The diagnostic performance of salivary gland ultrasound elastography in Sjögren's syndrome and sicca symptoms: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To systematically evaluate the diagnostic performance of ultrasound elastography (USE) in distinguishing primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) from healthy/disease controls. METHODS: We searched the PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases for published literature on USE for diagnosing pSS. Bivariate random effects models were used to calculate the pooled sensitivity and specificity of USE. To determine the factors influencing heterogeneity, meta-regression and subgroup analyses were performed to assess country, diagnostic criteria, imaging mechanisms, shear wave e

High intensity focused ultrasound atomization and erosion in healthy and tendinopathic tendons.

Objective.High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) can induce thermal and mechanical mechanisms in a well-defined focal volume of tissues. H … pre-heated (to 58 °C) and collagenase-soaking (3+ hours) tendinopathic models caused a decrease in elasticity and/or increase in viscosity, increasing susceptibility to erosion by HIFU atomization.Significance.Therefore, tendons with chronic tendinopathies may be more susceptible than healthy tendons to histotripsy fractionation.

Tibialis posterior muscle stiffness assessment in flat foot subjects by ultrasound based Shear-Wave Elastography.

BACKGROUND: Few methodologies are used to assess Tibialis Posterior muscle stiffness. Those present limitations leading to a lack of evidence. Muscle stiffness assessment can help in the injuries risk factors identification while coupling with Ultrasound based Shear-Wave Elastography for its management. However, a precise and reliable methodology needs to be utilized to increase stiffness accuracy among the entire Tibialis Posterior muscle. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the stiffness association between Tibialis posterior deep and superficial layer and between flat and neutral foot

Evaluation of remodeling and geometry on the biomechanical properties of nacreous bivalve shells.

Mollusks have developed a broad diversity of shelled structures to protect against challenges imposed by biological interactions(e.g., predation) and constraints (e.g., [Formula: see text]-induced ocean acidification and wave-forces). Although the study of shell biomechanical properties with nacreous microstructure has provided understanding about the role of shell integrity and functionality on mollusk performance and survival, there are no studies, to our knowledge, that delve into the variability of these properties during the mollusk ontogeny, between both shells of bivalves or across the

Elastography in the evaluation of liver allograft.

Elastography is an established technique in the evaluation of chronic liver diseases. While there is a large clinical experience and data available regarding the performance of elastography in native liver, elastography experience with liver grafts is limited and still growing. Both ultrasound-based elastography techniques and MR Elastography (MRE) are useful in the assessment of liver fibrosis in liver transplants. Technical modifications for performing elastography will be required for optimum evaluation of the graft. In general, caution needs to be exercised regarding the use of elastograph

Investigations on the buckling and dynamics of diving-inspired systems when entering water.

This work provides comparative modeling approaches to determine the velocities and natural frequencies of plunge-diving bird and bioinspired drone systems when entering water. These systems are chosen to further explain the survival of diving birds as they impact water and to provide insight into the design geometry and material choice of bioinspired diving drones. A nonlinear reduced-order model is developed and utilized to analyze the dive at impact considering both Timoshenko and Euler-Bernoulli beam theories. Using Hamilton's principle, the equations of motion are first derived. Then, stat

Elevated liver stiffness without histological evidence of liver fibrosis in rural Ugandans.

Liver fibrosis may be assessed noninvasively with transient electrography (TE). Data on the performance of TE for detecting liver fibrosis in sub-Saharan Africa are limited. We evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of TE by performing liver biopsies on persons with liver fibrosis indicated by TE. We enrolled HIV-infected and HIV-uninfected participants with TE scores consistent with at least minimal disease (liver stiffness measurement [LSM]≥7.1 kPa). Biopsies were performed and staged using the Ishak scoring system. A concordant result was defined using accepted thresholds for significant fibrosi

A Non-linear Viscoelastic Model of the Incudostapedial Joint.

The ossicular joints of the middle ear can significantly affect middle-ear function, particularly under conditions such as high-intensity sound pressures or high quasi-static pressures. Experimental investigations of the mechanical behaviour of the human incudostapedial joint have shown strong non-linearity and asymmetry in tension and compression tests, but some previous finite-element models of the joint have had difficulty replicating such behaviour. In this paper, we present a finite-element model of the joint that can match the asymmetry and non-linearity well without using different mode

Vibration-controlled transient elastography for the detection of cirrhosis in chronic hepatitis D infection.

Noninvasive detection of cirrhosis via vibration-controlled transient elastography (VCTE) has revolutionized the management of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. However, VCTE has not been studied in chronic hepatitis D virus (HDV) infection and accuracy remains in question due to the significant hepatic inflammation associated with this infection. Consecutive HBV, HCV and HDV patients who underwent VCTE (2006-2019) were evaluated. Diagnosis of cirrhosis was made via liver biopsy or clinical findings. VCTE was compared with other noninvasive serum fibrosis t

[A comparative study of viscoelasticity between normal cornea and keratoconus].

Study of the mechanical properties of in vivo corneal materials is an important basis for further study of corneal physiological and pathological phenomena by means of finite element method. In this paper, the elastic coefficient ( E) and viscous coefficient ( η) of normal cornea and keratoconus under pulse pressure are calculated by using standard linear solid model with the data provided by corneal visualization scheimpflug technology. The results showed that there was a significant difference of E and η between normal cornea and keratoconus cornea ( P < 0.05). Receiver operating characteris

Shear wave liver elastography.

Chronic liver disease is a substantial world-wide problem. Its major consequence is increasing deposition of fibrous tissue within the liver leading to the development of cirrhosis with its consequences of portal hypertension, hepatic insufficiency, and hepatocellular carcinoma. The stage of liver fibrosis is important to determine prognosis, surveillance, prioritize for treatment, and potential for reversibility. The process of fibrosis is dynamic and regression of fibrosis is possible with treatment of the underlying conditions. Previously, the only method of staging the degree of fibrosis w
