Secondary Prevention of Osteoporosis Through Assessment of Individual and Multiple Risk Factors.

INTRODUCTION: Osteoporosis is a chronic progressive bone disease where the bone tissue resorption exceeds its regenerative capacities. Such a process leads to the reduction of bone mineral density (BMD), and distortion of trabecular microarchitectonics, which creates the basis for an increased fracture risk on a "low trauma" for osteoporosis patients. The notion of low trauma implies a stressor that will not cause a fracture in a healthy person under normal circumstances. BMD is a strong predictor of future fractures. However, many fractures occur in persons with BMD values beyond the defined

Individualized prediction of late-onset dysphagia in head and neck cancer survivors.

BACKGROUND: Limited data exist regarding which head and head and neck cancer (HNC) survivors will suffer from long-term dysphagia. METHODS: From a population-based cohort of 1901 Utah residents with HNC and ≥3 years follow-up, we determined hazard ratio for dysphagia, aspiration pneumonia, or gastrostomy associated with various risk factors. We tested prediction models with combinations of factors and then assessed discrimination of our final model. RESULTS: Cancer site in the hypopharynx, advanced tumor classification, chemoradiation, preexisting dysphagia, stroke, dementia, esophagitis, es

Individual and Site-Specific Variation in a Biogeographical Profile of the Coyote Gastrointestinal Microbiota.

Most knowledge of the vertebrate gut microbiota comes from fecal samples; due to difficulties involved in sample collection, the upper intestinal microbiota is poorly understood in wild animals despite its potential to inform broad interpretations about host-gut microbe relationships under natural conditions. Here, we used 16S rRNA gene sequencing to characterize the microbiota of wild coyotes (Canis latrans) along the gastrointestinal tract, including samples from the duodenum, jejunum, ileum, caecum, ascending and descending colon, and feces. We used this intestinal profile to (1) quantify h

Association between swallowing function and muscle strength in elderly individuals with dysphagia.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the association among swallowing function, hand grip strength, and peak expiratory flow in elderly patients with dysphagia. METHODS: A total of 35 patients (26 men and 9 women, 80.7 ± 8.1 years) were included in the final analysis. They underwent videoendoscopy (VE) for the assessment of swallowing function, hand grip strength test, and peak expiratory flow test. We used the Hyodo score, the objective scale of VE developed by Hyodo et al. (2010), which consists of the following 4 parameters: salivary pooling degree at the vallecula and pyriform sinus

Increased prevalence of depression, anxiety, and adjustment and somatoform disorders in transsexual individuals.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to explore rates of depression, anxiety, and adjustment and somatoform disorders in a large sample of transsexual individuals (TSI), compared with matched non-TSI cohorts from general practices in Germany. METHODS: Individuals initially documented as transsexual (index date) between January 2010 and December 2018 were identified in 468 general practices (GP) from the IMS Disease Analyzer database (IQVIA). Non-transsexual women (NTSW) and men (NTSM) were matched (1:1) with transsexual individuals by age, index year, and physician. The main outcome measure

Early Detection of High-frequency Presbycusis Among Normal Hearing Individuals.

BACKGROUND: Presbycusis is an age-related sensorineural hearing loss and it may reduce quality of life. We conducted a study to establish the prevalence of high-frequency presbycusis in normal hearing individuals and to validate the role of extended high-frequency distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) in the screening. METHOD: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 205 normal hearing adult participants with an age range between 25 and 54 years old. Hearing analysis with extended high-frequency pure-tone audiometry (PTA) and high-frequency DPOAE was carried out for all eligible

Immunohistochemistry of the Human Adrenal CYP11B2 in Normal Individuals and in Patients with Primary Aldosteronism.

