Structural and role-based workplace mistreatment in clinical training: a cross-sectional study of intern and resident physicians.

BACKGROUND: Workplace mistreatment is common in medical training, but some forms may be embedded in routine clinical roles and workloads rather than occurring only as isolated interpersonal incidents. Intern physicians, who occupy a transitional position between student and physician roles, may be particularly vulnerable. This study examined the prevalence and patterns of workplace mistreatment in a clinical training environment, compared intern physicians with resident physicians (referred to as “research assistants” in the Turkish medical training system), and identified commonly reported be

Assessment of potential violence in the paranoid worker.

Violence in the workplace is sometimes a manifestation of an untreated psychiatric disorder. Paranoid personality disorder, paranoid schizophrenia, and delusional (paranoid) disorder are three psychiatric syndromes in which paranoid ideation is a prominent feature. While the vast majority of people with these conditions are not violent, paranoid workers can exhibit violent behavior as a reaction to beliefs that co-workers or supervisors are threatening or persecuting them. Three cases are described to illustrate the clinical presentation of these disorders and their management in an occupation

Intersectional violence and the health of migrant women in Brazil and Brazilian emigrant women abroad: a scoping review.

Migratory flows have expanded with the increased movement of women from Latin America and other continents to Brazil, in addition to the emigration of Brazilian women to the Global North. Considering the context of the feminization of migration and the importance of understanding women's oppression in the face of displacement, this scoping review analyzes, from an intersectional perspective, scientific evidence on health and expressions of violence against migrant women in Brazil and Brazilian women abroad. The adopted databases are VHL, Cochrane, Embase, PubMed, SciELO, Scopus, and Web of Sci

Sexual violence, condom negotiation, and condom use in the context of sex work: results from two West African countries.

BACKGROUND: Female sex workers (FSWs) are vulnerable to violence within and beyond the workplace. Violence is associated with increased burden of HIV, possibly explained through physiologic or behavioral causal pathways. These analyses sought to determine the relationship between lifetime sexual violence with unprotected, condomless vaginal intercourse (UVI) among FSWs in West Africa. METHODS: FSWs (aged ≥18 years) were recruited into a cross-sectional study through respondent-driven sampling in two West African countries, Togo and Burkina Faso. A total of 1380 participants were enrolled from

Identifying unique and shared risk factors for physical intimate partner violence and clinically-significant physical intimate partner violence.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a significant public health concern. To date, risk factor research has not differentiated physical violence that leads to injury and/or fear (i.e., clinically significant IPV; CS-IPV) from general physical IPV. Isolating risk relations is necessary to best inform prevention and treatment efforts. The current study used an ecological framework and evaluated relations of likely risk factors within individual, family, workplace, and community levels with both CS-IPV and general IPV to determine whether they were related to one type of IPV, both, or neither for b

Prevalence and impact of clinical violence towards nursing students in Hong Kong: a cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVES: Studies of violence towards nursing students (NSs) have been scattered mainly in the West and Middle East, but to date there have been no studies in Eastern countries. Differences in nursing education systems and cultures might have contributed to variations in incidences of clinical violence. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence, associated factors and impact of clinical violence to NSs. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional survey study. Convenience sampling was used to recruit university NSs from March to June 2012 in classroom settings in Hong Kong. A vali

Still making progress to improve the hospital workplace environment? Results from the 2008 National Survey of Registered Nurses.

Despite the majority of RNs perceiving a shortage of nurses, findings from the 2008 National Survey of RNs indicate the hospital workplace improved in several areas compared to a 2006 survey. Improvements included the time RNs spend with patients, quality of nursing care, and a decreasing impact of the shortage on delaying nurses' responses to pages or calls, staff communication, patients' wait time for surgery, and timeliness and efficiency of care. Areas the environment was perceived to have worsened included overtime hours, sexual harassment/hostile, and physical violence. RNs hold mixed vi

Quality improvement in forensic mental health: the East London forensic violence reduction collaborative.

Ward-based violence is the most significant cause of reported safety incidents at East London NHS Foundation Trust (ELFT). It impacts on patient and staff safety, well-being, clinical care and the broader hospital community in various direct and indirect ways. The contributing factors are varied and complex. Several factors differentiate the forensic setting, which has been identified as a particularly stressful work environment. Staff must constantly balance addressing therapeutic needs with robust risk management in a complex patient cohort. ELFT identified reducing inpatient physical violen
