Fossil evidence for the origin of aquatic locomotion in archaeocete whales.

Recent members of the order Cetacea (whales, dolphins, and porpoises) move in the water by vertical tail beats and cannot locomote on land. Their hindlimbs are not visible externally and the bones are reduced to one or a few splints that commonly lack joints. However, cetaceans originated from four-legged land mammals that used their limbs for locomotion and were probably apt runners. Because there are no relatively complete limbs for archaic archaeocete cetaceans, it is not known how the transition in locomotory organs from land to water occurred. Recovery of a skeleton of an early fossil cet

The effect of motor solution exploration on the transferability of an acquired motor skill.

Movement variability can either facilitate or impede motor learning, dependent on the context of the learning environment. Most previous studies have evaluated reward- or reinforcement-based learning paradigms with a clear task goal and/or extrinsic feedback. We assessed the effect of movement variability when learning the kettlebell swing in a learner-regulated context, where participants relied solely on intrinsic feedback. We aimed to determine if high variability when first practicing the kettlebell swing enabled exploration of motor solutions that could be utilized to perform the movement

[Oncotic pressure and hemodilution].

The appropriate fluid therapy in neurosurgical patients remains an area of disagreement between neurosurgeons and anaesthesiologists. Fluid restriction has long been practiced in patients with brain pathology, in order to reduce or prevent the formation of cerebral oedema. This grows from a fear that rapid administration of fluids, particularly noncolloidal fluids, can enhance cerebral oedema, although there is a lack of experimental evidence to substantiate this belief. On the other hand, fluid restriction can lead to relative hypovolaemia, causing haemodynamic instability during anaesthesia

Understanding dynamics of agricultural runoff to Oslofjord: A causal loop modelling approach.

Agricultural nutrient runoff remains the primary driver of eutrophication in the Oslofjord, despite decades of mitigation efforts that have failed to reverse ecological decline. Agriculture accounts for approximately 39% of the total nitrogen load entering the fjord, yet regulatory interventions have not translated compliance into measurable ecological improvement. This persistent challenge is partly attributable to interventions that focus on isolated practices rather than the interconnected social, economic, and soil-system processes underlying nutrient losses. To address this gap, this stud

Seasonal reversal of river-groundwater exchange controls dissolved organic matter dynamics across the arid margin of the Tibetan Plateau.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is a key regulator of carbon cycling and water quality within surface water-groundwater interaction (SGI) zones. However, how the seasonal reorganization of SGI governs DOM dynamics in high-altitude arid basins remains poorly understood. Focusing on the Golmud River Basin along the arid Tibetan Plateau margin, this study systematically examines the spatiotemporal evolution of river-groundwater exchange and its influence on DOM sources, composition, and transport along a continuous transect from mountainous headwaters through alluvial fans to salinized plains. Impacts of climate change on storm event-based flow regime and channel stability of urban headwater streams.

Due to the recent improved availability of global and regional climate change (CC) models and associated data, the projected impact of CC on urban stormwater management is well documented. However, most studies are based on simplified design storm analysis and unit-area runoff models; evaluations of the long-term, continuous hydrologic response of extensive stormwater control measures (SCM) implementation under future CC scenarios are limited. Moreover, channel stability in response to CC is seldom evaluated due to the input data required to develop a long-term, continuous sediment transport m

Numerical simulation of the residence time distribution dynamics of a restored agricultural wetland under varying environmental conditions.

This work demonstrates the development, calibration, and use of the three-dimensional Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code (EFDC) hydrodynamic and mass transport model to simulate mixing patterns and study the environmental controls on the residence time distributions of a 1.3 ha agricultural wetland in central Iowa. Incorporating time-varying flow boundary conditions and atmospheric forcing, the model was calibrated against observed state variables, including water temperatures, basin hydraulic characteristics, and dye concentrations monitored at the outlet for six tracer studies conducted under

A model-based analysis for trapping suspended sediment in stormwater inlets of urban drainage network.

Raised awareness of environmental constraints in recent decades has led stormwater management to incorporate quality components and focus on the treatment of urban runoff water at pollutant source areas. This study evaluated the impact of a developed type of sediment trap, installed into stormwater inlets, on the total suspended solids (TSS) load in an urban city center catchment in Finland. The objective was to outline a modelling approach to assess efficiency of the traps to treat TSS originating from different land uses (green areas, pavement, parking, roof, street, and other areas not belo

Analysis and calculation of scour critical velocity of suspended particles in a storm sewer.

The suspended particles in storm sewer can be easily washed away and migrated. However, few studies analyzed the scouring state of suspended particles in pipelines, and also, there was a lack of quantitative calculation. This study simulated the scouring process of suspended particles in a storm sewer with different pipe materials, and mathematical models were built for the scour critical velocity. The results showed that with the increase of particle size, density and the roughness of the pipe wall, the scour resistance of suspended particles increased, and the scouring rate decreased; theref

Urban Flood Modeling and Risk Assessment with Limited Observation Data: The Beijing Future Science City of China.

The frequency of urban storms has increased, influenced by the climate changing and urbanization, and the process of urban rainfall runoff has also changed, leading to severe urban waterlogging problems. Against this background, the risk of urban waterlogging was analyzed and assessed accurately, using an urban stormwater model as necessary. Most studies have used urban hydrological models to assess flood risk; however, due to limited flow pipeline data, the calibration and the validation of the models are difficult. This study applied the MIKE URBAN model to build a drainage system model in t

Predicting Plant Invasions Following China's Water Diversion Project.

