The Republic of Moldova undertook reforms in tuberculosis (TB) control and health care consistent with international recommendations and advanced towards the global target for case detection. The number of TB cases notified increased overall by 50% during 2001-2005. Expansion of the DOTS strategy and full coverage coincided with a greater role for primary health care (PHC) in TB control and the advent of national insurance for TB diagnosis and treatment. These developments and improvements in laboratories, surveillance, medical personnel skills, and public awareness contributed to increased ca

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco is one of the major risk factors for non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in the Indian population. The decreasing trend of tobacco use reflects significant progress in tobacco control, which can be attributed to key policies like price rise, smoke-free areas, ban on advertising and promotion and pictorial warnings on tobacco products. This narrative review was undertaken to assess effectiveness of these four policies in reducing tobacco burden in India.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Articles were obtained by searching through all major databases. Peer-reviewed articles published i

OBJECTIVE: Cancer is a leading cause of both morbidity and mortality in India. In response, the government launched a national screening programme under the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Non-communicable Diseases (NPCDCS/NP-NCD). Despite comprehensive guidelines, screening rates remain very low. We conducted a field study in Meghalaya and Mizoram between 2021 and 2023 to identify barriers and facilitators to cancer screening uptake, involving a diverse group of stakeholders.
METHODS: The mixed-methods study included 420 frontline health workers (FLHWs), 38 government offici

BACKGROUND: Tooth decay in secondary school children is one of the most prevalent non-communicable diseases in the UK and globally. Whilst almost entirely preventable, oral health inequalities remain a significant public health problem to reach and manage those most vulnerable. School-based prevention strategies targeted to localities with oral health inequality, and incorporating peer-to-peer interventions warrant further evaluation. These peer-to-peer interventions have a bidirectional benefit and are proposed to positively influence both the 'peer leader' and 'peer recipient'; they rely on

Background and aim Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder associated with significant physical and psychological complications, including diabetes distress, which is the emotional burden of living with and managing diabetes, adversely affecting glycemic control. It includes emotional, regimen-related, interpersonal, and physician-related distress. The global prevalence varies widely, while Indian data remain limited and inconsistent. Factors such as fear of complications, treatment fatigue, inadequate support, and poor doctor-patient communication contribute to this co

BACKGROUND: Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability worldwide. In India, it is the fourth leading cause of death and fifth leading cause of disability, posing a major public health concern. National surveys reveal an increasing trend in stroke risk factors such as tobacco use, physical activity, alcohol use, hypertension, and dyslipidemia. However, knowledge regarding the combined effect of these risk factors and their various combinations is limited. Understanding the individual, combined, and synergistic effects of known risk factors, along with new risk factors, is essential to ad

BACKGROUND: Bangladesh, home to 165 million people, reported its first COVID-19 case in March 2020. This prompted a range of public health measures to control the epidemic. However, limited access to COVID-19 testing and incomplete or inaccurate death registration likely obscured the pandemic's true impact. We use longitudinal data from the Matlab Health and Demographic Surveillance System (HDSS) in Bangladesh to assess excess mortality and underlying causes of death during the COVID-19 pandemic.
METHODS: We analysed mortality among 299,775 individuals residing within the Matlab HDSS catchmen
