BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Vitamin D exerts a regulatory role over mucosal immunity via the vitamin D receptor (VDR). Although Paneth cells and their products are known to regulate the commensal and pathogenic microbiota, the role that VDRs in Paneth cells play in these responses is unknown.
METHODS: We identified the decreased intestinal VDR significantly correlated with reduction of an inflammatory bowel disease risk gene ATG16L1 and Paneth cell lysozymes in patients with Crohn's disease. We generated Paneth cell-specific VDR knockout (VDRΔPC) mice to investigate the molecular mechanisms.

OBJECTIVE: An injury of the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) triggers axonal regeneration but results in a poor functional recovery. Netrin-1 and glial cell-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) expression are up-regulated in laryngeal muscles during RLN regeneration, but the role of their receptors produced in the nucleus ambiguus is unknown. The aim of this work was to determine the timing of the production of Netrin-1 and GDNF receptors during RLN regeneration and correlate this with the previously identified timing of up-regulation of their trophic factors in the laryngeal muscles.

The UVA/riboflavin collagen crosslinking (CXL) is one of the treatment procedure for stopping the progression of keratoconus. The inclusion criterion for this procedure is a minimum corneal thickness of 400 μm, which is not often met in patients with advanced keratoconus.
