Potential Biophysiological Mechanisms Underlying Vocal Demands and Vocal Fatigue.

Patients with complaint of vocal fatigue have perceptual, acoustic, and aerodynamic outcomes that are heterogeneous in nature. One reason may be due to different underlying biophysiological mechanisms that lead to these heterogeneous clinical presentations. Five potential mechanisms are proposed: neuromuscular, metabolic, vocal tissue, afferent, and central neural. Analytical frameworks and study designs to study these mechanisms are also addressed. A better understanding of biophysiological mechanisms of vocal fatigue can improve precision of therapeutic approaches. It can also help shift man

The Relationships Among Vocal Variability, Vocal-Articulatory Coordination, and Dysphonia in Children.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between vocal variability and variability of vocal-articulatory coordination in children. Furthermore, this study examined if this relationship was impacted by pediatric dysphonia. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective analysis of speech samples in the Arizona Child Acoustic Database. METHODS: Speech samples from children 2-7 years of age were selected for analysis. Vocal variability was defined as the coefficient of variation (CoV) of fundamental frequency, taken from the center of sustained vowels. Variability of vocal-articulator

Reliability and Accuracy of Expert Auditory-Perceptual Evaluation of Voice via Telepractice Platforms.

Purpose This study assessed the reliability and accuracy of auditory-perceptual voice evaluations by experienced clinicians via telepractice platforms. Method Voice samples from 20 individuals were recorded after transmission via telepractice platforms. Twenty experienced clinicians (10 speech-language pathologists, 10 laryngologists) evaluated the samples for dysphonia percepts (overall severity, roughness, breathiness, and strain) using a modified Consensus Auditory-Perceptual Evaluation of Voice. Reliability was calculated as the mean of squared differences between repeated ratings (intrara

Does a Systematic Vocal Exercise Program Enhance the Physiologic Range of Voice Production in Classical Singing Graduate-Level Students?

Purpose The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of vocal function exercises (VFEs) on the physiologic range of the operatic voice. The primary outcome measure was total voice range profile (VRP) area. Method Forty graduate-level opera majors were randomly assigned to experimental (training with VFE + vocal hygiene) and control (vocal hygiene only) groups. All participants underwent an acoustic voice assessment (modified VRP) pre and post 10 weeks of the assigned intervention. VRP total area was calculated and compared between and within the two groups. The total VRP area was subseq

Measuring Voice Effects of Vibrato-Free and Ingressive Singing: A Study of Phonation Threshold Pressures.

BACKGROUND: Phonation threshold pressure (PTP), showing the lowest subglottal pressure producing vocal fold vibration, has been found useful for documenting various effects of phonatory conditions. The need for such documentation is relevant also to the teaching of singing, particularly in view of vocal demands raised in some contemporary as well as early music compositions. The aim of the present study was to test the usefulness of PTP measurement for evaluating phonatory effects of vibrato-free and ingressive singing in professional singers. METHODS: PTP was measured at a middle, a high and

Laryngeal framework surgery for voice improvement.

Dysphonias resulting from incomplete glottis closure or inadequate vocal fold tension are eligible for phonosurgical correction. Many different phonosurgical techniques have been used for these indications, but the disadvantages associated with augmentation of the vocal folds by means of intracordal injections and the favourable reports concerning laryngeal framework surgery, have lead to a change in treatment policy in many centers. Most phonosurgeons presently advocate laryngeal framework surgery as the first treatment of choice. For correction of incomplete glottis closure usually thyroplas

Perceptual evaluation of dysphonia: reliability and relevance.

A standardized, perceptually based description of hoarseness is of importance for clinical purposes (e.g. therapy evaluation) as well as in research on voice disorders. The reliability and relevance of perceptual parameters are investigated. The GRBAS scale parameters quite well fit the criteria: low intrajudge and interjudge variance but high intervoice variance. The best correlation between judges (0.7) is found for the overall grade of severity. Impressions of the asthenic-strained voice quality are less consistent, but still show a significant interjudge correlation. The overall grade of s…

Artificial intelligence empowered voice generation for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis patients.

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disease that can result in a progressive loss of speech due to bulbar dysfunction, which can have significant negative impact on the patient's mental well-being. Alternative Augmentative Communication (AAC) strategies based on synthetic voices have been shown to assist patients in maintaining communication and improving their Quality of Life (QoL). However, such synthetic voices are often perceived as impersonal and fail to capture the unique voice and identity of the patient. To tackle this issue, combining voice banking (VB) and arti
