Septic arthritis in the end-stage renal disease population.

Septic arthritis is important to consider in any patient who presents with joint pain because it is a medical emergency with an 11% fatality rate. Diagnosis and treatment may improve prognosis; however, many patients do not regain full joint function. In patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD), immune dysfunction due to uremia and chronic vascular access leads to increased risk of infection. We examined the incidence, risk factors and sequelae of septic arthritis in a cohort of hemodialysis patients. The US Renal Data System was queried for diagnoses of septic arthritis and selected seque

Saline-Air Hysterosalpingo-Contrast Sonography Is Equivalent to the Modified Hysterosalpingogram Following Hysteroscopic Sterilization.

PURPOSE: To estimate the diagnostic efficacy of saline-air hysterosalpingo-contrast sonography (SA-HyCoSy) compared with the modified hysterosalpingogram (mHSG) for confirmation of both coil location and tubal occlusion following hysteroscopic sterilization. METHODS: This study included 19 women who underwent both SA-HyCoSy and mHSG where 1 test was followed by the other. Sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values for tubal occlusion against the mHSG were calculated for each fallopian tube by 2 independent interpreters. Interrater reliability was assessed using Cohe

Is There a Correlation Between Preoperative or Postoperative Vitamin D Levels with Pseudarthrosis, Hardware Failure, and Revisions After Lumbar Spine Fusion?

BACKGROUND: Vitamin D deficiency is a well-known cause of postoperative complications in patients undergoing orthopedic surgery. Orthopedic complications seen in vitamin D deficiency include nonunion, pseudarthrosis, and hardware failure. We seek to investigate the relationship between vitamin D deficiency and outcomes after lumbar spinal fusions. METHODS: A retrospective patient chart review was conducted at a single center for all patients who underwent lumbar spinal fusions from January 2015 to September 2017 with preoperative or postoperative vitamin D laboratory values. We recorded demog

Effect of transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation on recovery following gynecological laparoscopic surgery: a meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation (TEAS) is a non-invasive therapy that combines low-frequency neurostimulation with the application of acupoints. Several studies have demonstrated the efficacy of TEAS for post-operative complications following gynecological laparoscopy. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of TEAS for recovery following gynecological laparoscopic surgery. METHODS: Seven electronic databases (CNKI, Wanfang, VIP, Embase, Web of Science, PubMed, Cochrane) were searched up to 24 September 2025. Continuous outcomes were pooled as mean differences (MDs)

Optimizing transversus abdominis plane blocks in colorectal surgery: methodological queries and the fundamental question of indication.

This letter to the editor critically appraises the recent trial by Li et al. evaluating liposomal bupivacaine transversus abdominis plane (TAP) blocks in laparoscopic colorectal surgery. First, we raise three methodological concerns: the complete absence of a justified sample size calculation, an implausibly large 36-point difference in Quality of Recovery-40 (QoR-40) scores that far exceeds the accepted minimal clinically important difference, and the concerning inclusion of irrelevant references to support liposomal bupivacaine. Beyond these specific queries, we address a conceptually import

Profiles of Anxiety in Children Undergoing Elective Surgery: Predictors and Perioperative Outcomes.

Surgery is an anxiety-provoking event, but there are individual differences in the magnitude of experienced anxiety. The objective of this study was to identify patterns of children's preoperative anxiety, its predictors, and perioperative outcomes. The sample included 171 children (Mage = 9.95 years) undergoing elective surgery. We derived groups of children's anxiety based on multiple indicators (i.e., self-report, heart rate, and frontal brain EEG activity) during a preoperative visit and on the day of surgery. Parents and children reported on children's temperament, children's behavior was

Regional Anesthesia With Fascial Plane Blocks for Pediatric Cardiac Surgery With Sternotomy: A Narrative Review.

Undertreated pain in children who undergo sternotomy for cardiac surgery can lead to cardiopulmonary complications, the development of chronic pain, and long-term maladaptive stress response. Opioids have dose-dependent side effects that may interfere with postoperative recovery. With the increasing availability of ultrasound, regional anesthesia is often included in multimodal analgesic approaches. Fascial plane blocks targeting the intercostal nerves or ventral rami are of particular interest for patients requiring full heparinization for cardiopulmonary bypass as they avoid manipulation of

Effectiveness of gabapentinoids in orthopedic surgeries: a systematic review and meta-analysis of postoperative pain, and opioid-sparing effects.

BACKGROUND: Gabapentinoids, including gabapentin and pregabalin, are increasingly used in perioperative settings to manage postoperative pain. Despite their widespread use, the clinical evidence regarding the treatment of gabapentinoids in terms of improvement of pain, reduction of opioid consumption and the enhancement of functional recovery is inconclusive. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed at evaluating the efficacy of gabapentinoids in orthopedic surgeries, with a focus on their role as standalone interventions without the influence of other analgesic modalities like spinal an

Role of Functional neurosurgery in Improving Patient Outcomes in Epilepsy, Movement Disorders, and Chronic Pain.

Functional neurosurgery encompasses surgical procedures geared towards treating movement disorders (such as Parkinson's disease and essential tremor), drug-resistant epilepsy, and various types of pain disorders. It is one of the most rapidly expanding fields within neurosurgery and utilizes both traditional open surgical methods such as open temporal lobectomy for epilepsy as well as neuromodulation-based treatments such as implanting brain or nerve stimulation devices. This review outlines the role functional neurosurgery plays in treatment of epilepsy, movement disorders, and pain, and how
