This review focuses on neurodevelopmental effects observed in animal studies of cannabis smoke and Δ9 -THC. Effects in offspring after preconceptional, prenatal, or perinatal exposure to cannabis smoke or Δ9 -THC were considered. Locomotor and exploratory behavior effects were noted in rats. Cognitive effects observed included impairment of memory and learning, attention deficits, time taken to complete tasks (rats) and alterations in response to visual stimuli (rats/monkeys). Emotionality was observed in rodents as an increase in separation-induced ultrasonic vocalizations, reduced social int

OBJECTIVE: Exposure of neonatal macaques to the antiseizure medications phenobarbital and midazolam (PbM) causes widespread apoptotic death of neurons and oligodendrocytes. We studied behavior and neurocognitive performance in 12 to 24 month-old macaques treated as neonates with PbM.
METHODS: A total of 14 monkeys received phenobarbital and midazolam over 24 hours under normothermia (n = 8) or mild hypothermia (n = 6). Controls (n = 8) received no treatment. Animals underwent testing in the human intruder paradigm at ages 12 and 18 months, and a 3-step stimulus discrimination task at ages 12,

Buffalo is a silent heat animal and doesn't show prominent signs of estrous like cattle so it becomes difficult for farmers to determine the receptivity of the animal based purely on the animal behaviour. India, having a huge population size, needs to produce more milk for the population. Successful artificial insemination greatly depends on the receptivity of the animal. Hence the present study aimed to identify the changes in the metabolome of the buffalo. GC-MS based mass spectrometric analysis was deployed for the determination of estrous by differential expression of metabolites. It was f

OBJECTIVES: We sought to determine whether serial intraoperative laryngeal electromyography (L-EMG) or evoked L-EMG predicts vocal fold (VF) recovery following iatrogenic injury.
METHODS: Six beagles were sedated, and bipolar needle electrodes were inserted into each thyroarytenoid (TA) muscle. Endotracheal tube surface electrodes were also placed. As the sedation lightened, L-EMG activity was recorded from all electrodes with an intraoperative nerve monitoring system. The neck was opened, and direct recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) stimulation was performed. Subsequently, 4 animals underwent

Goose-beaked whales (Ziphius cavirostris) are a deep-diving toothed whale species and top predators in deep sea ecosystems. Much is yet to be learned about their social and foraging strategies due to their elusive behavior, but this information is increasingly relevant given their demonstrated behavioral changes in association with anthropogenic sound. This study used direction-of-arrival (DOA) localization to track the position of goose-beaked whales from echolocation clicks recorded on seafloor-mounted hydrophone arrays offshore Southern California. Overall, 2738 tracks of diving goose-beake

Early deprivation of adult influence is known to have long-lasting effects on social abilities, notably communication skills, as adults play a key role in guiding and regulating the behavior of youngsters, including acoustic repertoire use in species in which vocal production is not learned. Cheetahs grow up alongside their mother for 18 months, thus maternal influences on the development of social skills are likely to be crucial. Here, we investigated the impact of early maternal deprivation on vocal production and use in 12 wild-born cheetahs, rescued and subsequently hand-reared either at a

Tonic Immobility (TI) functions as anti-predator defense. Its duration depends on cues signaling predator proximity. One such cue includes alarm calls from conspecifics and non-conspecifics. This study aimed to determine the cue within alarm calls that controls TI duration. We induced TI in chicks (Gallus gallus) and found that their TI durations increased in the presence of adult conspecific alarm calls, non-conspecific alarm calls, and synthetic sounds made of white noise set to the repetition rate found in natural alarm calls. Moreover, chicks did not increase their TI durations when exposed

Affective biases, or shifts in learning and decision-making driven by affective states, are central to human cognition. Studies in rodents have shown that pharmacological and stress manipulations alter reward valuation, but how positive social signals shape these processes remains poorly understood. Here, we adapted the affective bias test, a translational rodent assay of affective biases in depression and antidepressant therapy, to ask whether positive social signals influence reward valuation in orangutans (Pongo spp.). We first validated the task by manipulating reward magnitude during lear

Birdsong is a rare example of learned vocal communication. Like speech, song consists of acoustic units (syllables) that are learned from adults and organized into temporal sequences (syntax) during development. Tutors' and pupils' syllables and syntax are often the same, suggesting that both song features are learned. Syntax is highly species-specific and consistent across individuals and populations of the same species, unlike syllables. Here, we hypothesized that song syntax can be accurately predicted by computational models based on the relationship between syllable acoustics and order th

