BACKGROUND: Randomised placebo-controlled trials have shown that daily oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) with tenofovir-emtricitabine reduces the risk of HIV infection. However, this benefit could be counteracted by risk compensation in users of PrEP. We did the PROUD study to assess this effect.
METHODS: PROUD is an open-label randomised trial done at 13 sexual health clinics in England. We enrolled HIV-negative gay and other men who have sex with men who had had anal intercourse without a condom in the previous 90 days. Participants were randomly assigned (1:1) to receive daily combined

BACKGROUND: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection is a significant problem among female sex workers (FSWs) in Nagaland, India. Place of solicitation and sex vary considerably in this context. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between categories of sex work and HIV risks.
METHODS: In 2009 a survey was undertaken among 417 FSWs in Dimapur, Nagaland using an interviewer-administered questionnaire and blood and urine samples. Using this data, we constructed a typology of sex work by combining usual place of solicitation and place of sex, and examined variations in d

BACKGROUND: Unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are the major negative consequences of unsafe sex. Both are common and have long-term social and health consequences. Barrier methods of contraception can prevent both, but unfortunately they are much less effective than the more modern methods at pregnancy prevention. Modern effective contraceptives, however, do not protect against STIs and some may increase the risk of acquisition of infection. This comprehensive review discusses the magnitude of burden of reproductive ill-health, focussing on data from the European

Female entertainment workers in China are at risk of sexually acquiring HIV, but risk factors of their unsafe sex remain understudied. Using information from a venue-based sample of 724 female entertainment workers in Shanghai, this paper examines the prevalence and risk factors of unsafe sex and STIs. While both measures of unsafe sex and history of common STIs suggest that participants in this study appear to have lower rates of unsafe sex and STIs than reported in the literature, venue-based female entertainment workers are at risk of sexually acquiring HIV. Risk factors of unsafe sex inclu

BACKGROUND: In the context of AVAHAN, the India AIDS Initiative of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, general population surveys (GPS) were carried out between 2006 and 2008 in Belgaum (northern), Bellary (mid-state) and Mysore (southern) districts of Karnataka state, south India. Data from these three surveys were analysed to understand heterogeneity in HIV risk.
METHODS: Outcome variables were the prevalence of HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Independent variables included age, district, place of residence, along with socio-demographic, medical and behavioural characterist

The association of trauma exposure and coping style to sexual risk behavior has yet to be fully examined in the context of primary and casual sexual partnerships. The current study assessed a high risk sexual behavior-unprotected anal intercourse (UAI)-in a high risk population of HIV-positive men who have sex with men (MSM) with a history of trauma. Using audio computer-assisted self-interview technology, 132 HIV-positive MSM completed measures of trauma exposure, trauma symptoms, coping strategies, and sexual risk behavior. Hierarchical logistic regression analyses indicated that completing

PURPOSE: To examine the effect of a community-based sexually transmitted infection (STI) screening program on sexual risk behavior among African American adolescents. We hypothesized that adolescents testing positive for an STI and receiving post-test counseling would reduce risky sexual practices, whereas STI-negative adolescents would show little or no change in protective sexual behavior after screening.
METHODS: From August 2006 to January 2008, we recruited 636 sexually active African American adolescents (age, 14-17) from community-based organizations in two mid-sized U.S. cities with h

Alternatives to oral contraceptives are an integral part of contraception used worldwide. In order to empower women to correctly use contraception for as long as they choose not to become pregnant, healthcare practitioners and their patients must be educated about these methods as well as the full spectrum of available birth control options. Effective counseling is a key factor in helping a woman effectively chose a method that is appropriate for her. In order for contraceptive counseling to be effective, information should be accurate and provided in an unbiased manner. This review will help

OBJECTIVE: To compare the level of contraceptive use among in and out-of school rural Ugandan adolescents.
DESIGN: Cross sectional survey.
SETTING: Mbarara district.
SUBJECTS: Five hundred in-school and 220 out-of school adolescents aged 15-19 years.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: Contraceptive use.
RESULTS: Contraceptive prevalence was 171 (23.8%), with 99 (19.8%) among in-school and 72 (32.7%) in out-of school (OR=0.8, 95% CI=0.5-1.3). Of the 286 who had had sexual intercourse, 171 (59.8%) were current users with 99 (57.9%) in-school and 72 (42.1%) out-of school. The predominant method was the m

BACKGROUND: Few cognitive-behavioral interventions have focused on preventing sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and unintended pregnancies (UPs) in young, sexually active women in a single study. Military recruit training provides a well-defined, national, nonclinic sample in which to evaluate such an intervention.
METHODS: All female Marine recruits (N=2,288) in training were approached. Of these, 2,157 (94.3%) voluntarily agreed and were randomly assigned, by platoons, to participate in cognitive-behavioral interventions to prevent STIs or UPs or to prevent physical training injuries a

While genital co-infection with Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Chlamydia trachomatis in the same individual is relatively common, little is known about the characteristics of individuals co-infected with both pathogens. We describe the sociodemographic and geographic characteristics of those with genital co-infection with N. gonorrhoeae and C. trachomatis. We reviewed the case-notes of all patients presenting with co-infection between March 1989 and February 2000. Incidence rates were calculated for those aged 15-64 living in the 18 different electoral wards of the city and subjects were assigned a

African-American women have the highest AIDS rate of any racial/ethnic group of women in both Los Angeles County (LAC), California and in the United States. Limited population-based epidemiologic studies of African-American women with HIV and AIDS describe this group and examine the factors associated with the excessive rates. Interview data collected from 1990 to 1997 on a population-based sample of AIDS cases and a group of HIV-infected women in LAC were analyzed to highlight the sociodemographic and behavioral characteristics of African-American women. This group of African-American women w

BACKGROUND: Use of contraceptive among international university students remains under-explored. This study examined contraceptive use at last sex among international students in Australia, comparing Chinese (the largest source-country group) with non-Chinese students.
METHODS: Prevalences of types of contraceptive method used at last sex were examined for unmarried sexually active international students aged 18-34 years in an Australian university-based cross-sectional survey. Univariable and multivariable logistic regression models were used to identify international students' socio-demogra

Digital health is now a delivery strategy for HIV prevention and sexual health promotion, not simply a channel for health education. Mobile messaging, web-based testing, HIV self-testing (HIVST) support, mobile applications, social media recruitment, telehealth, tele-pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), and chatbot-assisted workflows can reduce barriers related to stigma, distance, clinic capacity, and confidentiality. These tools also create an opportunity for primary HIV and sexually transmitted infection (STI) prevention before high-risk patterns are established, using positive, age-appropriate

Sexual activities are perceived as risky behaviors among people living with HIV (PLWH), which leads to stigmatization. Today, effective treatment and the strengthened Undetectable=Untransmittable (U = U) message are supposed to be key in freeing PLWH from the fear of HIV transmission. We conducted a cross-sectional study in 2024 at four HIV clinics in Chiang Mai, Thailand. We enrolled PLWH aged ≥ 18 years who were receiving ART. We collected data through face-to-face interviews using structured questionnaires to assess sexual behaviors and U = U awareness. Logistic regression analyses were per
