Emergence of responsible sanctions without second order free riders, antisocial punishment or spite.

While empirical evidence highlights the importance of punishment for cooperation in collective action, it remains disputed how responsible sanctions targeted predominantly at uncooperative subjects can evolve. Punishment is costly; in order to spread it typically requires local interactions, voluntary participation, or rewards. Moreover, theory and experiments indicate that some subjects abuse sanctioning opportunities by engaging in antisocial punishment (which harms cooperators), spiteful acts (harming everyone) or revenge (as a response to being punished). These arguments have led to the co

Peritraumatic and trait dissociation differentiate police officers with resilient versus symptomatic trajectories of posttraumatic stress symptoms.

Research has consistently demonstrated that stress reactions to potentially traumatic events do not represent a unified phenomenon. Instead, individuals tend to cluster into prototypical response patterns over time including chronic symptoms, recovery, and resilience. We examined heterogeneity in a posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptom course in a sample of 178 active-duty police officers following exposure to a life-threatening event using latent growth mixture modeling (LGMM). This analysis revealed 3 discrete PTSD symptom trajectories: resilient (88%), distressed-improving (10%), and

Factors of PTSD: differential specificity and external correlates.

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) has been found to be a multidimensional disorder most likely consisting of four distinct symptom dimensions. Many studies have investigated the fit of two competing structural models of PTSD (King et al., 1998; Simms et al., 2002). However, little research has been done on the utility and differential external correlates of these dimensions. Meta-analysis was used to find the correlations between dimensions of PTSD and five external variables (depression, anxiety, panic, substance use, and trauma history), and multivariate analysis was used to find the uniq

Neuroimmune interactions in a model of multiple sclerosis.

Psychological stress has been implicated in both the onset and exacerbation of multiple sclerosis (MS). Our research has focused on the role of stress at the onset of MS, using the mouse model Theiler's murine encephalomyelitis virus-induced demyelination. Theiler's virus is a natural pathogen of mice that causes a persistent infection of the central nervous system (CNS) and inflammatory immune-mediated demyelination that is very similar to MS. Our research has shown that restraint stress sufficiently increases corticosterone secretion to cause immunosuppression. Stressed mice develop decrease

Love styles and desire for closeness in romantic relationships.

This study investigated differences in love styles (i.e., eros, ludus, storge, pragma, agape, mania) associated with the romantic desire for closeness. Participants were 197 undergraduate students (M age = 19.8 yr., SD = 1.9; 92 men, 104 women) currently in a romantic relationship who completed a survey assessing their love styles and current desire for closeness with their partner (i.e., desired less closeness, the same level of closeness, or more closeness). Results indicated small significant differences in individuals' preferences for closeness with the eros and ludus love styles. Specific

[A new explanatory model for obsessive-compulsive disorder].

BACKGROUND: Ever since the first descriptions of obsessive-compulsive disorder (ocd) there have been discussions about how the phenomenology of the disorder should be understood. Over the past 50 years the main emphasis has been on the phobic elements of ocd. A new psychological model, called the Inference Based Approach (iba), focuses on an underexposed aspect of the disorder, namely the strange convictions of the patient. AIM: To compare the new model with the existing cognitive behavioral theories of ocd. METHOD: Literature research was conducted using Medline. RESULTS: According to the

Mental imagery as an emotional amplifier: application to bipolar disorder.

Cognitions in the form of mental images have a more powerful impact on emotion than their verbal counterparts. This review synthesizes the cognitive science of imagery and emotion with transdiagnostic clinical research, yielding novel predictions for the basis of emotional volatility in bipolar disorder. Anxiety is extremely common in patients with bipolar disorder and is associated with increased dysfunction and suicidality, yet it is poorly understood and rarely treated. Mental imagery is a neglected aspect of bipolar anxiety although in anxiety disorders such as posttraumatic stress disorde

Modelling relationships between cognitive variables during and following public speaking in participants with social phobia.

Cognitive models of social phobia predict that several cognitive processes will mediate the relationship between trait levels of social anxiety and the extent of anxiety experienced in a specific social-evaluative situation. The current study aimed to provide a test of these relationships. Over 200 clinical participants with social phobia completed measures of their general social anxiety and a week later performed a brief impromptu speech. They completed a measure of state anxiety in response to the speech as well as questionnaires assessing several cognitive constructs including focus of per

The relationship between the five-factor model and latent Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition personality disorder dimensions.

