BACKGROUND: Subacute combined degeneration (SCD) is a neurodegenerative disease caused by vitamin B12 deficiency. The lesions mainly involve the posterior cord, lateral cord, and peripheral nerves. Occasionally, the lesions also involve brain white matter and optic nerves in severe cases. Reports of drug-induced impaired absorption and metabolism of vitamin B12 resulting in SCD are scarce.
INTRODUCTION: A patient developed SCD after long-term use of tripterygium glycoside tablets in the treatment of glomerulonephritis. However, after discontinuation and vitamin B12 treatment with tripterygium

BACKGROUND: Neurotropic B vitamins play crucial roles as coenzymes and beyond in the nervous system. Particularly vitamin B1 (thiamine), B6 (pyridoxine), and B12 (cobalamin) contribute essentially to the maintenance of a healthy nervous system. Their importance is highlighted by many neurological diseases related to deficiencies in one or more of these vitamins, but they can improve certain neurological conditions even without a (proven) deficiency.
AIM: This review focuses on the most important biochemical mechanisms, how they are linked with neurological functions and what deficits arise fr

The coexistence of adrenal failure with either autoimmune thyroid disease and/or type 1 diabetes is defined as autoimmune polyglandular syndrome (APS) type 2 or Schmidt's syndrome. Vitiligo, hypergonadotropic hypogonadism, chronic autoimmune hepatitis, alopecia, pernicious anaemia and seronegative arthritis may also be present. We present a case of 45-year-old Indian man with progressive jaundice and asthenia for 3 months. He was also found to have pallor, icterus, dry coarse skin and delayed relaxation of ankle jerk. Investigations showed pancytopaenia with megaloblastic changes due to pernic

Convincing evidence links aberrant B-vitamin dependent hepatic methionine metabolism to the pathogenesis of alcoholic liver disease (ALD). This review focuses on the essential roles of folate and vitamins B6 and B12 in hepatic methionine metabolism, the causes of their deficiencies among chronic alcoholic persons, and how their deficiencies together with chronic alcohol exposure impact on aberrant methionine metabolism in the pathogenesis of ALD. Folate is the dietary transmethylation donor for the production of S-adenosylmethionine (SAM), which is the substrate for all methyltransferases that

BACKGROUND: Elevated plasma total homocysteine (p-tHcy) is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease, and an inverse association has been shown between the dietary intake of B-vitamins, B-vitamin profile and the concentration of p-tHcy.
AIM OF THE STUDY: The main objective of this investigation was to study the effect of a dietary intervention focusing on an increased intake of vegetables, fruits and bread. The effect of the dietary intervention was determined by the changes in plasma concentrations of tHcy, cysteine (cys), riboflavin, flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) and flav

Mitochondrial dysfunction may be a principal underlying event in aging, including the degenerative diseases of aging such as brain degeneration. Mitochondria provide energy for basic metabolic processes, and their decay with age impairs cellular metabolism and leads to cellular decline. Progress over the last decade in delaying the mitochondrial decay of aging is reviewed.

Febrile seizures (FS) are among the most common neurological disorders in childhood, and their pathogenesis may be influenced by multiple factors. As scientific research progresses, the significant role of B vitamins in the nervous system has become progressively clearer. In this study, children clinically diagnosed with FS were selected as the experimental group, and febrile children without a history of convulsions or a family history of seizures were selected as the control group to investigate the potential correlation between FS and whole-blood B vitamin levels. The concentrations of B vi

Vitamins are essential for the growth and normal function of human body. There are very few reports on vitamin A deficiency in pregnant women and newborn. Vitamin B complex includes various fractions essential to proper nutrition. The absence of vitamin C results Barlow disease in newborn. Vitamin D, the antirachitic Vitamin, is of great importance in safeguarding the mother and fetus from its relation to calcium and phosphorus metabolism. Vitamin E is also useful for the treatment of toxemia of pregnancy, intra-uterine growth retardation (IUGR), and neonatal jaundice. Vitamin K is well known …

BACKGROUND: Peripheral neuropathy (PN) is one of the most common disorders of the peripheral nervous system, affecting around 10% of the general adult population. PN results in pain, paraesthesia, and sensory loss, negatively impacting patients' quality of life. The condition is characterised by damage to peripheral nerves and is often linked to risk factors, among which diabetes is the most common cause. The incidence rate of patients suffering from PN has significantly increased in the last three decades, yet there are currently no pharmacological treatments to reverse or prevent the develop

Both insufficiency and excess of one-carbon nutrients (folate, choline, vitamins B6 and B12) during pregnancy have been associated with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). However, the precise nature of this association has not been clearly established. We hypothesized that GDM may affect one-carbon nutrients concentrations in the fetus, thus possibly participating in epigenetic programing of the offspring. Maternal blood was collected at recruitment (12-16 weeks). At delivery (28-42 weeks), both maternal and cord blood were collected. Blood concentrations of one-carbon nutrients and their me

Anemia of pregnancy, an important risk factor for fetal and maternal morbidity, is considered a global health problem, affecting almost 50% of pregnant women. In this article, diagnosis and management of iron, cobalamin, and folate deficiencies, the most frequent causes of anemia in pregnancy, are discussed. Three clinical cases are considered. Iron deficiency is the most common cause. Laboratory tests defining iron deficiency, the recognition of developmental delays and cognitive abnormalities in iron-deficient neonates, and literature addressing the efficacy and safety of IV iron in pregnanc

Cobalamin deficiency can lead to several adverse health consequences: folate trapping in the methylation cycle and subsequent impaired DNA biosynthesis; pernicious anemia hematologically, similar to that caused by folate deficiency; elevated blood homocysteine (tHcy) (risk factor for cardiovascular disease and adverse pregnancy outcomes); and neural tube defects (NTDs). Population-wide folate status is expected to improve where folic acid fortification policies for reducing NTD occurrence are established. However, there is concern that cobalamin deficiency and its characteristic neuropathy cou