China's South to North Water Diversion (SNWD) project connects portions of the Yangtze River in the south to the Yellow River system in the north, overcoming biogeographic barriers to water movement. The diversion will supply potable water to over 110 million people and provide multiple other socioeconomic benefits. However, an inadvertent negative impact of this connection includes creation of conduits for species invasions. Alligator weed (Alternanthera philoxeroides), water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes), and water lettuce (Pistia stratiotes) are the only aquatic plant species on China's s

TOT3-AHA1 module: its role in fine-tuning stomatal responses.

Stomatal pores, controlled by surrounding guard cells, play a crucial role in balancing carbon dioxide (CO2) uptake and water loss in plants. Recent studies in Arabidopsis thaliana have identified the TARGET OF TEMPERATURE 3 (TOT3)-plasma membrane (PM) H+-ATPase (AHA1) module as a key player in stomatal movement, though its exact role in vascular plants is not yet fully understood. TOT3, a transcriptional regulator, influences the activity of AHA1, which regulates ion fluxes essential for stomatal opening. Under high-temperature conditions, TOT3 promotes stomatal opening, while OST1, a key reg

Forelimb Movement Disorder in Rat Experimental Model.

Study of motor activity is an important part of the experimental models of neural disorders of rats. It is used to study effects of the CNS impairment, however studies on the peripheral nervous system lesions are much less frequent. The aim of the study was to extend the spectrum of experimental models of anterior limb movement disorders in rats by blockade of the right anterior limb brachial plexus with the local anesthetic Marcaine (Ma), or with aqua for injection administered into the same location (Aq) (with control intact group C). Two other groups with anterior limb movement disorders un

A Postbiotic Containing Limosilactobacillus fermentum CNCM I-2998 and Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. lactis CNCM I-4831 Reduces Bowel Movement Frequency in Healthy Adults with Self-Reported Unusually Frequent and Soft Stools.

Unusually frequent and soft stools may negatively impact the quality of life. A postbiotic containing heat inactivated Limosilactobacillus fermentum CNCM I-2998 and Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. lactis CNCM I-4831 has previously been shown to alleviate gastrointestinal symptoms and diarrhea in patients with clinically diagnosed gastrointestinal disorders. This study evaluated whether this postbiotic can support bowel movement frequency in Japanese healthy adults with self-reported frequent and soft stools. In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial, participants (n = 1

An Uncommon Cause of Choreoathetosis.

Choreoathetosis is an uncommon presentation in the emergency department setting. The differential diagnosis is broad and includes life-threatening as well as benign causes. Lethal etiologies include metabolic derangements such as hyponatremia as in the case presented here. Hypotonic hyponatremia is the most common electrolyte imbalance and can result from 1 of 2 broad categories of dysregulation: excess free-water intake and solute depletion. Here we describe a case of hypotonic hyponatremia due to a less common route of excess free-water intake. Choreoathetosis as a presenting symptom of hypo

Salt-water acclimation of the estuarine crocodile Crocodylus porosus involves enhanced ion transport properties of the urodaeum and rectum.

Estuarine crocodiles, Crocodylus porosus, inhabit freshwater, estuarine and marine environments. Despite being known to undertake extensive movements throughout and between hypo-osmotic and hyperosmotic environments, little is known about the role of the cloaca in coping with changes in salinity. We report here that, in addition to the well-documented functional plasticity of the lingual salt glands, the middle of the three cloacal segments (i.e. the urodaeum) responds to increased ambient salinity to enhance solute-coupled water absorption. This post-renal modification of urine serves to cons

Effects of agricultural plastic film residues on transportation and distribution of water and nitrate in soil.

Residual plastic film in soil destroys the soil structure and changes the normal transportation and distribution of water and nutrient. In this work, we compared experiments on soil containing residual plastic film with a control experiment to investigate how residual film affects the transportation and distribution of water and nitrate (NO3-) in wetted soil. The experiment used Mariotte bottle, water tube, and soil tank to test six levels of residual-film concentration varying from 0 to 720 kg/hm2 in the soil. The wetting front, soil water content, and nitrate concentrations were all measured

[Lithium and water metabolism].

Interaction between lithium+ and water balance was studied in nine patients suffering manic-depressive trouble. Nephrogenic diabetes insipidus with polyuria and polydipsia was induced by Li+ in one case only. No trouble was apparent in eight cases. However, the applied method of investigation by lacking, and next, excess of water, vasopressin and ADH tests, measurements of urinary osmolarity and clearances, showed up a trouble of concentration in four cases, improved by ADH. The Li+ frequently (50%) induces a trouble of urinary concentration, without polyuria; it is brought to light only by bi

Development of an Imaging-Based Method for Analyzing Voided Urine Flow Using Conventional and High-Speed Video Cameras: A Phantom Study.

AIMS: This study examined whether voided urine form could be an independent parameter to evaluate pathology of the lower urinary tract separately from conventional uroflowmetric measurements. We also evaluated a novel combined methodology of dynamically measuring the velocity and cross-sectional area (CA) of voided urine. METHODS: A male urethral phantom was connected to an electric pump, and voided water was recorded using a high-speed video camera (HSVC). The parameters of voided water form included length to the first twist (LFT), length to the scattered water (LSW), and voided water angle
