AIM: To study the ecological variation of intake of cassava foods and dietary cyanide load.
DESIGN: Ecological study design.
SETTING: Five communities in south-western Nigeria where tropical ataxic neuropathy (TAN) was described as endemic (area A), 11 communities in south-western Nigeria where TAN was described as absent (area B), and five communities in northern Nigeria (area C).

In a retrospective review of 73 children with post-neonatal tetanus seen over an 11-year period at University College Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria, atypical portals of entry of the causative agent were recorded in nine and five developed unusual complications during the course of treatment for tetanus. Localized tetanus was encountered in seven children; this involved the cephalic region in one and one lower limb in each of the remaining six. Among these six children, the portal of entry of the organism included intramuscular injections into the buttock in five and an infected insect bite on the

This study describes major electrocardiogram (ECG) measurements and diagnoses in a population of African individuals; most reference data have been collected in Caucasian populations and evidence exists for interethnic differences in ECG findings. This study was conducted in the Seychelles islands (Indian Ocean) and included 709 black individuals (343 men and 366 women) aged 25 to 64 years randomly selected from the general population. Resting ECG were recorded by using a validated ECG unit equipped with a measurement and interpretation software (Cardiovit AT-6, Schiller, Switzerland). The epi

We report an illustrative case of advanced "hut lung," or domestically acquired particulate lung disease (DAPLD), in a recently emigrated nonsmoking Bangladeshi woman with a history of 171 hour-years of exposure to biomass smoke. She presented with symptoms of chronic cough, dyspnea, and early parenchymal lung disease. High-resolution computed tomography (CT) of the chest demonstrated numerous 2- to 3-mm nodules, sparing the pleural surface. To our knowledge, this is the first such report of CT findings in the literature. Bronchoscopy yielded typical anthracotic plaques and diffuse anthracosis

Injuries result in major financial and productivity losses to nations while inflicting tremendous personal burden on the injured and their families. Two-thirds of the global deaths from injuries occur in the developing world, consuming substantial health sector resources. Pakistan is a developing country with a population of 136 million and no reported estimate of the national impact of injuries. This study presents a profile of injuries in Pakistan, estimates the impact on the country and recommends strategies to further delineate this important public health problem. A Reverse Passive Haemagglutination Test (RPHA) was designed for the detection of Salmonella typhi antigen and rapid diagnosis of typhoid fever. Two per cent fresh sheep RBC's were coated with 32 micrograms/ml of immunoglobulin. The minimal detectable level of the antigen was 1250 micrograms/ml. Cross reactions were observed with the samples of patients suffering from Salmonella paratyphi A and pseudomonas infections. The RPHA established was used for the detection of S. typhi antigen in culture broths from 100 patients with clinically suspected typhoid fever with culture and/or widal positive

The microbiology, epidemiology and pathophysiology of ophthalmia neonatorum are reviewed with special emphasis on its prevention and management in the developing world. Although prophylaxis should be mandatory, no single topical agent is effective to prevent the ocular complications of both Neisseria gonorrhoea and Chlamydia trachomatis. Where levels of resistance to tetracyclines are low, however, tetracycline eye ointment is permissible for ocular prophylaxis. Eye prophylaxis has a relatively low failure rate. Management of ophthalmia neonatorum should be syndromic and systemic. Contact trac