Although many animal species are known to learn to respond to human verbal commands, this ability is understudied, as are the cues used to do so. For the best-studied species, the dog, domestication itself is used to justify successful attending to human communicative cues. However, the role of domestication in sensitivity to human cues remains debated. Corvids are songbirds that engage in complex communicative behaviors with conspecifics and with other species. Rooks (Corvus frugilegus) are a cognitively complex, undomesticated corvid shown to possess complex vocal behaviors, and to learn to

In contrast to humans, the location where sound is produced in birds is not the larynx, but rather the so-called "vocal box" (scientific term "Syrinx"). In some species the syrinx is located at the bifurcation point of the trachea into the two main bronchi (tracheal vocal head), while in some in the main bronchi (bronchial vocal head). During inspiration, part of the air flows into the lungs, and the part needed for singing flows into the air sacs adjacent to the lungs. During expiration, air leaves the air sacs and flows through the syrinx, where the song is created. When birds sing in two vo

Domestic strains of canaries (Serinus canaria) variably respond to photoperiod changes and apparently stay in breeding state for extended periods. Fife Fancy canaries are supposed to be similar to the native species living at 27-39° north where photoperiod significantly changes across the year. Our birds showed reproductive cycles when exposed to light regimes mimicking the annual cycle of photoperiod. However after 6 months in short days (SD: 8L:16D), males developed large testes, as observed by X-ray tomography, and intense singing. Switching to long days (LD: 16L:8D) did not further increas

Injury, tumors, ischemia, and lesions in the cerebellum show the involvement of this region in human speech. The association of the cerebellum with learned birdsong has only been identified recently. Cerebellar dysfunction in young songbirds causes learning disabilities, but its role in adult songbirds has not been established. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of the deep cerebellar nuclei (DCN) in adult birdsong. We created bilateral excitotoxic lesions in the DCN of adult male zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata) and recorded their songs for up to 4 months. Using magnetic res

Song sessions produced by humpback whales recorded off the coasts of Hawaii and Colombia show recurrent patterns of acoustic variation across consecutive songs. Analyses of intra-individual variations within continuous song sessions revealed that songs consistently cycled through stages of acoustic complexity. At time scales spanning tens of minutes, cyclical variations likely reflected the diving behavior of singers. Changes over shorter time frames suggest that singing humpback whales may also systematically modulate the acoustic complexity of individual sounds during song production, both b

The Cape fur seal (Arctocephalus pusillus pusillus) is one of the most colonial mammals, with colonies of up to hundreds of thousands of individuals during the breeding season. During the lactation period, mothers and pups are regularly separated as females undertake multi-day foraging trips at sea. Mothers and pups use a mutual vocal recognition system to reunite after separation. Such communication is highly constrained by both high background noise and risk of individual confusion owing to the density of seals. This study aimed to experimentally assess the acoustic features relevant for mot

Voiced sound production is the primary form of acoustic communication in terrestrial vertebrates, particularly birds and mammals, including humans. Developing a causal physics-based model that ultimately links descending vocal motor control to tissue vibration and sound requires embodied approaches that include realistic representations of voice physiology. Here, we first implement and then experimentally test a high-fidelity three-dimensional (3D) continuum model for voiced sound production in birds. Driven by individual-based physiologically quantifiable inputs, combined with noninvasive inv

Birdsong is a complex behavior that exhibits hierarchical organization. While the representation of singing behavior and its hierarchical organization has been studied in some detail in avian cortical premotor circuits, our understanding of the role of the thalamus in adult birdsong is incomplete. Using a combination of behavioral and electrophysiological studies, we seek to expand on earlier work showing that the thalamic nucleus Uvaeformis (Uva) is necessary for the production of stereotyped, adult song in zebra finch (Taeniopygia guttata). We confirm that complete bilateral lesions of Uva a

Behavior is critically shaped during sensitive periods in development. Birdsong is a learned vocal behavior that undergoes dramatic plasticity during a sensitive period of sensorimotor learning. During this period, juvenile songbirds engage in vocal practice to shape their vocalizations into relatively stereotyped songs. By the time songbirds reach adulthood, their songs are relatively stable and thought to be "crystallized." Recent studies, however, highlight the potential for adult song plasticity and suggest that adult song could naturally change over time. As such, we investigated the degr
