Using live, intact Ascaris suum and a closed perfusion system, the absorption kinetics and tissue distribution of selected radiolabeled permeants were measured to determine the importance of the transcuticular pathway for drug absorption. The data support the conclusions established by previous in vitro transport studies which utilized excised cuticle-hypocuticle tissue preparations. Seven infants aged 6 days to 9 months were tested for the use by rubbing of a pomade containing 1 mg trinitrine. The study was interrupted because of high blood passage of trinitrine. The authors emphasize the difficulty of any comparison with the use of this drug in adults. They indicate that there was no clinically appreciable side-effect but they advise to delay, until further studies, the use of this technique, with the only objective of improving the technique of intravenous injections or sampling.

In healthy female volunteers the percutaneous absorption of progesterone from an ointment is studied comparing the absorption in the breast skin and that of other regions (thigh, abdomen). The penetration of phenobarbital (PB) into cerebral tissue was determined in cats rendered epileptic by parenteral penicillin and in cats with focal penicillin-induced epilepsy. Twenty-one of 52 patients with regional enteritis had low serum zinc concentrations on initial testing. Fourteen of 31 patients followed longitudinally had low serum zinc concentrations. Two patients are presented as case reports who developed acrodermatitis skin lesions that responded to zinc therapy. Hypogonadism, growth retardation, and abnormalities in taste were frequent complications in Crohn's patients with low serum zinc levels. Certain complications of regional enteritis may be due, in part, to zinc deficiency.

This paper describes techniques used to fabricate enclosures for reducing employee exposure to noise while attaining little or no operational hindrance. The noise enclosures discussed and shown include screw machines, scrap plastic regrinders and their related pneumatic conveying system, as well as high speed presses while having full view of their operation. Engineering design data and noise attenuation results are evaluated.
