BACKGROUND: Aedes aegypti Linnaeus is a peridomestic mosquito that lays desiccation-resistant eggs in water-filled human-made containers. Previous investigations connected egg hatching with declining dissolved oxygen (DO) that is associated with bacterial growth. However, past studies failed to uncouple DO from other potential stimulatory factors and they contained little quantitative information about the microbial community; consequently, a direct role for bacteria or compounds associated with bacteria in stimulating egg hatching cannot be dismissed.

OBJECTIVE: The authors describe clinical and epidemiologic characteristics of severe presentations of Rift valley fever (RVF) during the 2008 epidemic in Madagascar.
METHODOLOGY: The diagnosis was confirmed by RVF virus polymerase chain reaction (PCR), or detection of specifics antibodies by Elisa.
RESULTS: Sixteen cases of severe RVF were recorded. The sex-ratio was 7/1 and median age was 32 years (20/59 years). The risk factors of infection were: contact with infected animals or their meat (n=8), and travelling to a risk area (n=2). Hemorrhagic, neurological, and ocular manifestations were…

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a neglected, emerging, mosquito-borne disease with severe negative impact on human and animal health and economy. RVF is caused by RVF virus (RVFV) affecting humans and a wide range of animals. The virus is transmitted through bites from mosquitoes and exposure to viremic blood, body fluids, or tissues of infected animals. During 2007 a large RVF outbreak occurred in Sudan with a total of 747 confirmed human cases including 230 deaths (case fatality 30.8%); although it has been estimated 75,000 were infected. It was most severe in White Nile, El Gezira, and Sennar st…

Q fever is a worldwide zoonosis caused by Coxiella burnetii. The disease most frequently manifests clinically as a self-limited febrile illness, as pneumonia (acute Q fever) or as a chronic illness that presents mainly as infective endocarditis. The extreme infectivity of the bacterium results in large outbreaks, and the recent outbreak in the Netherlands underlines its impact on public health. Recent studies on the bacterium have included genome sequencing, the investigation of host-bacterium interactions, the development of cellular and animal models of infection, and the comprehensive analy…

Mediterranean spotted fever (MSF) is an infectious disease, caused by Rickettsia conorii. It can have a serious course, even deadly, with many types of complications. Described is a case of a 70-year-old man, hospitalized for fever, abdominal pain, amylase and lipase elevation, and ultrasound hypoechoic pancreas. The working diagnosis at admission was acute pancreatitis. 2 days after admission, the patient developed signs of MSF: fever, maculopapular rash, and "tache noire". Treatment with oral doxycycline was started. After 5 days of therapy, there was complete remission of epigastric pain an…

In two surveys conducted from March 1999 to March 2001 and from January 2004 to December 2006, a total of 3,950 ticks (belonging to ten different species) were collected from seven domestic and wild animals (goat, sheep, cattle, dog, fox, hare, and mouflon) from different localities throughout Cyprus. In order to establish their infection rate with Spotted Fever Rickettsiae (SFG), ticks were pooled and tested by polymerase chain reaction targeting gltA and ompA genes, followed by sequencing analysis. When tick pools tested positive, individual ticks were then tested one by one, and of the 3,95…

The introduction of chloramphenicol in 1948 revolutionised the outcome of typhoid fever but chloramphenicol-resistant strains of Salmonella enterica serotype Typhi were reported just two years later. Resistance followed also the introduction of ampicillin and co-trimoxazole. During the second half of the 1980s, strains resistant to the three first-line antimicrobial agents, chloramphenicol, ampicillin and co-trimoxazole emerged and spread rapidly throughout the Indian subcontinent and South East Asia. During the 1990s when fluoroquinolones had become a first-line treatment for typhoid fever, t…

OBJECTIVE: To explore what triggers an elevated body temperature of > or =40.0 degrees C in some women given misoprostol, a prostaglandin E1 analogue, for postpartum haemorrhage (PPH).
DESIGN: Post hoc analysis.
SETTING: One tertiary-level hospital in Quito, Ecuador.
POPULATION: A cohort of 58 women with a fever of above 40 degrees C following treatment with sublingual misoprostol (800 micrograms) for PPH.
METHODS: Side effects were documented for 163 Ecuadorian women given sublingual misoprostol to treat their PPH. Women's body temperatures were measured, and if they had a fever of > or =…

A granulocytosis in dengue hemorrhagic fever has not been mentioned, it mayprobably be included under the term of leucopenia. Here is the case of a 14-year Thai boy presenting with fever and diarrhea for 3 days. He was diagnosed as dengue hemorrhagic fever, grade I because he had hemoconcentration, thrombocytopenia without bleeding and positive IgM dengue antibody On the 5th day, he developed agranulocytosis and was treated with G-CSF and empirical antibiotics. His leucocyte count was successfully normalized within 1 day and persistently sustained until discharge.

BACKGROUND: Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is a potentially fatal disease caused by a tick-borne virus.
OBJECTIVES: A 53-year-old man presented with fever and acute painful scrotal swelling simulating acute epididymo-orchitis.
STUDY DESIGN: Based on the clinical and epidemiological findings, CCHF virus infection and epididymo-orchitis were suspected. This symptom, rarely reported in viral haemorrhagic fevers, was observed in this case.
RESULTS: The diagnosis was confirmed by detection of the IgM antibody to CCHF virus and positive RT-PCR.
CONCLUSION: We report the first case of im…

Lassa fever (LF) is a viral hemorrhagic disease which affects one-fourth to two million people annually with the fatality rate of about 10,000. It is associated with sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) usually at the convalescent stage. Recently, cases of SNHL at the acute phase have been reported. This study was done to further investigate the incidence and features of SNHL in acute phase of LF. It is a prospective case-control study of LF patients seen with acute SNHL conducted between July 2007 and April 2009 at Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital Nigeria. The diagnosis of acute LF was based o…

Alkhurma virus is a flavivirus, discovered in 1994 in a person who died of hemorrhagic fever after slaughtering a sheep from the city of Alkhurma, Saudi Arabia. Since then, several cases of Alkhurma hemorrhagic fever (ALKHF), with fatality rates up to 25%, have been documented. From January 1, 2006, through April 1, 2009, active disease surveillance and serologic testing of household contacts identified ALKHF in 28 persons in Najran, Saudi Arabia. For epidemiologic comparison, serologic testing of household and neighborhood controls identified 65 serologically negative persons. Among ALKHF pat…

INTRODUCTION: Chronic meningococcemia is an unusual clinical presentation within the spectrum of infections due to Neisseria meningitidis.
CASE REPORT: We report a 32-year-old man who presented with a 15-day history of fever and maculopapular skin rash, in the absence of meningeal irritation or severe sepsis manifestation. Blood culture identified N. meningitidis. Clinical course was uneventful after antibiotic treatment was initiated.
CONCLUSION: Early diagnosis of chronic meningococcemia is crucial for optimal management of the patient and his/her contacts. Such a diagnosis should be suspe…
