Environmental Stressors and Cardiovascular Health: Acting Locally for Global Impact in a Changing World: A Statement of the European Society of Cardiology, the American College of Cardiology, the American Heart Association, and the World Heart Federation.

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) account for 70% of global mortality and are responsible for over 38 million deaths annually, with cardiovas … llution and the various effects of climate change, such as heat extremes, desert storms, floods and wildfires. Urbanization has intensified the impact of many ERFs and created intense exposure environments, highlighting the urgency and the opportunity to address these for maximum public health benefit. Impactful intervention often requires regulatory and po …

Assessment of spatial air quality on the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia utilizing environmetric techniques.

The presence of harmful substances in the atmosphere poses significant risks to the environment and public health. These pollutants can come from natural sources like dust and wildfires, or from human activities such as industrial, transportation, and agricultural practices. The objective of this study was to assess air quality on the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia by analyzing historical data from the Department of Environment, Malaysia. Daily measurements of PM10, O3, SO2, NO2, and CO were collected from eight monitoring stations over 11 years (2011-2021) and analyzed using environmetric …

Comprehensive characterisation of poly(ADPribosyl)ation in spermatozoa as a novel and early biomarker of sperm health. A preliminary look.

Poly(ADPribose) polymerases (PARPs) are a family of enzymes involved in various biological processes, including DNA repair, maintaining genomic stability, chromatin compaction and cell death induction. PARP activation has been associated with oxidative stress (OS), which causes oxidative DNA damage and negatively affects sperm quality and function. OS plays a fundamental role in the aetiology of male infertility. As nuclear poly(ADPribose) polymerases (PARPs) are markers of DNA damage and their homologues have been found in testicular germ cells, this preliminary study examined the poly(ADPrib

Climate Change and Mental Health in Africa: A Scoping Review.

Background: Climate change-related events such as floods, droughts, and wildfires have been shown to affect global mental health. As climate change worsens, extreme weather events increase, leading to more climate-related mental health disorders globally. Objective: This review article assesses the impact of mental health and climate change in Africa to identify trends, research gaps, and potential interventions. Methods: A scoping review methodology, in accordance with the PRISMA-ScR guidelines, was employed. A search strategy was developed using MeSH and synonym terms to search PubMed, Web o…

Evolution of the photosensitized production of singlet oxygen by aqueous extracts of biomass-burning aerosol.

Biomass-burning aerosol (BBA) is emitted by combustion through wildfires and prescribed burns. As BBA contains chromophoric brown carbon, this aerosol increases radiative forcing and drives particle-phase photochemistry such as generation of singlet oxygen (1O2) via photosensitization. By generating 1O2, BBA could contribute to oxidation of atmospheric aerosol constituents and facilitate photobleaching of its brown carbon. Little is known regarding the quantum yield for 1O2 production in the aqueous dissolved fraction of BBA, or the variability of 1O2 production between biomass fuel types and …

Health impacts of climate change on children and adolescents: A protocol for review of reviews.

INTRODUCTION: Climate change is a contemporary phenomenon of grave concern to global public health. Climate change events such as droughts, wildfires, tornadoes, heatwaves, floods, sea level rise, hurricanes, tropical cyclones, landslides, extreme rainfall, typhoons, dust storms, and desertification significantly affect local, regional, and global living conditions. In Sub-Saharan Africa, the most disturbing of these are desertification, droughts, and floods, which directly threaten water supplies, food security, and the livelihoods of millions of people. The climate crisis affects the health …

Sport for development sector and climate change adaptation in Zambia-theories of strategic choice.

The World Economic Forum Annual Report 2023-2024 warned of the devastating impact that climate change will have on human health by 2025, claiming that 14.5 million deaths by 2050 are likely to occur because of weather-induced catastrophes such as droughts, floods, extreme heat, heatwaves, wildfires, and tropical storms. Regions of the world, whether in the Global North or Global South, are experiencing different, if not multiple, forms of these climate-driven events. In the Global South, home to many sport-for-development non-governmental organisations (SDP NGOs), community actors are respondi…

Climate change and child health: The growing burden of climate-related adverse health outcomes.

Climate change is increasingly recognized not only as an environmental issue but also as a major public health threat, becoming more evident through the rising frequency and intensity of extreme weather events. Immediate exposure to climate-related hazards-such as extreme heat, wildfires, storms, and floods-results in direct health impacts, while indirect effects emerge through ecosystem disruptions and socioeconomic shifts. Climate change can introduce or intensify health risks in regions that were previously unaffected. Effective monitoring of climate-related health developments enables publ…

Quantifying anthropogenic impacts on CO₂ and CH₄ emissions: statistical insights and hotspot detection in East Africa.

East Africa (EA) faces significant challenges related to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, particularly carbon dioxide (CO₂) and methane (CH₄), largely driven by biomass burning (BB) from agricultural fires and wildfires. Despite their importance, the spatiotemporal variability of these emissions remains poorly understood. This study quantifies CO₂ and CH₄ emissions across EA (2001-2022), revealing significant CO₂ emission peaks in 2005 (32.5 million tonnes), 2016 (29.8 million tonnes), and 2020 (31.2 million tonnes), alongside an 18% increase in CH₄ emissions between 2015 and 2020. BB accounted…

Hurricane-induced dramatic decline and natural recovery of a vulnerable sportfish population: Shoal bass (Micropterus cataractae) in the Chipola River, Florida.

Freshwater fishes are among the most biodiverse vertebrate groups and among the most threatened by anthropogenic activities. Many occur in small and geographically restricted populations that are increasingly subject to catastrophic events (hurricanes, wildfires, extreme floods and droughts), but it has rarely been possible to assess the impacts of such events. Here we document the decline and recovery of a regularly monitored, small shoal bass (Micropterus cataractae) population in the Chipola River, Florida following a catastrophic hurricane disturbance. The Chipola River population has the …

Effects of legacy mining on mercury concentrations in conifer needles and mushrooms in northern Palatinate, Germany.

Due to integrated pollution prevention and control measures and the reduced burning of coal, air concentrations of mercury (Hg0) are currently levelling off. In the future, however, evasion from land surfaces will probably reverse this trend. Reasons are the rising temperatures and the loss of forest cover caused by calamities, droughts, storms and wildfires. Plant leaves constitute an important matrix for the accumulation of gaseous mercury and uptake and re-volatilisation by plants depends on the species, the vitality and the age and morphology of leaf organs. It has been shown that older co…
