Vision in athletes with intellectual disabilities: the need for improved eyecare.

BACKGROUND: Special Olympics provides sporting opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities (ID), and Lions Clubs International Opening Eyes GB offers vision screening for athletes at Special Olympics Games. METHODS: Opening Eyes GB screened the vision of 505 UK athletes at its inaugural event in 2001. The results were analysed and are presented here. RESULTS: Results showed that athletes do not differ from other people with ID in being at high risk of ocular and visual defects and many are not accessing eyecare. 15% reported never having an optometric eye examination, and yet 19%

A novel mutation in a case of dominant optic atrophy?

A 39-year-old healthy woman presented for decreased vision at distance and near for 4 years. She also noted a decrease in her color vision. Her best-corrected visual acuities were 20/70 in each eye. Her visual fields were abnormal, and she had bilateral sluggish pupils, impaired color vision, and optic disc pallor. The magnetic resonance imaging of the brain, heavy metal screen, autoimmune work-up, B12, B6, folate, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, rapid plasma reagin, and Lyme titer were all normal. Optical coherence tomography of the macula and electroretinogram were normal; the visual evoked

Prevalence of visual problems among stroke survivors in Hong Kong Chinese.

BACKGROUND: Stroke, a common cerebrovascular accident, usually results in various extents of functional disability. Extensive studies have shown that ocular and visual problems are common in patients with stroke. Unfortunately, current stroke rehabilitation programs rarely address stroke-related ocular and visual problems in Hong Kong. METHODS: To examine how visual impairment (for example, deterioration in visual acuity and restriction in visual field) affects the stroke population in Hong Kong, vision screening was conducted for post-stroke patients attending in-patient and out-patient stro

Prevalence of refractive errors among school-going children in a multistate study in India.

AIM: Much existing data on childhood refractive error prevalence in India were gathered in local studies, many now dated. The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence, severity and determinants of refractive errors among school-going children participating in a multistate vision screening programme across India. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, vision screening was conducted in children aged 5-18 years at schools in five states using a pocket vision screener. Refractive error was measured using retinoscopy, and subjective refraction and was defined both by spherical equivalent

Caretakers' stated willingness to pay for children's spectacles in cross river state, Nigeria and its implication for a cross-subsidisation scheme: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Understanding caretakers' willingness to pay (WTP) for their children's spectacles is essential to improving the sustainability of refractive error services and spectacle provision. Therefore, we investigated the willingness of caretakers to pay for their children's spectacles in a multi-centre study to develop a spectacle cross-subsidisation scheme in the Cross River State (CRS), Nigeria. METHODS: We administered the questionnaire to all caretakers whose children were referred from school vision screenings to four eye centres for full refraction assessment and dispensing of corre

Diagnosing protan heterozygosity using the Medmont C-100 colour vision test.

BACKGROUND: A surprisingly high 15 per cent of women in Caucasian societies are carriers of the genes for abnormal colour vision but there is no clinical method to identify them. It has long been known that heterozygotes for the protan colour vision deficiencies can demonstrate a reduced luminous sensitivity to red light. This is known as Schmidt's sign, which is thought to arise from mosaicism (Lyonisation). The Medmont C-100 colour vision test measures relative spectral sensitivity using flicker photometry to differentiate protans and deutans. It should be able to diagnose Schmidt's sign. M

Economic evaluation of orthoptic screening: results of a field study in 121 German kindergartens.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to analyze the cost-effectiveness of an orthoptic screening program in kindergarten children. METHODS: An empiric cost-effectiveness analysis was conducted as part of a field study of orthoptic screening. Three-year-old children (n = 1180) in 121 German kindergartens were screened by orthoptists. The number of newly diagnosed cases of amblyopia and amblyogenic factors (target conditions) was used as the measure of effectiveness. The direct costs of orthoptic screening were calculated from a third-party-payer perspective based on comprehensive measurement

Screening for glaucomatous visual field defects: the relationship between sensitivity, specificity and the number of test locations.

The visual field results from 104 eyes with early glaucomatous loss and 1860 normal eyes have been used to derive the relationship between sensitivity, specificity and the number of test locations in a visual field screening test. A logarithmic relationship was found between sensitivity and the number of test locations and a linear relationship between specificity and the number of test locations. The results indicate that large numbers of test locations are not required to reach high levels of sensitivity and that clinically it might be better to screen all patients with a few stimuli quickly

Fully automated method for glaucoma screening using robust optic nerve head detection and unsupervised segmentation based cup-to-disc ratio computation in retinal fundus images.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Visual impairment affects a significant part of the population worldwide. Glaucoma is one of these main causes, a chronic eye disease leading to progressive vision loss. Early glaucoma screening is an important task, allowing a slowing down of the pathology spreading and avoidance of irreversible vision damages. When manual assessment by experts suffers from disadvantages, exploiting the relevant Cup-to-Disc Ratio (CDR) feature as a structural indicator to assess the damage to the optic nerve head (ONH) is an efficient way for early glaucoma screening and diagnosis.

An attention-based transformer algorithm integrated with yolo framework for lesion localization and detection in diabetic retinopathy.

Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) is one of the major causes of vision loss among diabetic patients across the globe, and it is a major challenge to public health. It is important to detect the retinal abnormalities early to avoid progression of disease and permanent loss of vision. In this regard, the framework proposed provides an effective and automated method of DR screening with retinal fundus images. The model combines the merits of attention-based and transformer-based models and the You Only Look Once (YOLO) detection model to improve the level of feature representation and detection quality.
