A 57-year-old woman with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) developed an antibiotics-resistant fever after remission induction therapy. Chest X-ray and computed tomography scan revealed multiple consolidations and cavities. Successively, numerous subcutaneous nodules and a thyroid mass emerged. 33 patients with senile, 18 patients with postmenopausal and 9 patients with medicamentous (corticosteroids) osteoporosis were treated with single therapy of Mg lactate (37 patients) and with the combined one of Mg lactate and Na fluoride (23 patients). They were evaluated in three periods of half a year, one year, two years. The better results were achieved with the single therapy than with the combined one and in the senile and postmenopausal osteoporosis than in the medicamentous one. Pain and restricted spine movement were influenced favourably. Kyphosis and x-ray findings were stabilized.

A 56-year-old woman developed Favre-Racouchot syndrome involving her face and scalp primarily at the sites of x-ray irradiation for therapy of an astrocytoma. The patient had not had comedones prior to radiotherapy and did not have a history of excessive sun exposure. The patient showed an excellent response to topical retinoic acid gel. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of Favre-Racouchot syndrome developing after radiation therapy to be reported in the literature; its pathogenesis is discussed in this paper.

A patient with a paraneoplastic effusion presented with respiratory distress one hour after a 2 500 ml pleural aspiration performed at noon. A chest X-ray shows signs of unilateral pulmonary oedema. Re-expansion pulmonary oedema is a rare complication. Oxygen therapy is usually sufficient. It is advisable not to perform this procedure outside normal hours and to withdraw a maximum of 1 500 ml at a time.

Urogenital tuberculosis has unspecific clinical symptomatology. This is often a result of the complications of the disease. Clinical symptoms, X-ray examinations, urinary microscopy, cultures and cytological and histological examinations may reveal the diagnosis. Initial treatment is medical therapy, but surgery will often be a necessary supplement. Follow-up during the treatment period is important to avoid unnecessary complications. With appropriate treatment and follow-up, the prognosis will be good.

A 63-year old patient who had suffered from mild lymphomatoid papulosis with periods of relapse and spontaneous remissions is presented. After 23 years of that chronic dermatosis he developed a malignant lymphoma covering skin, lymph nodes and internal organs, which was confirmed by histopathological examination. Despite intensive chemo and X-ray therapy the patient died. The importance of continuous follow-up of usually benign lymphomatoid papulosis is stressed.

A 52-year-old female complained about non-distinct symptoms such as fatigue, night sweats and bone pain. Because of a febrile bronchitis, chest X-ray was performed, which disclosed enlarged hilar nodes and intestinal and acinar pulmonary infiltrates. Endobronchial biopsy and cultures from bronchial aspirate permitted to diagnose infection by legionella concomitant with sarcoidosis. After antibiotic treatment for legionellosis over four weeks, immunosuppressive therapy for sarcoidosis was initiated with glucocorticoids.

Results of the determination of the chemical composition of human gallstones using X-ray diffraction method are reported. With simple handling it is possible beside identification of some other components to distinguish stones rich or poor in cholesterol already for smallest amounts of sample (greater than or equal to 10 mg, for instance endoscopically obtained material). Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is the most common type of scoliosis in children older than 10 years in the United States. AIS is defined as a lateral spine curvature of 10° or more in the coronal plane, without congenital or neuromuscular comorbidities. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) and American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) do not recommend for or against AIS screening in asymptomatic patients. Physical examination includes the forward bend test with or without scoliometer, wherein scoliometer rotation between 5° and 7° warrants further evaluation with x-rays.

INTRODUCTION: Carpal fractures in children are rare, but can be missed, as their clinical symptoms are unspecific and discrete. Even X-ray diagnosis is difficult. Timely diagnosis and consistent therapy are especially important for scaphoid fractures, as they can help to avoid complications such as non-union or avascular necrosis. A diagnostic approach to paediatric carpal fractures will be discussed on the basis of the following group of patients.

Ghosal hematodiaphyseal dysplasia (GHDD) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder presenting with steroid-responsive anemia and diaphyseal dysplasia of long bones. We report a 3-year-old Iranian girl with refractory anemia, splenomegaly and radiologic signs of metadiaphyseal dysplasia in long bones. The diagnosis was established by clinical presentation and X-ray bone survey. The patient was treated with oral prednisolone therapy with considerable improvement in anemia and splenomegaly.

Response assessment with morphological imaging in metastatic bone disease is difficult. X-Ray is useful only for long bones. CT is the best imaging modality for assessment of osteolysis and osteosclerosis. MRI is the gold standard for bone marrow morphological imaging. Morphological MR imaging using basic sequences, especially T1, provides confident evaluation of the behaviour of lesions under therapy. Radiotherapy and interventional radiology may induce cortical and bone marrow changes.

Acute suppurative thyroiditis with gas formation is very rare. A 70-year-old woman was admitted with dysphagia and fever. The clinical diagnosis of acute thyroiditis was supported by fine needle aspiration biopsy. X-ray examination showed gas collection within the soft tissue of the anterior neck and ultrasonography of the thyroid gland showed a cavity filled with thick liquid. The patient was treated with antibiotic therapy followed by thyroidectomy.
