Survivors' quality of life after cardiopulmonary resuscitation: an integrative review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of cardiac arrest and cardiopulmonary resuscitation continues to increase worldwide largely due to greater awareness of the symptoms of cardiac events and increased attention to cardiopulmonary resuscitation training in the community. Globally, predicted survival rates after cardiopulmonary resuscitation have remained at 10% for decades and although patient outcome remains unpredictable, there is a positive trend in life expectancy. For a resuscitation attempt to be classed as successful, not only survival but also quality of life has to be evaluated. AIM: The aim of

Delayed cognitive and psychiatric symptoms following methyl iodide and manganese poisoning: Potential for misdiagnosis.

This paper describes two patients who were exposed to toxic substances in the workplace, but for whom diagnosis proved difficult, particularly in case 2. Case 1 was exposed to methyl iodide and case 2 to manganese. Poisoning was characterised by delayed onset of symptoms following exposure and symptom progression after cessation of exposure. The clinical consequences of exposure to these substances include cerebellar and Parkinsonian symptoms followed by the development of cognitive impairment and the late appearance of psychiatric disturbances. Both cases were evaluated by physicians with lit

Does a community-based stress management intervention affect psychological adaptation among underserved black breast cancer survivors?

BACKGROUND: In this randomized trial, Project CARE, we examined whether participation in a cognitive-behavioral stress management and breast cancer wellness and education program improved psychological outcomes among a sample of underserved black breast cancer survivors. METHODS: Both complementary medicine interventions were 10-sessions, manualized, group-based, and were culturally adapted for black women in the community from evidence-based interventions. Participants were 114 black women (mean age = 51.1, 27-77 years) who had completed breast cancer treatment 0-12 months before enrollment

Neurotrauma During Military Training: Results of the INVestigating traIning assoCiated blasT pAthology (INVICTA) Study.

Concern is growing that subconcussive blast exposure during military exercises such as heavy weapons training (HWT) may adversely affect brain function. HWT involves firing shoulder-mounted weapons that can expose the gunner, assistant gunner, and instructors (range safety officers [RSOs]) to blast overpressure >4.0 psi. Every HWT participant sustains repeated blast exposure: gunner and assistant alternate firing within an event, and instructors supervise multiple firings at approximately 12 HWTs over two years. This five-year study was designed to quantify blast exposure and serially assess a

Effects of multi-sensory virtual reality training on gait adaptability and somatomotor network remodeling in patients with stroke: a randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of multisensory-integrated virtual reality (VR) training on gait adaptability and its regulatory mechanisms on the somatomotor network (SMN) in patients with stroke. METHODS: In this randomized controlled trial, 68 patients with stroke were allocated to a VR group (multisensory-integrated VR training) or a control group (conventional rehabilitation). Both groups received 30-minute sessions, 5 days/week for 4 weeks. The primary outcome was gait adaptability assessed by the Dynamic Gait Index (DGI). Secondary outcomes included the Timed Up and Go Test (TUGT

Achieving Gameplay Independence in Virtual Reality Exergames for Individuals With Mild Intellectual Disabilities: Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with mild intellectual disabilities (ID) often face cognitive and functional challenges, which can lead to low physical activity (PA) and a higher risk of obesity. While virtual reality (VR) exergames show promise for promoting PA in typically developing children, a key barrier for individuals with ID is the lack of a structured teaching methodology. This study argues that a tailored approach is essential to help children with mild ID gain independence in gameplay. By learning specific patterns, they can achieve greater autonomy, which not only facilitates increased PA

Behavioural interventions for primary and secondary dysmenorrhoea.

BACKGROUND: Dysmenorrhoea refers to the occurrence of painful menstrual cramps of uterine origin and is a common gynaecological condition with considerable morbidity. The behavioural approach assumes that psychological and environmental factors interact with, and influence, physiological processes. Behavioural interventions for dysmenorrhoea may include both physical and cognitive procedures and focus on both physical and psychological coping strategies for dysmenorrhoeic symptoms rather than modification of any underlying organic pathology. OBJECTIVES: To determine the effectiveness of any b

A boon or a bane? Demystifying employee AI awareness (AIA): A systematic review and future research agenda.

Employee AI awareness (AIA) has emerged as a critical yet conceptually diffuse construct capturing how employees cognitively and affectively interpret the implications of artificial intelligence (AI) for their work. Addressing calls for psychologically grounded research on AI in organizational contexts, this study systematically reviews and synthesizes fragmented evidence to strengthen the conceptual foundations of employee AIA and develop a coherent, process-oriented understanding of the construct. A systematic literature review was conducted using a five-step identification and screening pro

Protocol for a randomized pilot trial of COMPASS, an open source, culturally adapted cognitive behavioral therapy program for forcibly displaced Venezuelan adults in Peru.

Task-sharing approaches have shown promise in low-resource settings, yet few culturally adapted interventions have been systematically evaluated for forcibly displaced populations. Since 2016, over 1.7 million Venezuelans have migrated to Peru, facing significant barriers to healthcare and elevated risks of anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This protocol describes COMPASS (Cognitive-behavioral Open-source Mental-health Program Adapted for migrants, Sustainably delivered by lay providers and Supported by evidence). COMPASS is a transdiagnostic, open-source cognitiv

Developing negative split pacing in endurance athletes: practical guidelines and training models.

Negative split pacing-finishing the second half of a race faster than the first-is a hallmark of elite endurance performance and a key indicator of physiological control, fatigue resistance, and strategic pacing literacy. Rather than being an inherent talent, it represents a trainable skill integrating physiological, cognitive, and behavioral regulation. This mini review synthesizes evidence from performance analyses, physiological studies, and coaching practice to outline how negative split capacity can be systematically developed. We summarize training foundations, mesocycle design, and moni

Accelerated brain ageing in migraine: a multilevel MRI-based brain-age modelling study.

Migraine is increasingly recognized as more than just an episodic headache disorder-it often carries a profound burden marked by emotional and cognitive disturbances. Recent insights point towards a possible link between migraine and accelerated brain ageing, yet the specific brain regions affected and the clinical implications remain poorly understood. We investigated grey matter-based brain age using voxel-based morphometry in 110 preventive treatment-naïve patients with migraine and 70 healthy controls, based on T1-weighted MRI and a validated brain-age prediction framework trained on data

Atherosclerosis as a Neuroimmune and Neurovascular Disorder: Pharmacological Opportunities Beyond Lipid Lowering.

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVE: Atherosclerosis is traditionally defined as a lipid-driven inflammatory disease of medium and large arteries, but vascular inflammation also interacts with immune, autonomic, metabolic, and brain vascular pathways. This narrative review synthesizes evidence supporting an artery-immune-brain framework and identifies pharmacological opportunities beyond lipid-lowering and antithrombotic therapy. METHODS: A targeted narrative review was performed using PubMed/MEDLINE, Google Scholar, and publisher databases, with priority given to randomized trials, guidelines, meta-analy

Vision loss, disability and multimorbidity among older people in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana in South India: the longitudinal eye health, ageing and disability study (LEADS) - study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Vision impairment (VI), multimorbidity and disabilities are common among older populations. Although the prevalence of VI and its associations are frequently reported, the incidence and risk factors are not well documented in India. The Longitudinal Eye Health, Ageing and Disability Study (LEADS) aims to: (a) determine the prevalence, causes, risk factors and impact of VI; (b) explore the associations between VI and sociodemographic risk factors, systemic health conditions (multimorbidity), physical performance, hearing, depression, social connectedness and cognitive function; an
