Relationship between atypical language lateralization and cognition in pediatric patients with drug-resistant focal epilepsy: role of working memory.

INTRODUCTION: Language lateralization is typically characterized by left-hemisphere dominance; however, atypical language organization occurs more frequently in pediatric patients with drug-resistant focal epilepsy (DRFE), likely reflecting adaptive neuroplastic mechanisms. Because surgical treatment is the standard of care for DRFE, understanding the relationship between language organization and cognitive functioning is essential to minimize postoperative deficits during ongoing neurodevelopment. This study aimed to characterize language lateralization using functional magnetic resonance ima

Baseline working memory was associated with improvement in psychological quality of life in patients with persistent depressive symptoms: a prospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive dysfunction is prevalent in patients with depressive symptoms and contributes to impaired quality of life (QOL) and functional outcomes. However, the prognostic significance of specific cognitive domains for long-term outcomes remains unclear in patients with persistent depressive symptoms. METHODS: In this prospective observational study, 119 patients completed the detailed examination program in routine clinical care. Of these, 84 patients with persistent depressive symptoms provided consent for study participation and met the eligibility criteria for inclusion in the

Pyrethroid insecticide exposure and cognitive developmental disabilities in children: The PELAGIE mother-child cohort.

Pyrethroid insecticides are widely used in agriculture and in homes. Despite the neurotoxicity of these insecticides at high doses, few studies have examined whether lower-level exposures could adversely affect children's neurodevelopment. The PELAGIE cohort included 3421 pregnant women from Brittany, France between 2002 and 2006. When their children reached their sixth birthday, 428 mothers from the cohort were randomly selected, successfully contacted and found eligible. A total of 287 (67%) mothers agreed to participate with their children in the neuropsychological follow-up. Two cognitive

Neurological and neuropsychological functions in adults with a history of developmental arsenic poisoning from contaminated milk powder.

During the summer of 1955, mass arsenic poisoning of bottle-fed infants occurred in the western part of Japan due to contaminated milk powder, and more than 100 died; some childhood victims were later found to suffer from neurological sequelae in adolescence. This unique incident enabled us to explore infancy as a critical period of arsenic exposure in regard to developmental neurotoxicity and its possible persistence through adulthood. The purpose of this work is to evaluate the association between developmental arsenic exposure and the neurological outcomes more than 50 years later. We condu

High homocysteine and low B vitamins predict cognitive decline in aging men: the Veterans Affairs Normative Aging Study.

BACKGROUND: Elevated homocysteine concentrations may contribute to cognitive impairment. Most elevations in homocysteine result from inadequate folate, vitamin B-12, or vitamin B-6 intake. It is not clear whether the observed associations between homocysteine and cognitive measures are causal or whether they are due to homocysteine, to independent actions of the B vitamins, or to both. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to assess the individual and independent effects of baseline plasma homocysteine, folate, vitamin B-12, and vitamin B-6 and of dietary B vitamin intakes on 3-y changes in cognitive measures

Benign childhood epilepsy with occipital paroxysms: neuropsychological findings.

Benign childhood epilepsy with occipital paroxysms is classified among childhood benign partial epilepsies. The absence of neurological and neuropsychological deficits has long been considered as a prerequisite for a diagnosis of benign childhood partial epilepsy. Much evidence has been reported in literature in the latest years suggesting a neuropsychological impairment in this type of epilepsy, particularly in the type with Rolandic paroxysms. The present work examines the neuropsychological profiles of a sample of subjects affected by the early-onset benign childhood occipital seizures (EBO

Visual agnosia in a child with non-lesional occipito-temporal CSWS.

In this paper we describe a case of severe visual agnosia in a child with an electrophysiological pattern of continuous spike-wave discharges in slow sleep (CSWS) in the occipito-temporal regions. The neuropsychological spectrum related to this phenomenon is discussed. Published paediatric reports associate visual agnosia (i.e. an inability to recognize objects without impairment of visual acuity) mainly with symptomatic occipito-temporal aetiology (e.g. cortical dysplasia, vascular insults) and other neurological symptoms (e.g. autism). We describe a detailed 2 year electrophysiological and n

Longitudinal neuropsychological safety assessment of biperiden treatment following traumatic brain injury.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is associated with cognitive impairment and neurobiological alterations potentially influenced by cholinergic signaling. Although biperiden has been investigated as a potential antiepileptogenic therapy after TBI, its neuropsychological safety remains poorly understood. To evaluate the longitudinal neuropsychological safety of biperiden following TBI using standardized cognitive assessments and longitudinal analyses. Patients with moderate-to-severe TBI previously enrolled in a randomized controlled trial received biperiden or placebo treatment in the acute post-in

Evidence for independent peripheral and central age-related hearing impairment.

Deleterious age-related changes in the central auditory nervous system have been referred to as central age-related hearing impairment (ARHI) or central presbycusis. Central ARHI is often assumed to be the consequence of peripheral ARHI. However, it is possible that certain aspects of central ARHI are independent from peripheral ARHI. A confirmation of this possibility could lead to significant improvements in current rehabilitation practices. The major difficulty in addressing this issue arises from confounding factors, such as other age-related changes in both the cochlea and central non-aud

Integrated genomic, proteomic and cognitive assessment in Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy suggest astrocyte centric pathology.

INTRODUCTION: Documented Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) biomarkers are confined to Caucasians and are poor indicators of cognitive difficulties and neuropsychological alterations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study correlates serum protein signatures with cognitive performance in DMD patients of South Asian origin. Study included 25 DMD patients aged 6-16 years. Cognitive profiles were assessed by Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children. Serum proteome profiling of 1317 proteins was performed in eight DMD patients and eight age-matched healthy volunteers. RESULTS: Among the several novel

Neurocognitive impairment in patients with co-occurring bipolar disorder and alcohol dependence upon discharge from inpatient care.

The current study explored the neurocognitive functioning of patients with co-occurring bipolar disorder and alcohol dependence upon discharge from inpatient care. The study compared scores of neuropsychological tests among three groups of bipolar I inpatients without a history of neurological injury or illness: 1) patients meeting DSM-IV diagnostic criteria for alcohol dependence in the past 6 months (n=13), 2) patients diagnosed with alcohol dependence in full remission (n=9), and 3) patients without a history of a substance use disorder (SUD; n=41). Analyses indicated that patients with co-

Cognitive mechanisms, specificity and neural underpinnings of visuospatial peaks in autism.

In order to explain the cognitive and cerebral mechanisms responsible for the visuospatial peak in autism, and to document its specificity to this condition, a group of eight high-functioning individuals with autism and a visuospatial peak (HFA-P) performed a modified block-design task (BDT; subtest from Wechsler scales) at various levels of perceptual cohesiveness, as well as tasks tapping visuomotor speed, global perception, visual memory, visual search and speed of visual encoding. Their performance was compared with that of 8 autistics without a visuospatial peak (HFA-NP), 10 typically dev
