Exercise does not enhance short-term deprivation-induced ocular dominance plasticity: evidence from dichoptic surround suppression.

The input from the two eyes is combined in the brain. In this combination, the relative strength of the input from each eye is determined by the ocular dominance. Recent work has shown that this dominance can be temporarily shifted. Covering one eye with an eye patch for a few hours makes its contribution stronger. It has been proposed that this shift can be enhanced by exercise. Here, we test this hypothesis using a dichoptic surround suppression task, and with exercise performed according to American College of Sport Medicine guidelines. We measured detection thresholds for patches of sinuso

Impact of incident age-related macular degeneration and associated vision loss on vision-related quality of life.

BACKGROUND: We examined the associations between the 6-year incidence of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and vision-related quality of life (VRQoL), and the contribution of presenting visual acuity (VA), in an Asian population. METHODS: Fundus images from the Singapore Chinese Eye Study, a population-based cohort study (baseline: 2009-2011; follow-up: 2015-2017), were graded using a modified Wisconsin age-related maculopathy grading system. Incident AMD was defined as no baseline AMD in both eyes and early/late AMD in the worse eye at follow-up. Presenting VA was assessed using the log

Do all visual deficits cause pure alexia? Dissociations between visual processing and reading suggest "no".

Pure alexia is a deficit of reading affecting the ability to process a word's letters in parallel. Instead, a slow, effortful letter-by-letter reading strategy is employed. It has been claimed that a visual impairment caused the reading impairment. The present study compares visual processing and word reading of a patient with severe visuospatial deficits due to probable posterior cortical atrophy (PCA) to two patients with pure alexia. A double dissociation emerged between visual processing and word reading: The participant with PCA was severely impaired in all visual tasks but read fluently

Ocular and visual disorders in Parkinson's disease: Common but frequently overlooked.

Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) often compensate for their motor deficits by guiding their movements visually. A wide range of ocular and visual disorders threatens the patients' ability to benefit optimally from visual feedback. These disorders are common in patients with PD, yet they have received little attention in both research and clinical practice, leading to unnecessary - but possibly treatable - disability. Based on a literature search covering 50 years, we review the range of ocular and visual disorders in patients with PD, and classify these according to anatomical structures

Influence of Binocular Visual Anomalies on Reading in First Grade School Children with High Visual Acuity.

The aim of this study was to describe the binocular visual status of first grade children with high binocular visual acuity. The results have shown that only 5.1% of children had normal binocular vision, 25.7% had only moderate and 67.9% had severe and moderate binocular anomalies. Significant differences were revealed between students with poor reading and with normal reading with respect to reduced convergence (P < 0.001), and mean scores of behavior symptom numbers, indicating the presence of binocular visual anomalies (P < 0.002).

Approaches to rehabilitation for visual field defects following brain lesions.

Visual field defects often result from stroke and brain injury. The resulting visual impairment can be debilitating for patients, impeding daily activities such as reading and mobility. Historically, it was believed that there was little opportunity for restoration of function following visual system damage. However, the development of various visual rehabilitative strategies suggests that visual field defects are partially repairable and a certain degree of function can be improved. While this provides hope for patients, many of these strategies have been met with skepticism within the clinic

Healthy People 2010--vision objectives for the nation.

BACKGROUND: In January 2000, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services released new national health goals and objectives in a report entitled Healthy People 2010. This national report includes specific objectives for improving the vision of people in the United States during the 2000-2010 decade through prevention, early detection, treatment, and rehabilitation. The vision objectives, along with other health objectives, are designed to help the nation achieve two major outcomes: (1) increase the quality and years of healthy life and (2) eliminate health disparities among different group

The influence of heterophoria measurements on subsequent associated phoria measurement in a refractive routine.

The influence of measuring heterophoria on a subsequent associated phoria measurement was investigated in 50 subjects. After refraction, heterophoria was measured by either von Graefe's technique or Maddox rod and wing. The effect of these procedures was assessed by associated phoria measurements taken before and after the dissociated measures. It is shown that subjects with a history of unstable binocular vision are likely to have an associate phoria induced or changed by the previous dissociated phoria measurement, particularly if von Graefe's technique is employed. It is recommended that, e

The role of vergence adaptation in recovery of binocular single vision (BSV) following sensory strabismus.

Vergence adaptation is an important element of comfortable binocular single vision and probably contributes to the high incidence of orthophoria or small angles of heterophoria in the normal population. Where binocular single vision has been absent for a period of time, restoration of good visual acuity appears to enable the vergence adaptation mechanism to become active again. A case is presented in which a moderate to large angle of deviation rapidly 'disappeared' once good visual acuity was restored and the disparate images could be fused. Known factors concerning vergence adaptation are di

[The mechanism of inhibition of binocular vision in convergent strabismus (author's transl)].

The mechanism of inhibition of binocular vision (at a cortical level in the Pavlovian sense) in convergent strabismus is described. The study concerns both those patients whith no amblyopia and those whose amblyopia has been cured. Part one of the article describe the clinical characteristics of this cortical inhibition as shown by the polarised light stereoscopic projector. Some basic concepts with this therapeutic application are described in part two. In this paper the author suggests a relationships between the severity of inhibition of binocularity and the degree of disturbance in spatial

Eleven Years of Cataract Surgery in Veterans Without Pre-existing Ocular Comorbidities.

INTRODUCTION: In 2017, over 75,000 cataract surgeries were performed within the Veterans Health Administration System (VHA). Previous reports of outcomes of cataract surgery in veterans include patients with pre-existing ocular disease, which can affect vision. To exclude the confounding factor of pre-existing ocular comorbidities, we investigated the long-term visual outcomes and complications associated with small incision cataract surgery performed on veterans without any pre-existing eye disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Institutional Review Board approved cohort study with detailed retrosp

Vision-specific health-related quality of life: content areas for nursing home residents.

Nursing home residents have a high prevalence of remediable visual impairment and blindness. Future research on the effectiveness of providing eye care to nursing home residents will need to include a vision-targeted health-related quality of life (HRQOL) instrument appropriate for this population. The purpose of this study was to identify the core content areas for such an instrument. In-depth interviews on vision-related issues were conducted with 40 residents. Interviews were audio-taped, transcribed, and coded using a standardized protocol. Binocular distance and near visual acuity were as

Emerging Ocular Pathogen Resistance and Clinically Used Solutions: A Problem That Is More than Meets the Eye.

Background/Objectives: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in ocular infections has become a serious concern with major implications for vision preservation. Bacterial AMR contributed to 4.71 million deaths worldwide in 2021, and ophthalmology mirrors these trends with multidrug resistance rates as high as 66% documented in some regions and persistently high methicillin resistance among common ocular pathogens. Across regions and care settings, traditional empiric therapies are losing effectiveness against an expanding range of pathogens, resulting in slower recovery, more complications, and, in ma

Saccades orchestrate intraocular glucose dynamics to shape visual responses in birds.

Birds exhibit remarkable vision despite lacking the classical retinal vasculature, raising an enigmatic question about how avascular retinas fulfill energy demands necessary for sight. Avian saccades couple rapid gaze shifts with cyclotorsional oscillations. In pigeons, we show that these saccades orchestrate intraocular metabolic dynamics and visual processing. Using combined measurements of eye movements, intraocular glucose, and neuronal activity in retinorecipient brain regions, we found that saccades induce intraocular glucose fluctuations that are closely linked to changes in visual resp
