytosis and hypercoagulability may account for the increased risk of fatal myocardial ischaemia in this group.

BACKGROUND: Magnesium is essential for myocardial function and rhythm. Although typically well-regulated, patients with heart failure are prone to magnesium deficiency. Most clinical laboratories define normal serum magnesium as 1.6-2.6 mg/dL, but this range may include chronic latent magnesium deficiency.