This study compared the latent structure of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition personality disorders (PDs) with the 5-factor model (FFM) of general personality dimensions. The subjects in the study were 742 community-residing individuals who participated in the Hopkins Epidemiology of Personality Disorders Study. Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition PD traits were assessed by psychologists using the International Personality Disorder Examination, and PD dimensions were derived previously using dichotomous factor analysis.

Comparison of basic assumptions embedded in learning models for experience-based decision making.

The present study examined basic assumptions embedded in learning models for predicting behavior in decisions based on experience. In such decisions, the probabilities and payoffs are initially unknown and are learned from repeated choice with payoff feedback. We examined combinations of two rules for updating past experience with new payoff feedback and of two choice rule assumptions for mapping experience onto choices. The combination of these assumptions produced four classes of models that were systematically compared. Two methods were employed to evaluate the success of learning models fo

Gambling, exchange systems, and moralities.

History and ethnography show us that, across societies of the past and present, gambling varies considerably with respect to its organization, social meanings, and how it is regarded in moral terms. This paper presents a basic scheme for analyzing the relationship between gambling and society. A theoretical starting point is that reciprocity is fundamental to social and economic systems. An anthropological theory of exchange systems makes a broad distinction between a structural dimension (generalized versus balanced reciprocity) and a normative dimension (from voluntary to involuntary). A mod

Risky business: emotion, decision-making, and addiction.

Although metabolic abnormalities in the orbitofrontal cortex have been observed in substance dependent individuals (SDI) for several years, very little attention was paid to the role of this brain region in addiction. However, patients with damage to the ventromedial (VM) sector of the prefrontal cortex and SDI show similar behaviors. (1) They often deny, or they are not aware, that they have a problem. (2) When faced with a choice to pursue a course of action that brings an immediate reward at the risk of incurring future negative consequences, they choose the immediate reward and ignore the

Autobiographical memory: exploring its functions in everyday life.

This special issue of Memory spotlights research that uses a functional approach to investigate autobiographical memory (AM) in everyday life. This approach relies on studying cognition, in this case AM, taking into account the psychological, social, or cultural-historic context in which it occurs. Areas of interest include understanding to what ends AM is used by individuals and in social relationships, how it is related to other cognitive abilities and emotional states, and how memory represents our inner and outer world. One insight gained by taking this approach is that levels and types of

A longitudinal study of mathematical competencies in children with specific mathematics difficulties versus children with comorbid mathematics and reading difficulties.

Mathematical competencies of 180 children were examined at 4 points between 2nd and 3rd grades (age range between 7 and 9 years). Children were initially classified into one of 4 groups: math difficulties but normal reading (MD only), math and reading difficulties (MD-RD), reading difficulties but normal math (RD only), and normal achievement in math and reading (NA). The groups did not differ significantly in rate of development. However, at the end of 3rd grade the MD only group performed better than the MD-RD group in problem solving but not in calculation. The NA and RD only groups perform

Surface dyslexia in a Japanese patient with semantic dementia: evidence for similarity-based orthography-to-phonology translation.

We studied the reading performance of a Japanese-speaking patient, TI, with bilateral but asymmetrical (left more than right) temporal-lobe atrophy, severe anomia, and poor word comprehension. Most Japanese kanji characters correspond to several different legitimate pronunciations in different contexts, with varying degrees of correspondence consistency. TI made many errors in reading aloud words that violate statistically typical character-sound correspondences, especially for less common words, but had relatively preserved ability to read aloud strings in which the assignment of the typical

[Sexual activity in old age-problem-oriented counselling from the psychiatric point of view].

Empirical investigations often report sexual activity in old age. Society's negative stereotype of the aging person, however, results in the topic being socially taboo and prejudiced. Active sexual intercourse gets less frequent in advancing age, but masturbation and sexual fantasies still prevail. In higher age groups men are seemingly more active than women. Persons living inconstant partnerships are more active than persons living on their own. There is a significant shift from sexual intercourse to tenderness, confidence, and satisfying relations. There are numerous physical, psychological

The overlap of depressive personality disorder and dysthymia: a categorical problem with a dimensional solution.

In this paper we review the research literature on depressive personality. We begin with a brief discussion of the historical antecedents of the current debate, noting the long-standing uncertainty about the relation of this construct to both major mood disorders and normal temperament. Then we examine the DSM-IV Appendix B construct of depressive personality disorder, in particular its controversial overlap with dysthymic disorder. This overlap is discussed within the construct validation criteria proposed by Robins and Guze (1970), highlighting recent developments and responding to criticism
