The emergence of bacterial resistance has severely compromised the efficacy of antibiotics, creating an urgent public health crisis. Regrettably, conventional natural products (NPs), nature's primary reservoir for antibiotic discovery, are being exhausted due to overexploitation, leading to a concerning scarcity of developable NPs. There is an urgent need for new strategies to combat infections caused by drug-resistant bacteria. Of particular significance is the emerging recognition that the uncultured microbial majority in natural environments may synthesize antimicrobial compounds with unpre

The rise in antifungal resistance and changing epidemiology underscores the need to improve antifungal susceptibility testing. This study tested the standard medium RPMI1640 and healthy lung and sinus media against Aspergillus, Mucor, and Candida species. Candida showed greater variability in minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) compared with molds, with higher MICs in respiratory tract-mimicking media than in RPMI1640. Aspergillus terreus was the most affected mold, showing higher MICs for certain antifungals in these media.

BACKGROUND: Extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs), particularly in Enterobacterales, are major contributors to the growing problem of antibiotic resistance in Gram-negative bacilli. This guidance document provides an overview of the epidemiology, identification, and clinical management of infections caused by Extended-Spectrum Beta-Lactamase-producing Enterobacterales (ESBL-E). This guideline adds on the previously issued Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) guidelines on carbapenem-resistant organisms (CROs) and intended to support clinicians in making evidence-based decisions regard

The global rise of antimicrobial resistance represents a critical challenge to public health, with Escherichia coli emerging as one of the most significant contributors due to its high adaptability and prevalence of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) production. Outer membrane vesicles (OMVs), nanoscale structures released by Gram-negative bacteria, have recently been implicated in the dissemination of resistance determinants and direct antibiotic inactivation. This study investigated the role of OMVs derived from ESBL-producing E. coli in mediating resistance to ampicillin. Clinical strains

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a high-priority microorganism that necessitates the development of new treatments, as it causes a substantial disease burden and economic impact globally. MRSA colonizes the skin and anterior nares and can potentially become invasive, leading to pneumonia and soft tissue infection. Additionally, MRSA can establish chronic infections in wounds and medical implants, partly due to its ability to form biofilms. Likewise, the skin commensal Staphylococcus epidermidis also causes similar infections, particularly through its ability to form a plas

This work studies the decontamination efficacy of different plasma treated liquids (PTLs) on bacteria from the genera Staphylococcus and Pseudomonas, both commonly associated with various infections. Clinical isolates and reference strains were used, to ensure the relevance to real-life applications. Bacterial suspensions were exposed to studied PTLs and to different comparative solutions that help dissect the mechanisms behind the observed antimicrobial effects. These comparative solutions comprised standard solutions of major reactive species (hydrogen peroxide, nitrites, nitrates) typically

Retained hardware/prosthetic infections frequently require antimicrobial suppression therapy. Treatment options are often limited by resistance, allergies, and dosing frequencies. Dalbavancin (DAL) is a potentially attractive option for suppression of gram-positive infections given its potential for infrequent dosing. However, optimal DAL suppression dosing is unknown. An in silico pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic simulation was performed to assess the predicted dalbavancin concentration resulting from suppressive regimens. Serum levels were deemed adequate if the fAUC24/MIC was above the PK ta

Antimicrobial peptides are natural immune effector molecules that protect the host from pathogenic microorganisms and play crucial roles in the innate immune system. Herein, the functions of theromacin from the razor clam Sinonovacula constricta (ScTM) were identified. Multiple sequence alignment revealed that the structure of ScTM was similar to that of a theromacin homolog with a signal peptide and conserved Macin domain. Tissue distribution analysis indicated that ScTM mRNA was expressed in all tested tissues. Moreover, ScTM transcripts were upregulated in hemocytes and hepatopancreas after

The fluoroquinolone antimicrobial agents, enrofloxacin and marbofloxacin, were approved in the United States for cats in 1990 and 2001, respectively. In 2023, revised breakpoints for testing isolates from dogs were published. These canine breakpoints are discordant with the current feline breakpoints. This study was aimed at suggesting new feline breakpoints using a pharmacokinetic-pharmacodynamic (PK-PD) approach and new pharmacokinetic data. The PK-PD derived cutoff values (COPD) were compared to microbiologic data available for testing the susceptibility of targeted pathogens since the orig

The development of environmentally friendly and highly efficient materials is critical for next-generation antibacterial and optoelectronic applications. In this study, we present the successful synthesis of a novel lead-free perovskite, KCsSnI1.7Cl1.3, via a rapid and scalable chemical bath deposition method at 150 °C for just 5 min. The resulting film features well-defined orthorhombic, pyramid-like crystals with uniform grain sizes (800-1000 nm) and a compact, pinhole-free morphology. Remarkably, the material exhibits strong optical absorption up to 800 nm, positioning it as a promising can

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are a class of naturally occurring molecules found in animals, plants, and microorganisms. Ω76 is an AMP specifically designed for treating Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE). Escherichia coli, engineered to produce Ω76, may serve as a potential whole-cell drug delivery system for treating CRE, yet Ω76 exhibited potent antimicrobial activity against the production host. In this study, PAtxA, a tightly controlled, high-level, modulable, and stationary-phase-specific promoter, was employed for the functional expression of Ω76 in E. coli. PAtxA facilitates