The CYP11B2 enzyme is the terminal enzyme in the biosynthesis of aldosterone. Immunohistochemistry using antibodies against CYP11B2 defines cells of the adrenal ZG that synthesize aldosterone. CYP11B2 expression is normally stimulated by angiotensin II, but becomes autonomous in primary hyperaldosteronism, in most cases driven by recently discovered somatic mutations of ion channels or pumps. Cells expressing CYP11B2 in young normal humans form a continuous band beneath the adrenal capsule; in older individuals they form discrete clusters, aldosterone-producing cell clusters (APCC), surrounded

Frontal-subcortical behaviors during Alzheimer's disease in individuals with Down syndrome.

There is evidence that frontal-subcortical circuits play an important role in the initial presentation of dementia in Down syndrome (DS), including changes in behavior, a decline in working memory and executive dysfunction. We evaluated 92 individuals with DS (≥30 years of age), divided into 3 groups by diagnosis-stable cognition, prodromal dementia, and Alzheimer's disease. Each individual was evaluated with an executive protocol developed for people with intellectual disabilities and was rated for behaviors related to frontal lobe dysfunction (disinhibition, executive dysfunction, and apathy

Funny or Angry? Neural Correlates of Individual Differences in Aggressive Humor Processing.

Humor has been a hot topic for social cognition in recent years. The present study focused on the social attribute of humor and showed different stories to participants, which were divided into four types according to the model of humor style, to explore the underlying neural mechanism of point-to-self aggressive humor and how individual differences modulated it. Measuring the degree of anger and funniness, results suggested that aggressive humor helped us in social communication by reducing the degree of anger. The neural activities showed that bilateral temporal lobes and frontal lobes playe

Accounting for individual differences in the response to tDCS with baseline levels of neurochemical excitability.

There is now considerable evidence that applying a small electrical current to the cerebral cortex can have wide ranging effects on cognition and performance, and may provide substantial benefit as a treatment for conditions such as depression. However, there is variability across subjects in the extent to which stimulation modulates behaviour, providing a challenge for the development of applications. Here, we employed an individual differences approach to test if baseline concentrations of the neurochemicals GABA and glutamate are associated with an individual's response to transcranial dire

Metabolic Signature of Hepatic Fibrosis: From Individual Pathways to Systems Biology.

Hepatic fibrosis is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, as it ultimately leads to cirrhosis, which is estimated to affect up to 2% of the global population. Hepatic fibrosis is confirmed by liver biopsy, and the erroneous nature of this technique necessitates the search for noninvasive alternatives. However, current biomarker algorithms for hepatic fibrosis have many limitations. Given that the liver is the largest organ and a major metabolic hub in the body, probing the metabolic signature of hepatic fibrosis holds promise for the discovery of new markers and therapeutic targe

Association between Hemoglobin Glycation Index and NAFLD in Chinese Nondiabetic Individuals.

PURPOSE: Limited studies have preliminarily identified a positive association between nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and hemoglobin glycation index (HGI). However, this association has not been fully established. We aim to investigate the association between NAFLD and HGI in Chinese nondiabetic individuals and to construct a risk score based on HGI to predict a person's risk of NAFLD. METHODS: After strict exclusion criteria, 5,903 individuals were included in this retrospective cross-sectional study. We randomly selected 1,967 subjects in the enrollment to obtain an equation of lin

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in non-obese individuals.

Individuals with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) who lack classical risk factors also have the ability to develop nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and progression to more advanced liver disease. The pathophysiology and risk factors for the development of NAFLD in non-obese persons are not fully understood but seem to be closely related to insulin resistance, atherogenic dyslipidaemia and alterations in body composition, with some patients harbouring predisposing genetic polymorphisms. In normal-weight individuals, also called 'lean', there is limited potential for effective lifest

Screening of antibiotic-resistant staphylococci in the nasal cavity of patients and healthy individuals.

The normal microbiota play critical roles in the general health of an individual and the functions of the microbiota colonized the nasal cavity in maintaining the health of the respiratory tract are well known. The nasal cavity is one of the potential bio-sources of the pathogenic opportunistic bacteria that have the ability to resist standard antibiotics. My aim was an evaluation of the prevalence of antibiotic-resistant staphylococci in the nasal cavity of healthy individuals and compared them with the strains isolated from patients. The work was designed as prospective, descriptive study in
